The more we talked to Doug the more interesting his story became.. I had no idea about most of this stuff when we showed up that day. The world would be a better place if more people responded to hard times with productive action like Doug has. I also can't wait to hear those two Viper V10 engines running! stapletonautoworks.com

In 1975 I broke my back in an off road motorcycle accident. I came back to my parents in a wheelchair and paralyzed from the hips down. When I heard about Doug Hebert losing two kids it hit me hard being a drag racing fan for the last 60 years. I knew of his Dad and I was a fan of Doug when he raced Top Fuel. I was always impressed with the way Doug came to terms with such a loss. I know the stress my spinal cord injury placed on my parents and I can't imagine what Doug felt. He remains a hero for persevering and for pressing on with his life because accidents are never pretty and sometimes they just happen. As always, keep up the great work with this channel.

@@michaelfowler8289 Get up and out when you can. I spent the first two and half years post Spinal Cord Injury(SCI) feeling sorry for myself and ashamed of my broken body. I was introduced to wheelchair sports which has been a huge part of my life for the last 46 years. I've traveled the world as an elite athlete and coach. I've worked at and with athletes at the Olympic and Paralympic level. Best move I made was giving up my dream of being a machinist(got tired of fixing too many flat tires on my wheelchair) and going back to school to learn how to chase my other dream of being a world class coach and sports scientist. It's all out there if you believe in your dreams and you seek what is really important to you. I am stuck inside now because of non SCI problems. I stay busy and I attempt to stay relevant as a coach and scientist. My goal is to wring every last ounce out this body before my time ends. Hang in there and keeping active mentally and physically. Finally, never think you are alone. There are a lot of good people in this world so keep asking questions and be strong.
I wish this video was about 2 hours longer. I could of listened/ watched more about that land speed car and i wanted to see and hear more about the viper, caddy, the old top fuel car and especially his shop. Plus just all the stories and bad ass history he could tell. One of the reasons i like watching these videos is because they arent usually rushed in anyway and it's always just super interesting conversations about cool shops, parts, cars, racing and its like your just giving really cool people the chance to tell their life stories. And i really appreciated this one and just hope there will be more with Doug 👍👍

I really love how Doug found purpose in the pain of losing his sons and he's making a positive change in the world. The Bonneville car sounds like it will be one wild ride when completed - land speed racing isn't my most favorite thing in motorsports but I have to admire the work and innovation that goes into them to make them do what they do. Can't even imagine what 500 mph would be like.
Great to hear both You & Logan in on the Video...what an awesome project..can't wait to hear that run..
It's good to see you again Doug. I had been thinking about you. How you've been doing , wondering what you had been doing lately.

Favorite car ?? you'll never see one on the street anymore but a Tucker 48 but what you do see on the road any old GM car really. Distributor in rear 392 Distributor in front 426 plus the old Harmon Collins magneto made in LA.. You have to commend Doug for being able to turn a life altering tragedy in to a positive for others. It's takes a special person to take on and complete this life saving program. Thanks again Guy's for everything you do

As I'm watching this, I have one of the injection stacks from one of Goldenrods 4 hemi engines in my hands. I can't believe how much technology has change since then as I look at Doug's setup. The injection stack I'm holding is 8in long and bent in a certain angle so as to clear the frame and valve covers. Doug's injection stack is 10feet long and the thought process that went into that application makes my head hurt. Goldenrod is now in the Henery Ford Museum in Dearborn, and if you didn't know it set the record for wheel-driven vehicles at 409.277 miles per hour at Bonneville Salt Flats in 1965. The record stood for 26 years. Driven by Bob Summers. Goldenrod was restored by my friend Mike Cook, son of Doug Cook (Stone Woods & Cook). They wanted all new stacks and valve covers on all the engines before going into the museum.
GREAT VIDEO STAPLETON!!! I STILL HAVE 2 CHET HERBERT CAMS HATS THAT WERE MY DAD'S! BACK in the teens we were pit across from Doug at Indy... he's a straight up gentleman, and a fierce COMPETITOR! I completely enjoyed this trip in my heart and soul my friend, thank you!! Keep on little brother! Respectfully, Seth [[ TO reiterate/reinforce what Doug said... you should watch the movie about " BURT MUNRO ' it is dear to most any racer we know ]] !
Good to see you do something different than Nascar again. Not saying this as a bad thing but it's just been a while

