Fort Monroe | Jefferson Davis' final years
Fort Monroe was the center of many important historical events during the U.S. Civil War. Being that it was so far south, yet controlled by the Union in the north, made it even more pivotal with things like enslaved "contraband", the first battle of the ironclads, and later the imprisonment of Jefferson Davis for over 2 years.
The Casemate Museum takes you through that history like nowhere else can.

Very cool. Now I see why guys wanted to get assigned there. The other was the Presidio and it was the one place I really wanted to be assigned. These old forts are amazing .

I was stationed there 58-59. I was General Bruce C Clarkes photographer as a SP4. Wonderful duty. I did not explore the famous places; I was more interested in exploring the women of Virginia. I was 19-20 years old.

That was interesting, thanks for your work! I noticed on one of the information displays the mention of Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, NY. This is the location of my high school, Fort Hamilton. I went there in the 1960's. There was a cannon on campus, with some cannonballs displayed. It is the only active base in the NYC area. During the Civil War it protected the harbor against raids.

That is so cool!!!
I can only imagine what it was like to be a defender at these old forts, I guess everyone on a cannon was left deaf.

@@WalkwithHistory Yes ...no wonder the old Horn type listening devise was popular in the 1880s forward..... The merged into the First Phonographs.... With the cylinders for recording matching the long fat Cannon barrels.. 😂 lol
I didn't know that Jeff Davis was ever charged for anything. It's amazing that he was held responsible when, except for Wirz at Andersonville, I'm not aware of any Confederate officers or civilian leaders that were prosecuted for wartime crimes.

I am not aware of any Confederate Officers charges either. They all ran away for a while before coming back and nothing was ever officially done.

@@WalkwithHistory Reportedly, only Wirz and some bushwhacker in Tennessee were the only CSA military leaders prosecuted and executed after the War. Not even the Fort Pillow massacre was prosecuted.
Good Job. Enjoyed it. Jimmy Carter gave away the Panama Canal! And now I find out he restored Jefferson Davis citizenship! Will there be end to his villainy!! By the way great job!
