Firebirds were Pontiac Camaros and while they put a lot of different motors in early Camaros I’m sure they probably put 6 bangers in some Firebirds. If they did it would be the Pontiac overhead cam 6 . They were pretty much same car. Same body. I put a Pontiac Firebird convertible top on my 67 Camaro. Fit exactly the same. 50s and 60s GM cars a lot of them were the same with different front and rear. LOL My brother back in the late70s owned a 70 or 71 Cutlass 442 with the W30 package. It had the 455 engine in it and was a monster, especially 0-60.It was actually a pass down from another brother who was getting married and buying a Van or Station Wagon or something. My poor mother always had s driveway full of a mixture of cars, trucks, motorcycles etc that she had just plain learned to live with. One day my brother spotted her heading out the door. She said that she was walking to the drug store a block or so away. My brother said he'd drive her and she accepted the ride. For the pure hell of it the moment my mother left the store with curlers or blue rinse or whatever my brother put the Cutlass into a Brake Stand and had the vehicle burning rubber while it cut a loud smoky squirelly donut in front of the drugstore finally sliding up to the curb where my mother was standing stoically. She opened the door and got in and all she could say was "I wish you wouldn't do that!" Years later my mother was in a nursing home after a high fever left her with severe memory loss. She was frozen in a happy state but she didn't know you'd been to visit 5 minutes after you left her. A sister in law of mine who was a nurse dropped in to see "Ma" one day and found her sternly looking out a window that looked down on the parking lot of the Nursing Home. My sister in law said "Ma whats the matter you look really cross". She continued to look down at the parking lot, shook her head and said "I've got to get those boys to do something about all those cars they keep collecting". A little late for Mothers day, but fellas we ought to salute all the long suffering Mothers who put up with our adventures in hot rodding!.

Yes, but some Pontiac cars were all forgotten to say the very least. Because in many ways I've look at plenty of forgotten Pontiac models in both TV and movies as well as several commercials and print ads were now becoming cult classics such as Catalina, Firebird, Trans Am, LeMans, Tempest and more. What I've loved about this legendary car brand and because in my opinion as part of the GM family, Pontiac has been making an wide range of models whenever it's Grand Prix or Firebird/Trans Am and more, there's only one name that simply moves you: Pontiac. You are mostly correct. Corporate always shot down and defunded Pontiac’s high performance programs as soon as they would exceed Corvette performance. The Ram Air V program that would have made the Pontiac V8 at least equal to Chrysler’s Hemi was cancelled when they bolted a set of Ram Air V heads and a single 4bbl on a 400 in a GTO and blew the doors off the aluminum headed tri powered Corvette (the only car allowed to have multiple carburation after 1966). Also the head of Pontiac in the 70s (a corporate yes man inserted after DeLorean) was against the Super Duty 455 said Pontiac should not be building engines such as the SD455. I wonder how much of an influence he had on making its availability only in a very few Firebirds instead of also originally planned offerings in the GTO, the new Grand Am and Grand Prix? Pontiac also was at a disadvantage due to it only being 1 step up from Chevrolet in the corporate hierarchy. Buick was permitted to make the Grand National in the 80s because it was only 1 step below Cadillac.

The 421 has a magic to it for it's racing pedigree with the ugly but fast 63 HD Tempests. For anyone less interested in matching numbers and concourse restoration and more interested about period correct looks and real output - the 428 or 455 is a better base. And they cost way less to buy and restore (though not cheap these days).

(I saw a few on Belgian plates when I was stationed in Germany, they could've come over with an RCAF member, though??) (2) The Firebird Sprint you showed was a Formula 400....but that '66 LeMans 'was' the OHC 'Sprint 6' powered version?? (3) You left out the 1973-74 Super Duty 455 Trans Am/Formula,the 1973-75 Grand Am and the 1971-72 Grand Prix Hurst SSJ? (4) You also forgot about the 1962-63 Super Duty Catalina? (5) What about the one year only '67 Grand Prix and '69 Trans Am convertibles?? The '69 Trans Am conv....you can count those on your hands and still have some fingers left? I think they only made 8 of them.
