    Do you like the hot bluing on the letter opener? You might see me use this technique in upcoming builds. Please checkout the links in the description and help support the Millikan's efforts!

    Hot bluing is awesome. Never heard of it before this. I’m not a knife maker but I could see cool uses for it with the general blacksmith stuff I do. Is there an affiliate like for the stuff you used to do it in the description? I read through but I don’t think I’m seeing that - I could just be dumb though. Also, is that kerosene your dipping the billet in before the forge? If not what it is and what’s the reason? Thanks for the videos!

    @@midknightforge7446 I should have mentioned it, it’s called NitreBlue from Brownells. You can’t buy it on Amazon, I had to order it directly from Brownells. The liquid is kerosene and it burns off when the billet goes into the forge and so does the oxygen to reduce scaling. Thanks for watching!

    What tips do you have for young blacksmiths such as my self beyond your triple t Thursday videos

  • @TyrellKnifeworks

    @TyrellKnifeworks

    @@coltgross6943 Practice by making things like leaf pendants, hearts, icicle Christmas ornaments, anything like that so you can start learning hammer control. If you want to be a blacksmith (as opposed to a Bladesmith), this is where I suggest you start. Even if you want to be a Bladesmith, it’s good to learn that first. Something I should have said in my last Triple-T. When I was learning, I made some Christmas gifts for people, learned on some mild steel and made square tapers and then twisted them and formed hearts. I made shepherd hooks. Lots of things before I tried knives. I hope that helps.

    The bluing turns beautifuly- photographs doesn't show it, but there was few moments on a video where the real colour is visible. Maybe I'm wrong but does this solution is only for increasing dencity of the liquid- just to make it boil in higher temperature? In general if you tempure the blade in 600F - it will turn blue anyway.. I don't know this method- just asking cause it interested me. Great video and project Man!

    It's heartwarming what you and your wife do. To keep it going past the internet exposure, you should apply as a nonprofit (easy form). Then you could put another mailbox in other neighborhoods. Everything would be a tax write off for your donators and your 'seasonal efforts fund'.

    beautiful work. I use Acrylic to make pens all the time. A very nice material to get a smooth shiny polish on. The only change I might have made to this build would have been to keep the spacer as part of the blade - eliminate the ridge between the blade and spacer, as well as carry the etching lines in a continuous pattern.

  • @TyrellKnifeworks

    @TyrellKnifeworks

    Yeah, I originally was going to put another material between the spacer and the blade but decided against it. The etching was supposed to match up but I somehow got the spacer twisted during glueup. 😕

    @@TyrellKnifeworks Oh no, it definitely came out great as is! Hells to-the-yes I forgot about Friday!! You tricked me with your Where's Waldo machete that you said was on the table of awesomeness at the Blade Show. You're an incredible guy for what you are doing for Blade Makers in training is just fantastic, considering you may have had to jump into the deep end at the beginning of your career. Well look at where you're now, and the crap ton of insight you've accumulated over the years. It's a priceless thing to pass on that knowledge. How does that thing go: give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but teach a man to fish and you've fed him for a lifetime......but I know there are no fish in your shop......right?? I really liked the way it looked after the oil dip hardening, 10:16 straw and black. I wonder if you could use the oven to turn the lighter parts a straw color after etching. also wonder if you could get a cool pattern if you turned a piece in the lathe then flattened it.

    Thanks so much, Stephen! It depends on the knife and edge geometry really. If it’s a chopper then I might only take it to 20 thousands. A kitchen knife will be almost sharp. Something like this bowie was around 0.005-0.007”. I don’t want the secondary bevel to be to big. Thanks!
