At the age of 59 (two years ago) after being a Protestant my whole life, I converted to Catholicism. One of the major reasons why was the REVERENCE given to God during mass. Lamb of God songs literally choke me up. The alter IS where heaven meets earth. I am in the choir and also do some cantering. Whenever we sing in Latin, acapella, in 4 parts, that is truly soul healing for me. I have been to a Latin mass once (it was a pretty long drive out there), but yes, we felt more of “heaven meets earth” there.

@@carleen5345 I am a cradle Catholic. I was born in 1945 now going 75. Before Vatican II most masses were Latin and the songs were Gregorian and wearing veils was a must. I can still remember how the voices echoed in the entire Church. Our playground was the Churchyard, we played until dusk. When the Church bells rang for the "Angelus", we stopped playing. Our Parish Priest would come out by the Church door to join us in prayer then we lined up to kiss his hands. During the whole month of May, we offer flowers every day to Mother Mary, we call it "Flores de Mayo" as May is devoted to her and also the Catechism month. It is still being practiced in the Philippines, my home country. 90% of our people are cradle Catholics. My generation missed so much the Latin Mass and the Gregorian chant. Now only a few Churches are doing this.

It should sound strange, but it doesn't. I'm a cradle Catholic, also over 50, but was surrounded by mostly nominals most of my life. When I started looking deeper a few years ago, it didn't take long for me to realize that some of the strongest Catholics are former Protestants. It may not be my fault that I was not catechized well, but I don't see that as an excuse to be lazy and not study now, as unfortunately too many do. I admit I have a lot of catching up to do. I've already learned more in the last 2.5 years than I did in my first 49.

That's because the faith is so poorly taught to Catholic kids! I'm a little older than you and I remember the nuns playing Jesus Christ Superstar in religion class! Thank you! I was born cradle catholic, left the Church when i was 15, this year i am 32. It was the latin mass that brought me back and teaches me more than i was before. I was back in the late Oct of 2015, my first encounter with the latin mass. It is just in this community, that i felt the altar is no other ordinary altar, the worship mass was something special, the gregorian chant calms our souls after the long hours in the hectic world. With words i cant explain well enough the experience, but all i can say even after all these years back in the Church, the latin mass, gregorian chant, the reverence, the love and passion, the latin rosary, latin litanies, just made the mysteries so beautiful. I am too, like you not a hardcore latin guy, but we cant deny that the latin mass just has that special touch on souls that you feel the calmness, the love from God, the peace from God. Next, i would suggest to visit our eastern catholic brothers divine liturgy, not eastern orthodox but our eastern catholic brothers.

Child of God, don't you wish peace to your neighbour (whoever that may be - check out the Good Samaritan)? Should we go back to the days when you had to fast from midnight before receiving Communion? (that's the only way we could process the number of Communicants today if we reverted to altar rails). Many people in those days were denied the chance almost ever to receive the Body and Blood of Christ because their working life didn't permit them to attend a Mass early enough that they could fast before attending Mass. Did you read what Jesus said when asked why his disciples didn't wash their hands before sitting down to eat ( Jesus answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? Matthew 15;3) Don't the words "come as you are, that's how i want you" have any meaning to you? Where in the world are female deacons practising? Should the congregation not be able to join in with the Mass? - one of the themes of Vatican II was that people should not only attend Mass but take part in and understand what is going on during the Mass. That is much easier if you can see the celebration - and so you are better able to focus on God during the Mass. Perhaps you think that Muslims have it right when they insist that women worship at the back of the mosque? Wouldn't you be happier with Keith Nester's view of the Mass, that there is a place for both TLM and for Novus Ordo. Peace be with you brother or sister

Just happened upon this video. I am a convert from Judaism, as well as a "retired" priest who offers the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. I do enjoy on Sundays and Holy Days when I am only assigned one Mass at a parish visits to Eastern Rite Catholic Liturgies. As St. John XXIII commented on the Eastern and Western Churches to know both is to breathe with both lungs of the Church. While I do have a strong preference for the Older Rites, (Latin Mass, including the Roman, Mozarabic, Dominican, and Ambrosian Uses) Yes there are several Rites among us Latins. But also the Byzantine, Chaldean, Coptic and other Eastern Rites of the Church. I think what people sometimes miss is the Mass I offer is not my work, but the work of Christ. He is the primary celebrant at each Mass, of whatever rite. When I was a child in a Jewish family, each year we would celebrate the Seder at Passover. One of the things that strikes me about the Mass and the Seder (which Christ Jesus used to institute the Mass and Eucharist. ) In the Seder, we were taught that by participating in the Seder, we could not say we were remembering what God did for our ancestors, but that by participating in the Seder, we must now say, we are celebrating what God has done for me. The Exodus became present by God's power through the Seder. So too at Mass, Christ mystically takes us to the Upper Room and the Foot of the Cross, and as His presence in the Eucharist is the Living Resurrected Christ, we also are present at the Resurrection when we are at Mass. Mass in any Rite approved by the Church.

