It startles me that people leave church for realizing they’re a sinner and don’t measure up to the law; that’s when you go into church. Jesus came to save sinners, if a sinner can’t go to church, that church doesn’t preach the gospel of Jesus.

Cos as far as i'm aware Romans gives 3rd party accounts of Jesus without providing factual evidence. None of the "characters" have surnames including those who, so called, wrote the gospels. Their characters are neither corroborated by anyone or by those who knew them when they were alive. The first records of any gospel are found some 60 years after Jesus left the Earth so the authors could not have known Jesus personally. There are no records of factual accounts of what Jesus actually said with his own words. No record of his likes/dislikes or what his mother (Mary) describes of his character or what he said. Mary would have outlived Jesus yet there are no recorded accounts of what she said why? Jesus played no part in the writing of the bible. he didn't request that it be written neither did he say his followers should believe in the bible and thats a fact.

Some Christians can't bear that anyone could find fault with their precious beliefs. So they'll blame anything and everything except the beliefs themselves. Josh is pretty clear in saying he finds many things about Christianity objectionable. It's not Christians he has a problem with.... it's Christian doctrines. He didn't like himself as a Christian so he said enough is enough. As a famous atheist once said... I have no problem with Christians, it's your beliefs I can't stand.

But what he's saying is in the bible. God had the ten commandments and Jesus added even more rules onto that. Very specific rules on how you're supposed to live. He even says that the way is narrow and few who find it. What do you think that means? It means you're unlikely to be living a life righteous enough for God to accept you. BECAUSE OF ALL THE RULES THAT ARE PRETTY MUCH IMPOSSIBLE TO FOLLOW! You basically have to be a monk.

He said follow my Church (that which the gates of hell cannot swallow). But Protestantism is not the Church because it has no apostolic succession. It is the fruit of heretical and peevish men not the faith once handed down - hence 40,000 denominations. But that all makes sense when you think about the fact that although Calvin, Zwingli and Luther all agreed that the Scriptures were clear on everything they all disagreed with each other angrily about specific and vital doctrines. Open your eyes Protestants and come back to the Church that came into existence on Pentecost, not the one that got mad at Rome and gave birth to the “enlightenment” which generated modern atheism. Eastern Orthodoxy is the only true faith.

@@lchimenz We are saved through faith NOT of works, BUT faith without works is dead. For example, you cannot say you believe its going to rain but you dont take an ombrella with you because then you are a hypocrite and true faith requires action and requires that you take an ombrella. The same with God we are saved through faith BUT if we say we have faith and that we love our father is it OK for us to sin repeatedly and saying it doesn't matter its ok I am saved because I was born again and received the holy spirit, its okay if I sin. Here is what the bible says: For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.” And it also says: "For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt." "For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries." You say we start living the life of law. But that's not entirely true because if we are start living by the law we die from the law because the law condemn us. None will survive from the law because none is innocent and without sin, thats why we need Jesus and his grace. We DONT live by the law, BUT Jesus said he that loves me follows my commandments, and whoever does the will of the father is my brother and my mother. So we dont live by the law BUT we follow the law so we can please God and live a holy life. We do it for Him, not because we are going to be judged by the law, but because if we trully love him we must FOLLOW his law and his commandments and do his will. Lastly, if you read revelation Jesus is talking to the 7 churches. From those seven only 2 are found to be doing Gods will. The 5 are warned to repent or they will perish. Jesus himself has sent us his holy spirit to guides and correct us, shows us what we must do. If we dont do those things and we go against his will you think thats OK?

Is it ok to sin, after receiving the knowledge of truth? Doesn't Jesus say if you love me follow my commandments? We are saved through faith NOT of works. But faith without works is dead. The bible says He that overcomes and endures to the end will be saved. Theres a difference between legalism and doing Gods will and following his commandments. We are condemned by the law thats why we need grave but Jesus tells us to do his will and follow his commandments. Because he that says that is a christian but not follow the word of God and doesn't do the will of God and follow his commandments is a hypocrite and God is going to judge Him.

