Dadgummit, Mr. Hoffman. Here I was just a wonderin' if polishing the leading edges of that there punch would lengthen it's functional life and here you are, at the end, polishing it! Ain't it amazing how great minds think alike.

Nice! I love H-13 for tools. I only started using recently, but it works great with my press.

Can't tell you how many matchbooks I've gone through for the sole reason of flicking them as you did when lighting the forge. It is also a "blast" placing a book of matches on a golf ball and smashing it. Yeah... I grew-up without technology and my siblings stole the rock and the stick, so I was bored.

What dimensions are you working to? I am new to blacksmithing. Is there a rule of thumb for dimensions on a hammer eye punch/drift? I would like to start making all my own tools but am not sure if there is a spec for these or not. Any info would be great. Thanks.

Your post vise looks pretty massive; perhaps comparable to mine, which is 110 lbs. And how do you decide which one of your cool anvils you'll use for a given job? I would lose time through indecision.

You want it a bit flat on the end so it's not slitting a hole, but punching out a slug from the eye...that way it's much easier for it o receive your drift...if you slit the eye, you need a very skinny drift and run the risk of riveting your drift into the head of the hammer if you don't get it all the way through on one heat.

Looks good but why? Why not a handled one? They are much safer and accurate because you can see both planes of lvl and square much easier. Plus you don't worry about ambient heat burning your r hand while holding the punch...nor mistrikes breaking your hand.