Yeah he's been in it knee deep forever! All young drivers should take advice from him, especially being a professional driver with massive training on how to correct etc and way higher speeds but it all translates or adapts over at slower speeds too.
last vignette. Chet had a twin chevy sidewinder (lots of powerglide slipper clutches in a tube between the engines) It liked to loop half way down the track. I suggested that it was "too short" and said try grafting Lefty's TF front end on the Sidewinder to stretch it Never happened. Later at Lions I asked Chet what happened to the sidewinder he said "too short". We also found out that the steering was "too fast" I'm going to follow your progress Doug
Great program Doug has there for young drivers

miss your dad and Lefty. I went to Cado Mills TX in 62 where we won both top fuel with the dual 452 (327) chevies with Zane driving and top gas with the twin 402 chevies with lefty driving Greasy track so we took the stacks off and tightened the lash on the "400" degrees cams. Lots of memories but the most lasting was the sportsmanship where one competitor who had lost his round loaned his engine to his competitor for the finals It's not like that anymore.
Thank you so much!!!!! I've been looking forward to seeing this car on the salt for a very long time! Herbert is awesome to listen to!
I taught my kids how to drive. I’d purposely drive off the side of the road and rode there for several hundred feet while explaining there’s no reason to panic. Then I’d have them watch my steering wheel input as I slowed and barely turned the wheel and car was back on road. They were always surprise how little input was required in the steering wheel. Then I’d make them get in the drivers seat and do the same thing. Over correction can be deadly.

I would say I have a major appreciation for anything someone shows an obvious love and passion for, from rat rods to restored Cadillacs to all original unrestored muscle cars but I think if I had to pick a favourite build style it would be a tie between gassers and the late 80s/ early 90s pro street cars!!

Thanks for sharing. I learned a lot . I remember his dad but had know idea Doug was his son.😳🤷♂️
My favorite car was a 1965 Chrysler Imperial. I was 19 years old and everywhere I would go everyone thought it was so so cool, and it was. It was a 2 door, new Burgundy paint job, beautiful black leather with real wood grain. I drove it to the 1972 Daytona 500.
Another great video. I love his shop. Got the poker table going and and the Rockola...awesome. Nice office, like that layout. That caddy is a cool car. When i was a kid like 9 or so, my dad had a 63 caddy like that, hardtop. Big old tuna boat, he had it painted white, upholstery redone, it was a nice car. Prior to that i remember an old dodge desoto. It was kind of a mint green, primer spots on it, some rust around the wheel openings on all the fenders, a real rattle trap. it had the push button trans in the left corner of the dash which was different and kinda cool actually. Really sad that he lost his son's. But like you said, turning that pain into something really good that has saved a lot of others out there on the streets is a great thing. Kudo's to you Doug for that. Looking forward to see more of this bonneville car when it's finished and making those runs. It would be great if you guys could cover that too. Can't wait to see him make that happen really cool video buddy thanks you and your hunny have a great weekend
Cool to see something a bit different. The land speed cars are cool because it's anything goes within the class and safety rules like drag racing used to be, and there are a lot of classes which combine body type classes and engine type, displacement, and fuel classes. Favorite classic American cruiser like the Caddy is the '56 Continental.
Aviation ballistic recovery chute designed to open at any speed, expand to full open the slower it goes. You may not need the ballistic part to that safety recovery system but keeping a chute from going open to full bloom to quickly, safely, might be a feature to look into.
Very interesting. Passionate and Strong Racer for sure 👌👌👍👍