I can't see down the road 5 years and ten years, but when you realize that the earth is round, you can't go back to believing it's flat. Why shouldn't they? They just don't have to rely on a holy book to tell them what their sex life should be like, or whether or not they should be married. Just like most Christians - you'r thinking the worst possible consequences for someone else's sex life.

@@pwoods100 We could never fulfill the law by living a perfectly righteous life, only Jesus did that since He is God. He took my sin, your sin. and the world's sin to the cross. There on the cross, He suffered God's wrath because God is holy and every sin must be brought to justice. People, every day slip into eternity because they don't receive Jesus' blood bought payment for their souls, they reject God and His gift and suffer in hell, eternally separated from God. Sinners are not saved by doing good and following rules, sinners are saved by God's all consuming grace that was poured out through His blood on the cross. After His blood was poured out, He trampled death and sin by coming back to life. When a Christian follows Christ, it's living a certain way (sexually pure, honest, upright conversation, faithful), we do this because this is how Jesus lived and we are supposed to be an example to this dark world of what the light looks like. God forbid that we would be hypocrites! We also walk like Jesus walked, because we love Him. The world may come up with their own boundaries, but God's Word is the ultimate standard because It is, it has always been, and it will always be. He loves us, He did everything to win us. But He also loves us so much, to give us freewill. He will never force someone to accept His grace or walk on His path, but we will be without excuse when we stand before Him.

We need to kiss legalism and misplaced fear goodbye, but let’s not think that kissing biblical truth goodbye is how we get there. Pray for Josh who has publically renounced his faith recently. This rubber band effect often results out of people's experience with religious control, which many of us were taught under. When our choices don't produce outcomes that we were assured of, we have decisions to make. After that, many either trust God as He really is and love Him, or they will walk away from faith completely. This is sad...when leaders use their family relationships or authoritative roles to control the vulnerable, that is one level of power. But when they bring God into it, their power can seem almost endless. For young people of real faith who want to please God, those in biblical authority connected to "the truth" hold massive power. I mean, you go against them and you are going against God?! As a person who loves God and senses His presence in my life, I still sometimes work at separating cult-like teaching from truth. Only by God's grace have I remained in Him and deeply interested in knowing the difference between, darkness, false teaching, and the true light of His tender voice.

It was indeed legalistic nonsense and Harris rather than trying to leave God behind needs to learn about grace. @Skinny Bones Jones A) He wrote a book based OFF OF scripture- not based IN scripture. The Bible honestly has very little to say regarding how to begin a romantic relationship with a member of the opposite sex. B) You may be baffled by how unbiblical our nation is, but remember, we do not live under a theocratic government. Not everyone in our nation is Christian. Though you may not like it, it would be wise to be understanding of that. C) You cannot definitively say that courtship IS what God intended. You can take the few passages of scripture referring to romantic relationships to interpret as such. However, you cannot truly state that as fact. While it is certainly not true of all people, I would argue that most people date to find the person they are intended to be with. Approaching a relationship with the idea of courtship carries so much weight and pressure. I know of many women in the church who seem to think every offer a date within courtship means it'll lead to an offer of marriage and that is simply not true. Contrastively, I know many men in the church afraid to ask out a woman/begin a courtship, because of the intense pressure they may feel to rush into marriage. Courtships can fail. Dating relationships can also come to an end, as they should if they two individuals decide they are not right for each other. It IS possible to date without making out or giving into sexual desires.

Skinny Bones Jones All I was trying to say is the dating vs courtship argument shouldn’t be such a controversial topic within the church. There is a subtle difference between the two. If a couple is engaged in a Biblical practices, it really shouldn’t matter. The church puts too much emphasis on pointless things like whether or not it’s ok to kiss before marriage, or even hold hands. Books like the ones Harris wrote suggested kissing your partner prior to marriage is potentially wrong. I cannot agree with that.

Believers don't stop needing God's grace and forgiveness just because they start believing in Jesus. Our righteousness is not defined by our good deeds. It is imputed to us by Jesus. We will continue to sin until the day we die and our righteousness is made complete with a new body that doesn't sin. Josh's doctrine is all messed up. He is blinded by strict legalism.

