Don, you got to this a little faster than I’ve been able to! I have a top 10 tips for forstner bits that I’ve written and dabbled with for 6 months or so but have been too busy to get out. When I finally release it I’ll have to send people your way for more on forstner bits. Great video you’ve got here...very well done. 👍

Hey Don, thank you for your honest appraisal of this bit set, having recently retired from a lifetime in the Motor industry I have sold a lot of my Mechanic tools and bought some woodworking tools to play with at my leisure. Liked and subscribed and waiting for the next video. Tony.(UK)

tony5006 thank you for watching and subscribing. I appreciate your comments. Since I have such a small channel and no sponsors I’m able to say what I want about the tools I have. There are some others tool reviews on the channel and hopefully some more to come soon. I’ve found woodworking to be a great hobby for my leisure time. Enjoy.

@@wb_finewoodworking Absolutely, I can do what I like when I like, mainly. My son, who is a self employed Carpenter, borrowed my dust extraction kit today as he's fitting a new kitchen just round the corner from me, so I have been limited to what I could do. Tony.

Great video Don. I have a porter cable set and it has been pretty decent to me. One thing you should do if you ever replace your set is to keep the old ones and cut off the point. This way if you need to make a smooth bottom hole you can start it with the one with the point, then change to the one without the point and the hole will have a smooth bottom.

hi, great video. Where you have made those medalions?

Toni Dandreamatteo I bought the medallions back in 2006. There was an ad for them in a woodworking magazine. It was just after Sears came out with the first home laser for woodworking and I think someone was using one of those to make them. The only place I’ve found recently that carries something similar is Highland Woodworking. They sell several different ones. As I mentioned in the video I’d like some with my logo but haven’t found a source yet. I guess these days anyone with a laser could make them.

Hey, great video. I’m noticing that my bit is getting stuck upon contact with wood any ideas? I’ve tried different brands and speeds and I still can only drill about 1/4 inch deep.

Grover - I’m glad you liked the video. I hope it helped. I haven’t had the problem you’re experiencing. On Facebook this week I did see a post about a similar problem. Most of the commenters suggested that perhaps the Morse taper in his drill press was slipping. The chuck on a drill press is held onto the spindle with a friction fit using a Morse taper similar to what you see on lathes. Very seldom do most people have to take the chuck out so they don’t realize this. I’d suggest removing the chuck and checking for debris in the area of the Morse taper and cleaning. Then reseat the chuck back into the spindle making sure it’s well seated. I’m sure that there are some good videos on KZread on this process if you’ve never done it before. I’ve only done it once that I can remember but do remember my dad doing it numerous times on his old Craftsman drill press.

I have an older model drill press...it had worked great with drill bits but when I put in a Forstner bit it doesn't have enough power to turn the bit... it keeps stopping when I bring it down on the wood... any ideas?

Hello Rich, You may have answered your own question but there are other possibilities other than an under powered motor on your drill press. First of all you need to see if the belt on your drill press is slipping. That would mean that the belt has stretched over the years and needs to be replaced. The other possibility is that the chuck and drill press shaft turn but the bit doesn’t. That would mean that the bit is spinning inside the chuck so the chuck needs to be tighter. That often happens with keyless drill chucks. If neighbor of those two things are happening and your drill press motor has stalled out then it is very likely it is underpowered for Forstner bits, especially larger diameters.

Thanks for watching. I appreciate the feedback. In my more recent videos I’ve cut back on the sound effects. It’s difficult to zero in on what everyone likes but I’m learning.
