FORGING PUNCHES from a COIL SPRING + HEAT TREATING OIL TANK - Blacksmithing Ep. 10

Ойын-сауық

The universe is a mean jerk.
In this vid, I take you along as I try to make two punches - a slot punch, and a round punch. I also struggle to make a new quench tank to use for heat treating the new punches.
Heat Treating, forging, grinding, and a whole lot of fun.

great job ( I read your comment on the striking end) I like your style, making the best of what ya got- now off to see some more of your video offerings

ONLY QUENCH THE WORKING END/tip of your punches. I made the mistake of heating and quenching the whole piece(s) in this video. This makes the striking ends too hard. To fix this I had to normalize the striking end while keeping the working end cool. Also, sorry about the over exposure. That will be fixed in future videos. :)

I’ve got a ton of coil spring to make into punches I haven’t gotten around it. They look good !

Todd LeShane well I finally got around to it lol. They work well. I need some better tongs for holding coil springs though ha

Todd LeShane I’ve punched the hole for all my tongs! I’m not a fan of drilling. It takes too long and can make the reigns weak. I like to punch holes over drill when ever it’s possible. :) I’ve got 4’ of 3/4” round mild steel and I’m gonna make a lot of tongs haha. I will be fire welding reigns on because it’s easy and in no way do I want to draw out that much steel into reigns haha

@@JustinTopp That's the way to go. In the absence of some type of power forging, I'll be welding my future reigns haha.

What gauge sheet was that I got the same welder but I blow holes in the thin stuff I was wondering what you had that beast set to on the feed speed as well I need to make a tank that's tall for longer blades

I believe that was 20 or 22 guage sheet. Was definitely on the thin side for that welder. Feed speed was a little under 50 % on lowest power settings IIRC. I found the big "trick" to welding thin sheet with that thing is to hold the gun at an extreme angle so that the wire is being fed straight into the bead, and not the actual sheet (best shown @ 6:18 in this video). All the while welding in bursts so that the metal has time to cool. Good luck! Hope this helps.

Lose the music. If I wanted to listen to music instead of what yu are doing I would just listen to my I-tunes. Very irritating

Truly appreciate the suggestion. Good to hear different opinions. This is the style of video I’ve decided to make. If you want to watch a video on forging punches without music, you can watch one on KZread.