It happened to me when I went through a dark period of fear of losing my salvation because I felt like I was always letting God down. Jeremiah 33:3 changed my life, and was the turning point in receiving confirmed revelation of the gospel of grace. It restored my joy, and I was free from worry and condemnation. Its refreshing to see someone ( you) who understands the true gospel of grace!!! Its sad for us to see people deciding to just stop believing. But from what I see, and know about scripture is these people who "turn" or "fall" away were never truly born again. Jesus tells us in the seed parable that one specific group will have fertile ground for the seed to grow..Very sad indeed. We need to pray for the folks at his church..God bless

Praise GOD Brother! I Rejoice to hear that you are Seeking The LORD and have returned unto HIM! HIS Patience and Mercy is truly beyond comprehension. When you truly Seek HIM you are guaranteed to find HIM as it is Written in Hebrews "without Faith it is impossible to please GOD, for he who comes unto GOD must Believe HE Is, and HE is a REWARDER of those who diligently Seek HIM." If I could give you a word of Exhortation and Encouragement, it would be what GOD has really began to reveal to me and teach me on what this Life HE has Given in CHRIST is all about and how to live Victorious in it. It is all about Beholding HIM Attentively with unveiled face through HIS WORD and in daily Fellowship in Prayer and Praising HIM, and as you do you will be Transformed from Glory to Glory by The SPIRIT Of GOD. Also, it is all about Abiding in JESUS, and reckoning yourself as being actually dead, that The Life of CHRIST may flow through you. As JESUS Said a branch cannot bear fruit unless it abides in The VINE, neither can we unless we Abide in HIM. A branch does not strive to bear fruit, it simply Yields itself to The Will of The VINE and The VINE gives Life from itself to the branch and supplies all that the branch needs to grow and bear fruit. Also as we continue to Surrender to HIS Will The GREAT VINEDRESSER will Prune our branches that we may bear even more Fruit. You have been made a New Creation in CHRIST, the old things have passed away, therefore let The Cross of CHRIST utterly Slay your old man and leave him buried in the grave, and Walk in The Newness of Life according The SPIRIT and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. As Paul said "I am Crucified with CHRIST, and yet I Live, yet not I, but CHRIST Lives in me, and the Life I now Live I Live by The Faith of The SON Of GOD Who Loved me and Gave HIMSELF for me." Fix your eyes on JESUS, The AUTHOR and FINISHER of our Faith, our HIGH PRIEST Who can sympathize with our weakness and supply all we need to Overcome. Let us Come Boldly to The Throne Of Grace where we may find Mercy and Grace to Help in our time of need. I Pray that you would Grow Abundantly in HIS Grace and Bear Much Fruit. I Pray The LORD would use this in anyway to Increase your Faith and be a Blessing in your Walk with HIM. I know it is hard sometimes, for we as People who truly want to Follow CHRIST to find Brothers and Sisters to Fellowship with, so if you ever want to talk about things or ask some questions, reach out to me Brother. A good example of the prosperity gospel believing "christian". I hesitate to even use the word. Being a true Christian is a lifetime struggle with sin. We must remain penitent _always_ because we are _always_ sinning! *Jeremiah 17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it?" ASV* It is difficult for nonbelievers to understand how someone can "turn it off" like Josh has appeared to do when he said he has "excommunicated" himself. Well, if you have truly repented and are a child of the Sovereign God, you cannot walk away. We understand that from *1John **2:19** "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they all are not of us. NAS* So, Josh Harris was probably a false convert. I really do hope Josh Harris and his wife repent and allow God to heal their marriage.

