FORGED vs CAST Motorcycle Wheels

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, we'll look at the differences between forged and cast motorcycle wheels (rims) and why forged rims can make your motorcycle quicker, better handling, better braking and also give you a smoother ride.
We'll be taking a close look at a forged motorcycle rim made by MOS Motor and discussing the benefits of using a lighter and stronger wheel versus the original cast rim.
Cast wheels (rims) are made by pouring melted aluminum into a mold, which can create weaknesses and result in a heavier wheel. On the other hand, forged wheels are made by heating a chunk of aluminum and shaping it with a mill, making both a lighter and a stronger wheel. It's an important distinction that has a big impact on your riding experience.
We'll explore the concepts of unsprung mass and inertia, and I'll explain how reducing unsprung weight can give your motorcycle or Vespa a performance increase in a number of ways. We'll also be taking a close look at the quality of the fit and finish of the MOS Motor forged wheels, as well as the installation process.
To demonstrate the improved acceleration, braking, and cornering capabilities of the forged wheels, I'll be taking my Vespa GTS for a spin with the MOS Motor forged wheels. I'll also be taking another identical Vespa GTS out with the original rims. You'll get to see first-hand how the two wheels perform on the road.

I tried these wheels and noticed only a very slight improvement on the track and nothing on the street, just to be sure we swapped out a friend's bike with these wheels and he came to the same conclusion, apart from being a little lighter and easier to take of and on for the very large expense not worth it, your much better off with engine mods.

Thank you for bringing attention to the problems of Unsprung Weight. When i see wheels on trucks getting larger each year, i suspect the owners know nothing about unsprung weight problems. My 2003 Chevy Suburban K2500 had factory 16 inch rims. Now I see 20 inches or larger on Suburbans and pickup trucks. Side note - like the vlogger, I'm very fond of my Suzuki M50. It's a great motorcycle up to 65 mph / 105 kph. It's a lot more fun around town than my Victory Cross Roads Classic, which excells on the superhighways.

Hey Samuel, you're right. Big trend in trucks and SUVS towards bigger rims which add more weight, more costs, and no benefits other than aesthetics. Even worse is even they increase rim size to the loss of sidewall height, as sidewall plays a role in helping the truck/SUV suspension... But that's a whole other video lol.. PS: I will always have a warm place in my heart for a Boulevard M50. Thanks for stopping by!

I really love my 2005 M50 also (only has 35,000k's). Thinking about getting different handlebars and seat though. Last summer got up to 115/120 km/ph on 401 & 115. Woohoo freedom. Ride safe. Michele

LOL, I *just* went through this on my truck... my new tires are 11lbs heaver EACH, versus the stockers. I found the extra weight softens bumps [but I also have 22" wheels on it - factory option], but the tires are different, so like you said, it's not quite apples to apples. Great breakdown of the differences - and thank heavens, someone else knows about unsprung weight!

@@YouMotorcycle IIRC, they were 37 or 38lbs per tire [285/45/22] versus 48 or 49lbs for the new ones. I really should do a video about my whole truck debacle I had in March. Good things came of it, but it was frustrating as all get-out at the time.

I am watching relative to high end sportbikes ....I cant imagine it would be worth it for a Vespa? Not to knock scooters but owners of scooters intentionally are alread signing up for particualry low performance and s my question is really why bother? Well UNLESS there is race series for scooters that have to be based on stock actual scooters THEN one might look for every every edge one could but otherwise trying to mod scooters for better performance? The practical thing is to just buy a motorcycle...I mean unless it is really important to ride a scooter?? Like a social scooter club thing? I can understand stuff like that...hey I am in a miata club lol

@@dougiequick1 your point is totally valid but yes there are TONS of scooter racing events around the world. Don't forget, in most of the planet outside of North America, scooters are more popular than motorcycles. Having ridden both my motorcycle and a rented scooter in Rome when I was riding across Italy, the scooter was definitely more convenient

I understand. My father, grand parents, great grandparents, and a friend of mine are all there. It's a coming together place for the community here where people meet up to jog, walk with their babies in baby strollers, take the dogs out for a good walk, etc. The alternative is riding over an hour one way to get anywhere near the curved roads, leaving me no way of doing a proper back to back comparison of two bikes.
