Forged Bottle Opener, Hammer, Hatchet: Triple Build!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Recently we had the opportunity to learn forging techniques as well as Power Hammer tips and tricks from the amazingly talented Brent Bailey at an event in Montana. When I got back, it was finishing/handling time. This build was suggested/powered by my Patreon crew. Thanks all o' ye'!
P.S. He's back...

Brett McAfee just wondering... what was the biggest challenge for you when you were learning at the smithing workshop? Was is challenging? You seemed to breeze through it. Had you done anything like it in the past?
@skullandspade
6 жыл бұрын
Biggest challenge is getting over the "this looks extremely difficult and I'll feel like an idiot when I screw up" phase. I had taken a few classes in the years before youtubery stuff, and watched tons and tons of videos. #notaprofessional but I took the time to research a lot before hand, and honestly it comes down to just getting to it. I have countless mistakes I learned from in the beginning, but I can really tell how far we've come in the last year or so. I did the "Shadow Axe" about a year ago...I thought it was a big achievement to refinish a head and handle it...and now here we are.
@DanGamble

Brett McAfee good food for thought. I often freeze before trying something new. I really should have figured that bit out by now. Yeah. Just do it. I appreciate you taking the time to respond in such detail. Thank you.

That was an amazing opportunity to take that class. It’s amazing how much more work you can get done with a power hammer. They can really move a lot of metal. If the head would have flown off that hammer on me, it would have gone straight for the camera. You are a lucky man. As always. Amazing video.
@skullandspade
6 жыл бұрын
Lucky indeed on that mishap. And yeah, they best part about learning the big hammers is knowing that this all CAN be done without that equipment (with time and elbow grease) but man can they move steel! Thanks as always Chad, 3 weeks till MC!

You helped him find his way! Thank you brother!
Really nice cliffhanger you have there! The tools came out great, have to say the bottle opener is still my favorite of the bunch. You know what's funny? Every video I've seen where someone makes a handle for a hammer/axe/whatever, they ALWAYS show the wooden wedge, then driving in the wooden wedge, then only (what I assume is) the metal being driven down. I believe in the whole of KZread there is not one video where you see the metal wedge as a whole 😆
@skullandspade
6 жыл бұрын
Hahahah, that’s super weird and I’ve never noticed that before?! The metal wedges are just simple and maybe since we show the wood it seems redundant? I’ll make a video dedicated to the metal wedge! ; )
@harlem1011

Brett McAfee yeah I figured that's the only reason why it's always done this way. Just a strange coincidence. Your metal wedge video will be off the hook as you're probably the first on yt haha!

Very nice video. I should really invest in a forge ... 🤔
@skullandspade

Those forges in the video are made out of some pipe fittings and old Propane tanks lined with kale wool. There are some very cost effective ways of building one. Make it so!
Very cool you should make cool sheath for the hatchet.

Triple whammy pal. The two tone handle compliments the axe fantastic. How long did the bottle opener take to forge?
@skullandspade
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you MG. The bottle opener (if done with less material, as I was mostly just experimenting) would take around an hour or two iffin you're not too keen on a super finished polish.

@skullandspade

"easy" is a relative term. Controlling your head and a few hours of beating metal get shown as 2 minutes on camera...but for the most part, it aint astrophysics. Also, keep us posted on you workshop, excited to see what you do with it!

Brett McAfee, I was curious about the weight of the cross peen hammer you made in Montana not so much the power hammer. Though I just checked and saw Jimmy got it working which is really cool. I took a beginning blacksmithing class back in January so I’m interested in what other rookies are doing. Your bottle opener is much cooler than the one I made that’s for sure.
