Form to Fighting: The Techniques of Eagle Claw Kung Fu -- The Cross Block

Спорт

In this series, we look at the simple but powerful techniques of Eagle Claw Kung Fu or Ying Jow Pai. The Cross Block is the subject of this episode; it's a block designed to stop an especially powerful blow, then allow for an immediate transition into an Eagle Claw catch, lock, and strike. North Sky Kung Fu's students help Sifu Dario Acosta to demonstrate.

Julie, this is Joe. I wrote an email to you from Pittsburgh. Part of your reply was an invitation to view this new video. I thoroughly enjoyed. It covered a thought I frequently had when learning basics ( I used to always think far ahead, instead of practicing what I was just taught : P ). Very well done, and left me with a hope of more. Future luck with everything to you all.

SD to me are those times when those types of techniques are useful (HAPV's). That is not when you're 'already' brawling with the person. It's before he has a chance to turn it into a 'fight' ...if you take my meaning. SD mode and FIGHTING mode are two different animals IMO. If you can't avoid, prevent, deescalate, escape, SD techniques are designed to take the guy out quickly thus avoiding a "fight". But if that doesn't work, you'll find yourself in a brawl very quickly.

You can chase the hands if you wish, good luck with that. I have yet to see a single instance of anyone using a self defense 'technique' in a real situation be it sparring, or a real fight of any kind. I'm talking choreographed "self defense techniques" here. When the shit hits the fan, and its beyond a 'threat' or the old 'finger in your chest' type situation, and the punches and knees are flying....those techniques go out the window.

Makes sense, Jissenkempo. What you are talking about is in the realm of self-defense, where anything goes. Sifu Dario's approach is that you have a fraction of a second to move or react to their move. You better make it count.

IMO if it's already a "fight" meaning a brawl, 'techniques' go out the window and you just have to freestyle. If they open up their center just go in blazing. You fight the man, not his arms. Watch his body not his hands. If you can stay just out of his range he has to take a step to get to you, this is what you're looking for, when he does if you can stay out of the way of(or deflect) his attack, he just closed the gap and you don't have to move in order to hit him. My 2 cents

The other thing I often wondered is, most attackers aren't going to be trained fighters...and to me that's more dangerous. I was wondering how "sloppy attacks" would be handled. Especially crazy hay makers ( I think thats what they call them ), and attacks with TOO MUCH momentum behind them. For example, someone attacks and throws a punch, they miss, but their own uncontrolled momentum brings the rest of their body barreling into you. Maybe a video on those things? I'll be watching. : )

It's actually easier with fighters that are not trained. Part of the training with a qualified Sifu like North Sky helps in all these situations. The Eagle Claw system is circular and avoids the straight on charge. But in all fights there is no guarantees and experienced boxers know how to respect a novice who can do something out of the box.

+Naori Kokorone Thanks for that mysterious email! The Eagle calls to us too. As we say: Lethal and mysterious. Chin na is fascinating, and yes, we have leopard, palm, phoenix eye and more....and of course, the Claw. Thanks for checking in from Japan!

North Sky Kung Fu you're welcome. even though I have a medium build, I'm weak and have to use women's self-defense. Your thoughts?