If someone wants to deapen their relationship with the HOLY TRINITY, the TLM is a must. In my opinion the novus ordo can only take you so far. It's merely catechetical. The TLM is contemplative and catechetical.

I totally agree with you about the disgustingness of brining the world into the mass. I recall attending a mass at a school I taught at when they sang “puff the magic dragon “ and John Lennon’s “imagine”. YUK! I grew up with the Latin mass and I have to tell you I much preferred the mass in English. I couldn’t understand what’s the big deal with Latin? Music was what drew me to the Latin Mass. Keith, I was born in 1963, just as things were changing in the church. By the time I made my first Communion and was confirmed, everything was in English, and the priest faced the people. I knew almost nothing about the Latin Mass. I began to get really curious, however, when I first heard sacred polyphonic music. If you think Gregorian Chant is awesome, (and it is) polyphony will really blow your mind! When I learned that this was music for the Mass, I really wanted to hear it *IN THE MASS.* When I found a parish near me that had regular Latin Mass, I started going, gradually learned more about it, and gradually fell in love with it. I've been going ever since. God bless you, my friend.

I served as an acolyte for Latin mass for three and a half years and I agree with everything you say here. I actually was offered the chance to join the choir and sing the motets but I was taking up communion at the time and ended up serving as an acolyte. I loved going through the mass and hearing the music from the altar (It also was a bit stressful as I would always try to anticipate what the celebrant father needed in the Mass before he would actually need it. But the fathers appreciated my efforts.) I actually found some solace as I worked on learning how to chant the readings and began to serve as a novice lector. The priests and congregation were happy with my ability to recite the readings and offertory prayers. The beauty of the Latin Mass is something I wish more people appreciated; I'm glad you have come to appreciate it.

Thanks for sharing Keith. The Latin Mass is amazing! All the sacraments and prayers in the old rite are incredible. We had #7 in May and we were fortunate to have a new priest at our parish (age 27) who was willing to baptize baby Therese in the old rite and it was such an experience. Multiple exorcism prayers with Blessed salt placed on the tongue of the baby (mouths were consecrated in the old rite baptism which is cool) :) That said, I did/do feel robbed that we laity have had all of this amazing tradition hidden or pushed aside for the sake of stripping it down. I learned last year that even the holy water blessing is different. Anyhow, I’m just happy that I can share all of this with the kids and help them experience all of what the church is.

As a cradle Catholic (aged 82) I have experienced all types of Holy Mass from Solemn High Mass to 'happy clappy' & I have to say that I just love the day-to-day Low Mass which is (for me) so much more prayerful &, bear in mind, I have been a choirmaster at the usus antiquior. My marriage (in 2006) was a Solemn High Mass with 3 choirs & a Dominican preacher & my feeling is that such Masses are for special occasions while the Low Mass is (for me) much more personal.

The solemnity of the High Mass, that I used to serve at boarding school in England, with the English Benedictines. It was even more special than what goes for a Latin Mass today. As a thurifer, at the head of the procession and recession, the pace was bridal slow and the thurible was swung shoulder high and given a 360 on the turn. We wore crimson cassocks with white angel wing surplices. Now something that you all should knw about Gregorian Chant, it is based on 432 Hz, which is one of two known basic healing frequencies. The other being 528 Hz. The 432 Hz is also know as the Verdi frequency as up to 1938 all orchestras were tuned to this frequency. But the basic frequency behind the two is the earth's frequency of 9.6 Hz. The latest healing therapy for all neuroloogical, and immune disease is PEMF (Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field) therapy. It uses the earth's frequncy of 9.6 Hz pulsed in a square wave form so that all the harmonics are used. If you divide 9.6 Hz into 432 Hz you get 45 and into 520 Hz you get 55 so you see they are direct harmonics of 9.6 Hz. It's amazing how science is directly connected to the Catholic Faith and healing of Mind/Body/Spirit.

Actually the Norvus Ordo Mass when done respectfully and reverently, and as long as we do not draw attention to ourselves, is beautiful in it's own rite. And it actually looks a lot more like the early Church than the TLM. Both are beautiful and both feed us from the table of the word, and the table of the Eucharist.

Keith, I agree 💯 that music has a power to move us towards and on the flip side away (some awful stuff out there) from the Holy Spirit. Even the difference from having an pipe organ or piano is amazing. My wish is that the Novus Orda could be more reverent. I'm trying myself by bowing before Our Lord in Communion. I'm not judging people's hearts but if we all could approach the altar and receive in a more reverent way I think it would help not only ourselves but those who are struggling to find that feeling in the soul when it feels like it's completely full of Christ's love and radiating out. 🙏✝️ 💓💞. A little taste of heaven. Another great video. 👍👍

Great share. The latin mass as a high mass is beautiful. Just want to make a distinction for your followers that the mass you reference is a high mass. Thats the one with the chant etc. A low mass is also available at a TLM parish but its read by the priest while congregation is silent. Its a different experience but still elevating.

