Fossil hunt and fossil prep: super rare crab, ear bones and we some cool amber

More videos on my Patreon which starts at $4 a month. / mamlambo
I head off to a an area that I don't often spend time at to give it a thorough look at. The hunt started off slowly but in the end I found quite a few really good fossils! One of the round fossils looked like it could be a rare Actinotocarcinus crab so I prep that to find out what is hiding inside.
The prep took around 6 hours and was quite challenging given the shape of the fossil.
I also get a package in the mail, all the way from Lithuania. Jarek sent me some amazing pieces of Baltic amber!
This is footage from 2 days of hunting.

From those two shells (the shell within the shell) it really brought home to me how the deposits I love to hunt the most here in the UK are very similar in age despite being totally different types of preservation and on opposite sides of the globe. Very strange how something so small just struck a chord of absolute familiarity while marvelling at the amazing crabs and bones youare finding over there. I love to hunt the red crag which is late pliocene to early pleistocene (lots of redeposited material weathered from the clays beneath, and absolutely jammed with those shells) and the underlying London clay which is early eocine. Im mainly finding sharks teeth (fresh from the clay, and rolled polished and redeposited in the crag), small fish and sharks vertebrae, fragmented whale bone and small incredibly hard and usually only partially complete crustacean nodules (virtually like ironstone and not really preppable in any way, at least for a complete ameture like myself). I have found a small mostly complete whale earbone which is probably my favourite from those deposits but I'm still waiting on that Meg tooth to show itself, I've knownpeoplewho havefound them, just a case of looking in the right place at the right time. I have found a couple of nice things from the jurassic coast, including a partial iguanadon vertebrae, but nothing really beats chasing sharks teeth for me.

Cool video! You’re ready now to start your own NZ dinosaur park! I find lots of fossils, whale, shark teeth, and other stuff I don’t know what it is, here in the Santa Barbara area, can you show us a step by step prep and the tools and bits you use and finishes you apply? That would be so cool ! 😎

Hi mate, love the spiky crab, you will have to get really energised and prep the legs out, you know you can do it, we trust you and your pen. One question, do you know how many different crab species there are, it gets exciting to watch you find new types every now and then, same goes for bones. One last thing have you started to prep the head you found, not the big one, but the smaller one. I’ll stop annoying you now, Cheers from across the pond

Hi Iain! There are about 8 fossil crab species in my area, I've found 5 or 6 of them so far. One is only known from a single specimen though :) I have a few other fossils I have to get to before I try and find these legs hehehe. I haven't started on the fossil skull yet (the marlin), there is still some research being done on it :)

Thanks for the response, look I have all the confidence in you find all eight crab types, with maybe a lobster thrown in for good measure. I reckon that marlin head is going to be a real eye opener when you get it done, tell the people at the museum to hurry up lol. Well better go we are being threatened by a cyclone over here with rain, rain, rain and more rain making life very humidified. Be good my friend see you soon. Cheers
