Forest Man

Since the 1970's Majuli islander Jadav Payeng has been planting trees in order to save his island. To date he has single handedly planted a forest larger than Central Park NYC. His forest has transformed what was once a barren wasteland, into a lush oasis.
Humble yet passionate and philosophical about his work. Payeng takes us on a journey into his incredible forest.

@MJK A. Nobel Prize would mean nothing to him. I would ask what he needs to help him plant more trees. Does he need tools or seed or seedling trees. Is there a tree he wants but does not have? I would ask if I could bring a group of children so that he could teach them how to plant trees. If you sent him 100 children and only one listened, then there would another forest in 50 years. Perhaps two or three children would listen. Planting seeds of wisdom is as important as planting trees. That is how to get a thousand trees planted.

Truly inspiring. I myself have planted many trees in the mountains. Caring about nature goes across borders. It is something genuine and good in every culture of the world. Big hug from Portugal.

@@ViriatoII Great! And I'm sure you will agree with me that it is very important to plant only indigenous trees, not trees from other parts of the world. In my part of the world "people" had planted trees that look ugly and destroy the indigenous plants with shade (sunlight starvation), acidic leaves dropping on the ground, and aggressive seed growth. These non-indigenous trees look truly "alien" and ugly because they did not evolve there ... they take over and destroy the beauty of the once-amazing landscapes ... turning it into a crappy Disney World of mixed-up trees, rather than the perfect tapestry of colors and textures that is the earth when it is left the way it was.

@@ce7857 Yes, completely true! If you met me in person you would see that I'm always talking about invasive species, my country is full of invasive Australian trees, it's terrible!!! We don't even have Autumn colors anymore, and fires kill dozens every year, besides destroying soils, biodiversity and even rivers :( I became a biologist and now I go even further: Just planting blindly native species can be problematic, as you should respect regional genetic richness. So I have mixed feelings about "industrial" native replantations, as they can bring seeds from 200-1000 kilometers distance, bringing genetic adaptations to wrong conditions. The best solution is these random guys that pick seeds up and plant them closeby, like in this documentary. Cheers!

Every problem you will face in live, you will learn from it and grow by it. You will learn, because that is what growing looks like. I hope you will find a friendly girl, who has the same dream like you. Together you will have more strength to fight together for a better world for animals, trees, plants, oceans, rivers and humans. But be carefull with humans. Some will let you grow and inspire you. But some will try to rob your faith in you. Be strong, vulnerable, a deep thinker, forget your ego. Be you. Do never forget your dream, your purpose in your life path. One day, your children will be happy to have a dad like you. The animals will love you too and they will live in your dreams. The trees, the water, the plants, will florish and remember the life you protected. I do not believe in any god. But i believe in you, little boy... who will be a friendly man with a heart in the right place. Kind regards from belgium and be carefull to protect you allways. Stay healthy and well. Now I don't believe it'll last or have any significant impact because its too good to last when surrounded by amoral opportunists, the source of all Paridises lost throughout history, to date, every single one, all the time, no matter what, . . .

@@marciaegertlaporte8940 Right you are! There have to be environmental land bridges available to the site or, for example, the plants and animals, water and soil treatment, etc., have to be artificially physically transported and thats not the idea here. The process requires natural priorities be established first and kept in place, step-by-step at a pace set by the environment, not the logistical capabilities and knowledge of random humans coincidentally located and willing. But ultimately and most crucial is complete control of the site throughout the process and THAT missing resource (land control, property) is what makes or breaks the entire effort, anywhere, any how.

Planting a forest = dude. Breaking a Mountain = not a dude. Building a road out of plastic = not a dude. There is a big difference between a Man whom assists nature in regreening a destroyed area of this beautiful Earth and a person whom destroys a part of it or a person whom, without meaning harm, covers it in a toxic material that takes 10000 years to spontaneously biodegrade. Those plastics will break down into micro plastics that cannot be dealt with by friction and the effects of UV rays amongst other unintended consequences. The mans forest on the other hand will grow and in death support it’s own life and the lives of all whom dwell within, ad infinitum.

When I was a kid, the local Hardware store was giving seedlings away on Arbor Day. I got one and planted it out in the yard where I lived. It was a tiny Blue Spruce, about six inches high. I can't believe that was thirty five years ago. As time went along, I didn't think much about the tree. My Mother has since passed and now someone else lives there in the house with the big Spruce. Every now and then I drive through the old neighborhood and it's surprising to see how big the tree has got. When I see it, I get a memory burst in my head of the young me planting that tiny thing and it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Jadav Payeng must get a thousand warm fuzzy feelings every day. It was frustrating watching him getting awards, when I know a guy like that doesn't want trophies. A guy like him, wants you to plant some fucking trees. If you think what he has done is great, have him cut the ribbon on the new tree planting project.

Children, now that is a superhero you should be following. That is a superhero whose comic books you should be ready. We all come from very different backgrounds; we all share our own unique stories. This man example should serve as a reminder that EACH and every one of us can and will make a difference! You might not have access to untouched land/island/ private backyard. BUT you do have access to roads, you do have access to streets, you do have access to parks, and even garden… and if you go a bit further out of your comfort zone, you will find plenty of barren “spots” Hey throw a seed :), plant a tiny bush or a plant, or even a tree… Hey you could even play Ninja, and even pretend as if no one saw you do it. Crazy idea right? But it will make a difference! And the difference is coming from you! And by the way, seeds are so cheap! May be there is a street you walk ever day, and it has a few barren spot. Wouldn’t it be nice to throw a few flowering seeds and watch that spot change after a few months??? I have a little over half an acre of land. I have a pick, I even have a shovel. And I am throwing seeds where I want the place to change. The most important thing is to be patient!

+adnan tariq Yes, very true. When we bought our house, we got rid of the lawn and planted trees everywhere. Now we have a mini forest with lost of shade. There is no need for aircon as the trees keep the house cool enough, so that saves energy and CO2 emissions. And the beauty of living with a canopy of trees! Since then, we have planted a tree whenever we can, even in the smallest courtyard garden. My husband is thinking of buying some land that you cannot build on to just plant trees. That could be very nice, and we could go and camp there sometime.
