Spent many a Saturday afternoon at the Old Den back in the early 70s. When I went back for a holiday in 89 I was there again. Millwall were playing Liverpool in a midweek 1st Division match in April. Great night..Liverpool won 2-1. Big crowd.. over 22,000. I've been living in Brisbane, Australia for the last 40 years. Still follow the Lions !!!

Lots of memories but probably the best belongs to my wife. She was eight months' pregnant and we actually sat down (the only time, I'm a considerate bloke) for a game against Ipswich in 1987. She went to the lav at half time and was just sitting down to releive her bladder when a small window above her head opened and a shovel full of horse shit landed at her feet. We were never sure if this was an ancient fertility rite or just an assumption that no sane woman would ever use the karzi where they dumped the crap from the police horses. We won 2-0.

Went there as a 16 year old with Chelsea in 1976. A right eye opener. Was glad to get home. Went in a pre season friendly too in 1980 which was almost as bad. Think it just shades Upton Park as the worst place to go as an away fan in those days.

Was there that day, with a handful of Mitcham Chelsea, we stood in the halfway, and I kept my trap shut. I remember seeing the main Chelsea mob surrounded behind the goal to our left. A certain Chelsea face of the time was well up for it tho. Old bill formed a thin blue line. Before the game, Millwall properly steamed into Chelsea at the train station. Another time, I went to Millwall Wolves, and only 1 Wolves fan turned up, he jumped up when Wolves hit the bar, and someone ran across the pitch and gave him a dig. All a long time ago now brother

i was there day, just turned 13 and went with couple mates, got the 21 bus from ferrier estate othher side of lewisham into new cross,it wasn;t the best of days for you lot but for us it was great! the 3-0 win was unreal and what went on in the ground was mad,in them days there was no fences and you could walk all round the ground back then, didnt need tickets, just turned up and payed at turnstile,it was 4 bob to get in(22p) we started off in iderton rd end, there was millwall everywhere and i dont remember your lot being mobbed up in that end or singing but more spread about,as for the cold blow lane end it was just going off it seemed,i give chelsea there due mark, there the only club in my time going millwall thats had a go at taking CBL,,what i can remember was a first mob of your lot got into cold blow,it was kicking off and you lot were getting abit off hiding and splitting up,so loads of you lot ended up running onto the pitch. towards the ilderton road but when you got there you had millwall all in that end,i all ways remember i was stood at back of stand and there was woman about 25 yr old chelsea fan and she wad screaming/sobbing her eyes out with all what was going on and back up the cold blow lane it all went again, another firm of your boys got into the cbl, same thing again we were just to strong for your lot that day,i dont remember chelsea being run onto the pitch that time but i think like the first go you got all split up as mob,but like i said fair play to your lot that day and giving it a go,......at least at stamford bridge you got a draw and we ended up being put onto the pitch at the shed!

Located on Cold Blow Lane, and as it was in a kind of small valley when conditions were right there could be a sharp icy wind blowing right across the pitch, something the Millwall players knew exactly how to exploit to their advantage. I am prepared to swear that back in the day when you could just turn up and pay at the gate at almost any football league match in London, I was standing on the terrace behind the goal, directly behind Keith Weller, who was standing practically on the goal line a few yards from the goal itself, he jumped up for a cross (or corner kick)and headed the ball forward into the wind, which was gusting so hard that it turned the ball back to score a goal.

I remember turning up at the old den and paying half a crown 2s/6d (12and a half new pence post decimal) at the turnstiles not a prawn sandwich or skinny latte in sight just loads of meat pies and bovril back then football was a working class game with working class fans not like today's footie fans with their camera phones and silly designer logos politely sipping machines and minding their language 😂

I miss those days. Always knew when it was going to be rough when the police at these places had motor bike helmets instead of the flat peaked caps. That was always a warning that it was gong to be rough!!!!