One, I believe, that majority of my generation have waited longer to get married. It has been proven that couples who get married after the age of 25 are less likely to get a divorce. I was married at the age of 26 and lived with my husband for roughly four year prior to our marriage. I would hope that in the last four months since you made this post that someone may have steered you in the right direction. Absolutely no church that the Apostle Paul or the other Apostles had been established on man's tradition of religion. The very first churches were established by the apostle Paul and the other apostles in the first century based on scripture following the death of Jesus. Read the book of Acts. They were well aware of the sinful nature of the gentile nations and the Corinthians were a prime example of excommunication from the church for incest between a mother and son. Your explanation of Jesus drawing sinners to Himself was off base since all the sinners brought before Him, He specifically told them that their faith had healed them and to go and sin no more. These were not churches based on the tradition of men like so many are today, no, they are based upon the Rock, the cornerstone the builders rejected, Jesus the Christ who gave His life for the world. The apostle Paul was very clear of what the church expectations were to be if there were people that still lived after their sinful lusts and desires and such people cannot enter into the Kingdom of Heaven to stand before a holy God while steeped in their unholy sin. They were driven out and only to be received back after they had repented. Just as the Lords Prayer states, "Thy will be done , on earth as it is in Heaven". Nobody still living in their unrepentant sinful nature was to be allowed to live within the confines of a repentant church. You obviously have not read your bible or you would have known this. That's why we should never put our trust in men and that every word that comes out of a pastor, priest or preacher should be tested by scripture, and the context of that scripture and not by the commentary of some priest. Be a good Berean and search the scriptures whether what they say is true. Come to Jesus in repentance and ask He send the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to the truth. Amen.

That's the problem today in Christendom, people live their lives based on bestsellers when they should be living their lives based on the incorruptible word of God. Admitting ones shortcomings before God and people is the right thing, but turning back on God, who has been good to you all these while is not the right thing. Leaving the ministry is ok but please don't stop having faith in God and living a peaceful quiet life in the Lord. Popularity is ruining many a ministers these days, I believe in living a quiet, peaceful, unpopular life in the Lord. I would rather have Jesus than silver or gold, following after Jesus is the way of the cross, Jesus did not live for himself but for the Father, we should not live for ourselves but for Jesus only. We all make mistakes, I pray that our dear brother comes back to the Lord in faith because unlike people, the Father always waits at the gate to welcome his sons and daughters home, let the elder sons complain, but as long as the Father wants you home it doesn't matter. Religion is the home of the hypocrite but "grace through faith", is the home of the saved, Jesus died and rose again to give us an abundant life not a rotten, " What will the world say" Religion.

I've been studying the Bible literally hours per day for forty years and He is still teaching me things. Along the way, I had questions too, but through persevering and staying with studying, God answers those questions. I want to share some reasons why we should trust the Bible; There have been over one thousand Bible prophecies literally fulfilled, 256 concerning the birth, life, ministry and death of Jesus Christ alone, and over 100 scientific facts in the Bible most of which were found in the book of Genesis (first book of the Bible) written over three thousand years ago, which weren't "discovered" by the scientists of the world until the last 500 years. If you made one of these scientific discoveries, you'd be in textbooks all around the world, and if you made four or five, you'd be in the scientist's hall of fame, along with Isaac Newton, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Albert Einstein. But whoever wrote the Bible made over 100 of these scientific declarations, to go along with the 1,000 fulfilled prophecies. So, since the Bible in literally hundreds of place claims to be written by God, you must come to this conclusion; either God DID write the Bible, or some liar did. What makes more sense; some liar, who would have to be, by far, the greatest prophet ever and by far the greatest scientist ever, wrote the Bible, or God is indeed the author of the Bible? Just one of these scientific declarations in scripture is found in the very first verse of the Bible; "In the beginning, God created the heavens, and the earth... said 'let there be light.'" Stephen Hawking, in a groundbreaking discovery said, that matter, space, energy, and time itself all had a beginning. That is precisely what God says in Genesis chapter one; "In the beginning (reference to time having a beginning) God created the heavens, (space) and the earth (matter) and said, "Let there be light." (energy) Up until Galileo developed the telescope 500 years ago, astronomers thought there were somewhere between 4,000-10,000 stars. But when Galileo peered through his telescope, he realized we couldn’t even begin to count the stars, Yet God in the Bible, thousands of years BEFORE Galileo made his discovery, compared the number of stars in the sky to sand along the seashore. I could go on and on. You say you left Christianity? How do you think the universe came into existence? The Big Bang? This theory says, if we go back about 14 billion years we have NOTHING; no matter, no energy, no space, and not even any time. And then suddenly a singularity popped into existence. It was the smallest atom ever, and in this tiny atom was all the energy, matter, space and even time itself of the entire universe. It suddenly exploded and sent into motion what would become this vast universe with at LEAST two trillion galaxies, each with about 2 hundred billion stars, and here on earth, life. If before the singularity, there was no space, where did the singularity come into existence, if no energy, how did it come into existence, and if time didn't exist UNTIL the singularity, when did it come into existence? Also, evolution claims to explain how life evolved, BUT it doesn't even attempt to explain how life started. Look at any biology textbook; it says, according to biogenesis, that all life comes from other life, with no exceptions. Life comes from God.

