Forensic Archeologists Find The Largest Medieval Mass Grave Ever Found | Medieval Dead | Unearthed

In 1905, a large grave was discovered outside the old town of Visby, believed to be the site of Gotlanders' last stand against the invaders. The mass grave, containing bodies in armor, provides a rare and valuable glimpse into medieval warfare and the lives of those who fought. The Visby Collection of armor is highlighted, showcasing a range of armor worn in battle during the 1300s. The study of skeletons reveals evidence of trauma and injuries sustained in the medieval battle, with a focus on wounds to the lower legs. Ongoing osteological work aims to reconstruct the lives of individuals buried in the mass grave, providing insights into their height, stature, and how they lived and died.

Very sad and tragic that so many were buried in such a way that their loved ones never knew where they were.

As per usual we have the 'merchants', those in power, bishops, men of the clergy, don't give a toss about the people that made them rich. Still to this day we have those in power sending people to battle for pointless wars, all in the name of greed, power and huge egos......yup, not much has changed. x

An astonishing, but gruesome episode - the remains of those who lived, fought and died.Modern forensic archeology and osteo-archeology, together with advanced digital reconstruction is now able to provide essential information for scientific analysis for more informed study. Very well presented and produced, and thank you for uploading to KZread :)

One of the first pieces of recreated armor I ever bought for fighting in historical recreations was a “Visby Coat of Plates”. This piece if early body armor which and was affordable by many people who fought at the time just before Visby body armor had been carefully made as a faithful recreation.

Those shin wounds and feet completely cut off are not likely from swords. Most certainly it was from Halberds and Bill hooks. They both have the reach and the force to make such cuts.

Well done. The one woman scientist asked why they stood and fought a lost cause? That's a modern way of thinking. 1. They (and their families) were going to die anyway, or be enslaved., for taking up arms. 2. There was probably not time to escape the Danes and their allies. 3. It was their land. And there was no other place to go. The Europeans of the mid-14th Century were very different from the Europeans of the early 21st Century in philosophy and temperament.

I've been into HEMA for a while and found the diagram of the wounds to the limbs telling. I took a break and thought about it and realized it was a methodical, pragmatic, approach to killing the enemy; get 'em down and then take them out. When I continued and the experts agreed I almost gave myself a degree ! :) The only Gutlanders who stood a chance against any of the Danes were those carrying spears. You use the points to try to get into the joints in the armor under the arm, groin, etc. But, the Danes would have been experts at grappling and two -handing their swords... it is the way swords were truly used. Shields were not for bashing but to control the opponenent's weapon and trap or move out of line allowing you to strike without danger. Beautfiully done episode, thank you.

The defenders of Visby in some cases were veterans of other wars who had injuries from other battles that had left them badly crippled, had left healed head injuries that should have killed them years earlier, that were sometimes only twelve years old and wearing armour repurposed from the Viking age. Seeing some of the remains in the City museum was heartbreaking. I can´t imagine they ever thought they could have won against the Danes. And then the city dwellers opened the city gates to the Danes as they saw the battle was lost.

To iron off the market that many armours and weapons at once sure impairs any resistance velleity amongst the defeated, even though there might not have been enough surviving Gotlanders to resist or revenge, nor even to loot the battle field for any reusable/exchangeable material as peasants and serves were expected to do in these dark times. Nevertheless, to dig graves that large and drag in that many heavy armed corpses calls for a great many hands on deck. So... may we say that it was a little over killed

Well, theories are pretty much all we got. It’s not like a skeleton is going to wake up and tell anyone what really happened. The drama actors give life to the words being spoken so that we get a better sense of the horror. If it’s too much, just tap the pause button and swipe.

True, yet an understanding of the cause and effects can alter the experience. Copy of my comment: A Sociological Perspective: All for the desires to have Power, of land, economy, products, People, to Rule over, Control, take Ownership, snd the very same as today, they metely used the technology available at the time. The actions were spurred through the individuals whom held the greater control and power of the particular Danes, that originates from One's mind, their Thoughts, Desires or Fears or both, and these are the very same today. Human Thought Perspective originates from the Lower or Higher Mind and it can either be further influenced from the same or a mix of both. Our "Lower Mind, aka Ego Mind, aka Adolescent Mind" hold all ("our negative thought energies: hear, prejudice, Judgemental, envy, jealousy, hate, etc, the Lackings: lack of self worth, self confidence, self esteem, self value, and balanced self love, etc".) Our Higher Mind aka Mature Mind holds all our Positive Thought Energies: "Love, Joy, Optimism, Passions, Creative, Empathy, Happiness, Secure, Harmony, Wellbeing, Confident, etc, and it is where Wisdom resides." Mastering our Thoughts, Feelings, and Beliefs, are absolutely Key to our Experiences and Experiencings of our Life Journey. Fact Fundamentally, we each Create our own experiences and reality. This is defined at length in the "Universal Laws ", particularly the "Universal Law of Attraction", through Quantum Physics Science, and in depth through Quantum Mechanics. The more savey rulers, then or now, know this in depth, often referred to, I feel somewhat inaccurately, as Psychology, but they use the facts to manipulate the individuals and masses, using the Tools of Power: Money and Information, 8e: Medias, News Medias. In the past these medias were limited so they used Religions, Fears, the fear of wars, of physical harms, lisses, of family, land, wealth, Wellbeing. These areas of Thought and Reasoning don't change, only the Tools change, technology evolves. The weapons get more sophisticated. The fear based thoughts were essential to their holding Rulerships, and th9se with the greater Knowledge, 8e Education, had a decisive advantage over their opponents, and over the masses. The alternative is to enlighten the masses, to promote the Mastering of one's Mind's Thoughts. For their having an established habit of being "Conscious in Thought" + "Applying Higher Mind". This plus Ines Beliefs, our "Subconscious Thought Program " are exactly the components required to work effectively in creating our Individual desired Life Journey Experiences. Conscious Creating. Keeping in mind that Like Energies Frequency Attracts Like. All is Attraction, Attraction, Attraction This applies to every person and the collectives. It 8s done with ir without the knowledge of it, it however, can be far more desirable when 9ne applies their Higher Mind, the Positive Values of these Thought Energies.