Great coverage & story of the old Den 👍 1st went there in Oct 1968, 14500 fans that day, made more noise than the 63000 at Arsenal a few weeks earlier v Man Utd. Millwall is still a working man/woman club no airs or graces, new stadium but same intimidating atmosphere. Been to many of the old closed stadiums & am ticking off the New ones.

Extraordinary contrast between those halcyon days from my debut in 1961/62 to that last day in 1993 and NOW.,and I missed 6 Home matches and went to 85 different grounds and around 1,770 matches in total(including NON -Millwall games). ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. Even the serried ranks of 5,000 made a real noise and with nearly everyone standing on top of the pitch, including half the Away End with their fans tucked into a corner it was THE most intimidating place that I went to with Upton Park not far behind. NOW> In our ALL SEATER(ASS) SANITISED, SOULLESS,(relatively) SILENT Ground with openings at each corner for the noise to escape.,NO COMPARISON though the toilets are better now.😁

Villa fan here, i went to the old Den twice in the 70's, i remember this guy saying when we get to the ground, everyone stick together. We did not have to wait to get to the ground, there was around 2,000 Millwall lunatics waiting outside the station for us, well the police came along and managed to removed them, and escorted us to the ground. This was first visit to Millwall i was only 17, when we got in the ground, i thought ,i wish i would have stayed at home, it was absolutely frightening, it did not matter where you was in the ground there was Millwall lunatics everywhere. I kept thinking what are we going to do after the game, how are we going to get to the train station, but we managed to get there with a police escort, with Millwall fans running along side ,giving us the i going to cut you up sign. I even went there the next year, i thought am i going crazy, but it was a bit better this time ,because we could not even get out off the station, because of the thousands of Millwall nutters outside to welcome us. But when i look back now, i think i am glad i went, it is something i will never forget. I have never been to the new Den, but it looks a bit lame, to the Old Den, i see you still get the old nutters in there 50' and 60.s , at the games, i wonder how many off them were,on the cold blown lane end in the 70's.

Are you trying to make a 68-year-old fan cry because you're almost succeeding? lol it was OUR shit hole and opponents hated it. The atmosphere when playing a significant match under Floodlights was described by Kevin McCarthy, Top Football Writer as better than Barcelona's and was very intimidating where you had fans, literally, by the pitch on all 4 sides. Wonderful, memorable days from seeing Millwall win an F A Cup Replay 2/0 against Johnny Haynes and Top Tier team: Fulham in front of 31,000. Could not get a ticket in The Cup in 168 when 41,000 saw us draw 0/0 with Spurs and 73,000 turned up at White Hart Lane and by all reports 15,000 were locked outside. Went there so many times from late 60's to late 80's , as a youngsters my dad and uncles took me there and bunked us over the wall to the right of the turnstiles , must been at over 50 games there, was the most fiercest fans at that time, The Den was a Fortress and Cauldron if Noise Millwall Forever 💙

I went to every home game that season with my uncle at the old den as a 12 year old. To say it was eye opener was a under statement that season has never left me as a Millwall fan. I would do anything to go back to them days now but times move on unfortunately. 😢 🦁

Worrow Lee: Baggies fan here. You say it was a shithole, BUT I found when I travelled in the 1970's that grounds that "looked" shitholes were in fact the best as regards home support.

One of the most intimidating grounds as well.

All my family went to the old den i was 7 years old went to ilderton school often bunked in over the railway lines with my mates best days of my life
There will be very few people who went to the Den and have forgotten it. Either they would have been too young to register a single visit, or they will have some sort of dementia. For the rest of us it remains unforgettable.

Missed 6 games from 1961/62 to the closure in 1993 and miss it every match.

I live near Middlesbrough but over the other side of the river in County Durham.
In the last game at The Den against Bristol Rovers, they must have got through about 30 balls as whenever they were hoofed into the crowd, they never returned. There was a significant wait towards the end of the match when someone must have been sent off to get some more from the wherever they stored them.