I believe that discipline in the church should aim to restore people's relationships with God not to destroy them. With that in mind, we as leaders should be working on ourselves also to keep things right with God. Most importantly, we need to understand that Jesus has already paid it all so that everyone can freely receive forgiveness. Therefore, if we keep charging ourselves as guilty even though we ask for forgiveness, that is devil idea and it means that the cross wasn't enough to pay the ransom. I encourage everyone to look at the cross and see the price that Jesus has paid for us, His blood that washes away our sins.

I felt pressure to “court” for marriage instead of date around so I settled and married the wrong girl. I’m an atheist now, divorced, with a child I love but who has to grow up in a split household. Drop the religious stuff, think for yourself and only believe that which has evidence. See the world and responsibly experience whatever it is you want to experience. Bottling it up for Jesus is just a recipe for unhappiness down the road.

Don't worry about how you feel. Turn to Christ and talk with Him thru Scripture and prayer. Talk with Christians that you see are wise and grounded in practice based on Scripture. Too many people try to substitute media sources for the harder more patient way. Evaluate what you read in light of Scripture and wisdom that comes through.

Sorry guys, I don't think ANYONE can blame another person (certainly not an author, not a pastor) for "causing them to marry the wrong person" or "destroying" them (in terms of marriage or belief). Josh's willful falling away from the Gospel saddens me, but when any person hears a pastor or reads a book, it is up to THAT individual to make choices, and to take responsibility for those choices.

Thanks so much for your honesty. For me it was the list of "Do's and Don'ts" that made me feel inadequate and further away from God. Finally I decided to leave church, not saying everyone should, but I needed to be uninfluenced and started studying the New Covenant on my own. See in the beginning I was sold out on the unconditional love and safety in the Saviour. Although having good intentions, when churches preach law it becomes a whole legalistic religious organization that robs us of our true identity and freedom that we are supposed to have. What I found is that religion says "Fix yourself and God/we will accept you" while the original Gospel says "Come just as you are and I will give you righteousness/(okayness) as a gift". Religion says "You have to work hard to stay forgiven and right" while the true Gospel says "With a single sacrifice I have made you perfectly accepted and irreversibly forgiven for ever". Religion says "You have to work to get close to God" the Gospel says "You cant get closer to your Father as He is in you and you are in Him". Religion says "God is in love with a future version of you" while the Gospel of Grace says "Dad loves you as you are right now unconditionally and is NEVER GOING TO CHANGE in this irreversibly restored relationship". Religion says "You are not good enough" and the true Gospel of Grace says "You are fully accepted, with a new heart which is righteous, holy and blameless. That's your identity, now live from your heart and be yourself". Religion is a bunch of rules to follow as a prerequisite to acceptance versus the Gospel of Grace providing immediate irreversible acceptance which will produce the "works"/performance over time, but our performance is SECONDARY to the "Work Christ did". This reveals a bit of what I found please see this link for more: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hHysxLx-p8XOeMo.html This is 8 years later, in the mean-time I started a small bible study group where everyone is on the same level and unconditionally accepted, where their opinion is valid and important. God's love.

He's essentially feeling doubts in his worldview and belief system, and his book is what got him on the map as a church leader a long time ago. He's feeling less confident in his ideas and as a result, he feels guilty about having a book published propagating the same ideas in which he no longer has confidence. Personally I think he's going through a crisis most people of any influential social status go through (at least the ones with a conscience), especially as a worship leader. He did the responsible thing, he wasn't sure about some things anymore, so he stepped down. Some people would prefer to keep the status and such. God bless this man.
