Forgiveness After Medical Malpractice & Amputation

Forgiving someone who's hurt you is hard, especially if it was someone you went to for help, like a doctor. How can you forgive a doctor for medical malpractice, especially if it led to amputation? Today I'll share how I forgave the doctor who set me on the road to amputation.

Hi Stephanina. Ever since I started watching your channel a few months ago (I was looking for peg leg info 🙂), I have been extremely impressed by who you are as a person and how you've approached your amputation. So when I saw your video today, I found your comments to be completely in line with your character. And I couldn't agree with you more. Forgiveness is really, really hard, especially when it leaves such a permanent mark on your body. But at this point being bitter cannot help anyone. I share your pragmatic approach to life. I have lots of things to deal with right now, so anger and bitterness will just hold me back, and cause even more grief to those around me. I come at my amputation with a Christian worldview, but you don't have to be a Christian to be a forgiving person. Your comment that your doctor is still fundamentally a human being and that all humans mess things up is good advice for us all. One difference between our situations is that my amputation (RKBA) is completely my own fault. I got an infection and delayed seeking medical help, resulting in osteomyelitis (bone infection) that could not be fixed. I felt terribly guilty about my failure to take care of myself. I apologized over and over again to my wife and kids, telling them that it's my job to take care of them, not the other way around. But my wife has been extremely understanding and takes far better care of me than I deserve. And our children and grandchildren have been very supportive as well. But God has been with us throughout, and I believe that there is a greater purpose in everything. By telling my story, I hope that at minimum more people will get checked for diabetes so that they might prevent the kind of troubles that amputation causes. Please let me finish by sharing a big "thank you" to you for everything that you do on this channel. You are on of my "go to" content creators for everything amputation. That includes your exhaustive analysis on how to function with a peg leg. 🙂 At the risk of sounding too much like a dad, I'm really proud of you for making this video. We need more of your kind of attitude in society, for then it would then be a far better place. God bless you and that lovely family of yours, and I so look forward to more of your videos.

This may be the hardest component of telling others what happened. They identify with the loss and anger of the moment when I have traveled far beyond that time and just want to plow forward with the best possible life now. I can’t change any of those events: unlucky accident, bad doctor, and complications. I can choose what I do now.

Because I’m diabetic I lost my right foot 10 years ago and I lost half of my left foot a year and a half ago. I have never blamed anyone or anything for it. It’s just life changes and I have to live with it. I’m still able to walk around in short distances and ride a electronic scooter the rest of the time. I still have a job. My wife was good support until she passed away about almost two years ago. Now I have my adult son and daughter in law, as well as my daughter as a good support group. Happy Easter and many more to come 😎

I love your analogy of time being like a river that slowly washes away the grime. That's a beautiful way of putting it, and so true, too. All we have to do is loosen our grip just a little.

I admire your dedication to help others. You have a big heart and it is comforting. I’m am an amputee. October 11 of last year. My amputation was due to my doctors mistake. I have gone several years with pain in my ankle. 10 surgeries in 9 years. I continued to see the same surgeon. I realized that he really had my best interest in mind. So many people thought I was crazy to continue with him. Truth be told he is a person like all of us. You hit the nail on the head! People make mistakes. I chose to live with my life as a happy, blessed person. Thank you so much for your support and wisdom. Hug your kids for me! I’m sure they help you with everything! I’m 67 4 kids 7 grandkids! Life is magical!

I love hearing your experience! It sounds similar to mine. I was never angry with my surgeon. I just felt like he made a mistake then was in over his head trying to deal with the result. Not being angry has made all the difference. Life is a blessing, regardless of the number of limbs we have.

You can't stay angry at the situation that put you in the situation. Mine was a crush injury on the foot. Mind you the pain had been in the foot for over 25 years before. I just shrugged and carried on. I am not angry at the resident that caused it. He was angry at the situation they was in. Happy Easter. Be well.

Thanks for sharing, Paul! I've noticed that a lot of times, the amputee is less angry about how things turn out than everyone else. Not sure why that is, but I'm glad that you're able to see things as they are and make the best of it. Happy Easter!
