I love Doug's excitement when he realized he straightened the blade again 😂 wholesome
I think they should say he lost only because of the tip of the sword. Yes, it bended, but then it fixed itself. Not many swords can do that. Really impressive
@sirromanov3038

But repeated bending like that puts stress on the metal, and eventually if you do it enough times, it'll just snap.

Swords should bend but comeback true not bend and stay bent
"It will straight"
Knew it was over as soon as dude was only quenching 80% of what he needed to quench. Knew it would pick up a bend.
Everyone complaining about the strength test doesn't seem to know that each round has very specific specifications for the weapon for testing purposes. Each weapon struck through all three plates, but only one was long enough to reach the floor as well, causing the bend, in a test designed to test the blade's ability to stay functional under stress. Yes, it's impressive that boar sword could puncture so deep, but it also means that, while the blade was good, it likely was a bit longer than his competitors, resulting in this issue. Were the blade an inch shorter, he might have actually won, even with the partial heat treat.
C'mon!! This guys Sword was hiting solid ground!! every iron would have flattened.... i totally disagree with the verdict!

They should both be very proud, this is probably the most complicated blade they have featured on this show. (Tell me the other ones they have)
"Hey bro, let me borrow your forge." I'm questioning my friendships now.
Isaac lost but i'm still impressed by the quality of his heat treat/quench even though he couldn't do it for the whole blade because of his forge size. I have to say he made some great spring steel here... If he had a big enough forge to heat treat the whole blade, He would have easily won... His blade was extremely sharp even after the strenght test, it bends extremely well and just to say in case you didn't notice, his blade hit the bottom of the strenght test and it still very well bent, i'm surprised it didn't break or get criticaly damaged here...
Isaac is a good dude. Smiled the whole way through.
I love the way Doug said he straightened the blade, but if it wasn't bent from the brick in the strength test, it may have bent on the skin.

I always thought that for the final they should give the contestants the tests and let them make a fitting blade to perform the best in the tests, test the smiths themselves

The flex of the second blade was so impressive, but that shows his weakness
There was something about Johnathan’s style that yelled MARINE.....absolutely awesome competition here and I respect you 100 %
This was so unfair during the strenght test. I mean, Isaacs weapon hit the ground repeatedly and thats why it took the bend. If the other weapon came throught that sheet metal as easily as his, then it would be bent aswell.
@judgedredd2039
4 жыл бұрын
I doubt that. Issacs blade bent where his heat treat stop. While watching him make the blade and his comments while heat treating I figured if the blade was going to fail that would be where and well it did fail at that point just enough to bend. Now to Isaacs credit I was expecting if it was to fail that it would snap at that point but all it go was a bend which exceeded my expectations. Added not is that hitting and stabbing the dear hide was enough to bend the blade again, true it bent it back but it still ben which show it was soft and the poor blade.
@Christakisss13

8:57 Never seen a man so happy hahah!!!
I just watch this video for doug's commentry when he says that it will keeeel
Seems a bit unfair to me that they judged Isaac for losing the tip. That's because his sword went trought ALL THREE STEEL SHEETS and stabbed several times into the brick (4 times out of 5 hits you can see sparks from hitting the bottom) . Maybe he would have still lost because of the warp, but don't know, I didn't like they did not consider that.
@myrongaines6022

Even then, his blade only bent on the final thrust. If it didn't slam into the brick multiple times before that, it probably wouldn't have bent like it did.

right off the bat I could tell that he had some kind of military background lol
Have an academic background in History (with a focus on pre-modern periods) so this has always bugged me: the famous weapon makers in past have always tried to find ways to keep the cutting edge hardened whilst keeping the core softer - whether this is folding carbon steel over iron (e.g. Ulfbert swords & Katanas) or finding ways to affect the grain structure (e.g. wootz steel) - to get a sharp edge without compromising the resilience. Why are modern smiths so obsessed with getting everything hardened? Doesn't that result in a sharper but more brittle weapon? Can an actual smith enlighten me?
@ledlylknives3924
2 жыл бұрын
There’s a lot that happens to the blades that isn’t shown. The tempering cycle (heating the blade after the quench to specific temp) is what allows the steel to stay sharp while at the same time have flexibility to it.
@JimIBobIJones
2 жыл бұрын
@Bruce Wayne I don't think that's true when it comes to modern smiths. Industry, yes, clearly so - industrial super steel has far surpassed historical weapon steel. But the modern steels (i.e. tool steels) weapon smiths are using aren't superior to crucible steels and, in the case of true Damascus/wootz, inferior.
@JimIBobIJones
2 жыл бұрын
@Bruce Wayne The method isn't necessary for Wootz and Damascus - you can study the metallurgy from the steel structure. The crystal lattice structures and the qualities (combining both hardness and flexibility) puts it on par with modern so called "super steels". Various methods have also successfully replicated these steels, as proven by microscopic study of the metallurgical structures that is distinctive these types of steels. But it is hard to determine which of these was the actual method used historically.
