usually I use them in my mixes. especially in drumfunk mixes. but only dark evil dnb.. why not..

There's something about the drum work makes this type of d'n'b much more interesting than other types I'm used to (liquid, namely). Any idea if this is related to a particular genre or is this just what oldschool drum 'n' bass sounds like?

This is indeed what oldschool drum and bass sounded like. Basically the precursor of drum and bass, before drum and bass became a thing. More specifically this genre is called, like the title points out, jungle. There's an interesting story about the connection between jungle and drum and bass. Anyhow, if you look for jungle drum and bass or simply jungle you'll be able to find more beats like these! As a side note, if you take this complex drum pattern, turn it up to 11 and take out a bit of the bass you get breakcore! Maybe look it up if you dig these drum breaks.