I began serving the Latin Mass as an altar boy having to learn responses in Latin. I had no idea what the responses meant in English. Maybe one of the reasons that Protestants said we do not know the Bible is that the priest said the epistle (New Testament) and the gospel to the wall. You would hear an English translation of the gospel before the sermon on Sundays and holy days. You want to experience of the Latin service? Try the Holy Saturday Vigil liturgy in Latin with three priests and a mess of altarboys. By high school I was MC for the service and got to hold the missal for the celebrant. I learned to read Latin upside-down. I agree with you about 60s’ church songs. Songs written for guitar should never be played on an organ.

Thank you Keith! I hear you on all of this; so, so true! The TLM went away when I was in my mid-teens. The high altar got moved in the middle of the night to the side in 1965. I know that now, because they just moved it back 57 years later and there was a newspaper inside from then. No one seems to know who did it even!! I am so happy to see things come full circle in my life time!🥰✝ Our daughter-in-law's uncle is now designing kneeling rails for both our parishes. I was sad to hear that one set got parceled out into people's gardens back in '65. Our daughter's wedding Mass was the first Traditional Latin Wedding Mass in our church in 46 years. Since we have a big musical family, we do most of the music for our events, even my husband's funeral a year ago. It is so beautiful and healing to sing and hear The Church's timeless traditional music! Here are some of our favorite Latin Mass parts: Kyrie: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Yqap0ticqdOonLQ.html Sanctus/Benedictus: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dnx1mM9uldewZtY.html Agnus Dei: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqCMr9iuaN28qMY.html The original Crucifix appeared at a daily Mass in the mid-90s. I was having flash backs the minute I walked into the church! We had a flat ceramic, huge, suspended Jesus with no cross for many years. Then they built a cross that size and moved Him back to the wall. So this huge cross was there still when the original Corpus was put back. When the altar got moved back, they had to cut the Cross size down and move it up for the High Altar to fit! We have been so blessed with a choir director since the 80s that kept the Latin music alive all these years so that when our current pastor started doing a Novus Ordo Latin Mass every Saturday night, David Phillips was on it! For the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, our Parish Feast Day, "Saint Mary Our Lady of the Presentation" Parish, our choir was completely ready to do all the Latin music and we sing it during Lent as well. We are also so blessed to have Traditional Latin Masses in three local Eugene, OR Area parishes, including several daily Masses. That is how we attended for the 2 Covid years since our small town country parish priest just added Masses until we all fit; 6 per weekend! Half English and half Latin. His little country parish doubled in size where our big downtown parish is dtill begging people to come back.

Oh wow you gave me goosebumps, in all my years of being Catholic, I have never gone to a Latin Mass, but it' been on my heart for months now, literally months. Last year a co-worker told me about a Latin Mass he and his family attend every Sunday and because it's a bit out of the way I never got around to going. But this Sunday...it's happening!!! Thank you for once again inspiring me and you are so right "mass should not be of this world." I left the Catholic church 5 years ago to go to a Bible church and one of the main draws was the contemporary , upbeat, worship music, but I soon realized I was going for all the wrong reasons. There was no mention of the Blessed Virgin Mary, no "Our Father", no celebration of the transubstantiation at Eucharist which for this church, was purely symbolic and only 1 Sunday a month. The peace in my soul since returning to Catholicism, going to confession and receiving communion has been overwhelming. I am finally home and home to stay.

Keith, you took the words right out of my mind. I don’t know if chant touches my soul as deeply as it touches yours, but now I can barely tolerate listening to the post-Vatican-II touchy-feely music that was popularized by OCP, and I definitely don’t want to hear any of it at Mass. In my humble opinion, every Catholic should (be enabled to) attend at least one Traditional Latin Mass. I didn’t even know that it was still in use until I was invited to attend one about 14 months ago; now I’m a regular.

And the most interesting thing is when you receive the holy eucharistic you have to kneel down, I've never done that in the novos ordo church. Just last Sunday October 20th I finally had the Grace to find a little church in my hometown in northern Italy and attend to the first Latin Mass in my life and... I simply loved the all of it! The respectful silence of all the people there, men leading the rosary in latin before the Mass, the solemnity of the Liturgy, the dignity of the priest re established, no distractions, no mobile phones ringing.. the all of us were focused to the Sacrifice of Our Lord Jesus. And I wondered how could have been that we abandoned all of this? I use to go to Mass daily but, since that moment my Sunday Mass will be only the Latin Mass. I just can't wait for next Sunday. God Bless.

Welcome aboard Keith. You have been given an incalculable gift from God. And when we speak about validity in reference to the sacraments, we mean they effect what they signify. So the novus ordo can be valid. However, it is a polyvalent liturgy, which means it's accepted by non Catholic churches also. Not so with the Roman Mass. So it takes a while and I hope you keep studying. God bless.
