Nicey done. My facebook page has a pic with the cabin and a cub bear in it. We were headed home from work and got the chance to stop and get some pics. My old research of the area and the Spanish mines also led me to this same spot looking for the fort. Mind you that was 40 years ago. LOL. Your research was spot on Thanks my friend, Cat

Thanks Rick. I wish history would remember him more for his contributions to the west (Antione). He is slowly falling to obscurity, which is sad.

Enjoyed your video on the old basin forts. You did some good research. Good of you to try and put the history of that time period for the general public. Was wondering about the land ownership on the kit carson cabin area. Ive never see any tribal signs there. Is this bureau of reclamation land? Think where the upper fort was located has gone back to sage brush and might be on a energy land lease of some kind looking from the highway.

Hi Doug. Thank you for the comment about the research, as you can imagine a lot of time goes into that. I'm glad you brought up the land ownership issues. I almost didn't include the location of the fort because I didn't want people to get in trouble, but I was conflicted because I want them to know the "general" location for historical purposes. You are absolutely correct. The cabin is on private land and the Fort is on Indian Land. There are no remains left of the old fort, I searched for a couple of hours. Almost a hundred years ago (Reagans Picture from 1934), the adobe mounds had been weathered away to only a few feet above ground. They are entirely gone now. Just a heads up, if you go into the old cabin beware of Ticks. I had ticks crawling up my left arm while filming inside the cabin. Over the next 2 days I found a total of 15 ticks on me. They must have nested in there over the winter. For your knowledge: When Professor Reagan was doing his site visit on the old fort, one of the older Indians in Ouray showed him other ruins left over from the mountain men (Hudson Bay Company) somewhere south of the old Boat Landing (I think on the other side of the river, but not sure). Reagan never could figure out what they were. We fish the river a lot on boats, next time I am in that area I am going to try and find them.

Thanks Mark. I'm hoping this video will strike up interest in future historians and they can dig deeper into the history of this amazing fort. I want to see it "resurrected" from the dead.

It’s tragic this fort and cabin have been left to rot into oblivion.

@@LowBudgetExploration not as much as I appreciate the content. It’s wild that states don’t place markers marking significant locations in history. Florida does and they’re all through the state. When the time comes ask for help funding the kiosk’s and you’ll be helped. Thanks again

Vieux, I leaned that way also for a bit, you may be correct. I wish my Grandpa was still alive, he had an uncanny knack for identifying old cars and parts. Thanks for sharing.

Canada today is named from the old Britrin, as new Britain... Don't except royalty today.. native of two lands is not known of a British native war before the purchase of the center of the now us. I'm only saying the real treasures of history are the city's that paved over to forget what's under or behind, current resources say where the untold old deaths are now the filter of yesterday..
