My take is it would be extremely hard for Voll to not know about a world saving event 80 years or so after it took place, the more likely explanation is he forgot, because he's actually going senile or has dementia. The part about him joking was Frieren trying to deny that it was happening.

I think it's such a realistic portrayal of dementia, too. Frieren said she was heading to Ende, where the Demon King's castle lies, and that dug up Voll's 80-year-old memories of the last time she had said that to him, and he couldn't distinguish between then and now. I've seen similar reactions from real people with dementia, especially when their ability to form new memories is impaired but their older memories are still largely intact.

I fully agree on that. In the hospital, where I used to work for few years, the doctors had a simple exercise called The Dementia Clock where the patient was asked to draw a clock and current time and they were asked to repeat it through the day to keep a track of not only the time but also whether it's a day or night. Dementia is a really cruel monster awaiting in shadows of our brain.

The thing I love most about this episode is that it's maybe the first time we hear Frieren declare unequivocally that her memories of Himmel and the others are important to her. They're so important that Frieren is offended at the mere implication that they might be forgettable (before she realizes that Voll was asking because he himself had forgotten). Prior to this, Frieren has expressed almost nothing but doubt about her own feelings and those of others. Back in episode 2 or 3, Fern asks her if retracing the heroes' journey is important to her, and she said she didn't know and was going on the journey to figure that out. Even just 2 episodes ago, after spending many sleepless nights scouring the forest for the ring, when Fern asked if she was glad to have it back, the best Frieren could manage was "maybe". So to see her here declaring without a shadow of doubt or equivocation that her memories of Himmel are IMPORTANT to her is such a major moment of character growth for her.

This moment definitely holds a big meaning in the story. She is undergoing massive changes. I've already watched 26 episodes and I'm struggling to watch the last two because I know how long I'll have to wait to see the development of the rest of her journey :(

@@ExpectoRidiculum If it makes you feel any better, I think this season has one of the most satisfying conclusions I've ever seen for a season of any show. But there's no avoiding it, you'll be left with a Frieren-shaped hole in your heart when it's done. (Or you'll become a manga reader.)

@@DarwinAwardWinner that's a relief in a way, I'm glad you've said that ☺ I read a lot of manhwas daily so there's nothing stopping me from checking the manga out, after I finish the show 🙂

This episode and episode 12 are the ones that I absolutely cannot handle, no matter how many times I watch them. The moment Voll says he can't recall his wife anymore just GUTS me - cognitive decline due to age is probably the thing I am most afraid of in life so it hits me in a really personal way. 😭

I know exactly what you mean, I'm afraid. The moment it happens to somebody close to you is when you understand importance of keeping your body and brain healthy in order to live long QUALITY life with ability to remember the past and the closest ones :( This episode really got me by surprise as I wasn't expecting such important topic to be brought up in this anime. I'm thankful to the author for this. You don't see that often in the anime

i love the Voll segment, even tho it's sad, it's beautifully presented, and the fact that a character with 10 minutes of screen time can bring so much emotion is one more testament to how amazingly written this story is. Frieren didn't quite understand that Voll was serious about forgetting his wife, because to her the memories of Himmel are very recent, are pretty much as vivid as your last summer vacation to you, and i suspect that Elves have an amazing memory, just to be able to remember hundreds if not thousands of spells they learnt through their lives. And we've also seen that even 1000 years old memories of Flamme are still very clear in Frieren's mind as well. It ended on a good note tho, with Voll dreaming about his wife, and Frieren changes her parting words to "goodbye" to "see you later", which i believe it means that she thinks he may still have some years left in him now.

8:55 everyone seems to get confused here, but it's not that complicated. Old Man Voll is dealing with dementia, or going senile, or whatever you want to call it. He's getting confused and forgetting things due to his old age. He's literally getting this moment with Frieren confused with their first meeting deades ago. This is one of the sad realizations you have in life when you enjoy talking to a loved one with dementia only to watch them go through moments of confusion. They may even call you the wrong name or repeat what they already said. I've seen this with my own aunt on her death bed when she suddenly referenced something from years ago as if it just happened. And I've seen it with my father who is now suffering from dementia. He will tell me to say hello to my wife even though I've been divorced for years, or he'll talk about his dog that died 15 years ago like he's still around. This is why Voll was strugling to remember his own wife's face. Frieren doesn't correct him because there's no point, and if anything, it might embarrass him.

Hi, yes that's true. At first, I got confused because dementia isn't something that appears in anime often (if any). I thought to myself, are they in the past again? But no. Dementia is a cruel monster. I can relate to your story as well. I've said goodbye to my Grandma in March, in her last moments her eyes weren't looking at me but something/someone else... I'm sorry about what have happened to your aunt but I'm sure your family have taken good care of her and provided her with what she needed the most - love and presence of those that were close to her. I believe that even though the brain suffers from dementia, after the relative passes away he knows that you've tried your best to comfort them and ease the pain and confusion. They're at peace. I don't believe in God per se but after my Grandma died I have stayed in her flat for days sorting out things and I felt warmth and peace. I think she was happy we took such a good care of her and loved her till the end. It's extremely difficult and it could happen to anyone even at younger that 60 age. What's important now is to avoid sugar and look after ourselves, exercise the brain and provide it with important vitamins and minerals :)

2:36 Of course it's possible. Human's life expectancy is around 70 years, but somebody can live over 90, 100 years. That's just the average number
