Foreigners Are NO LONGER WELCOME In Medellin 🇨🇴

There has been a recent anti-gringo movement in Colombia. Signs are going up all over the tourist zones of Medellin telling foreigners to pack up and go home.
The reason for this? Skyrocketing rental prices due to "gentrification" which have made living in certain neighborhoods impossible for locals.
This negative attitude towards foreigners has some people worried as tourism to Medellin, Colombia reaches all time highs and the rise of rental prices continues to increase.

I have lived in Medellin, Colombia for almost 10 years. You make many valid points that I agree with, especially the Spanish. It is so frustrating to watch vloggers try to tell the viewer they only need some or a little Spanish. Colombia is a Spanish-speaking country and anyone who thinks he can come here and enjoy the country without speaking the local language will have a limited experience. The lack of understanding the dress code (no flip flops or shorts in public) is setting himself up to get robbed and taken advantage of. Wes, I would be interested to see your source on the 90% of people coming here to live return home. Overall, great insight on Medellin.

8 yrs ago Medellin wasn't inundated with youtubers specifically targeting the cheap sex industry in Medellin. The majority of male foreigners about 95% come to Medellin for the cheap sex industry and nothing else. It turned Medellin into the whore capital of Latin America. That's a fact. They brought dollars and euros and the whore industry became bigger with the Venezuelan whores that invaded Colombia. That industry also increased the seedier industry of drugs, drugging, other crimes like assault, phone snatching, mugging etc. These foreigners are not gonna stay in Medellin and invest in anything substantial. I used harsh language cause it fits the mold.

Every city with a lot of airbnbs has a problem with the "airbnb effect" where local rents go up after airbnbs come in. This includes New York, London, etc. However I am coming to Medellin for two weeks in November. A hotel room almost identical to my airbnb costs twice as much. So although airbnb may cause rents to go up in Medellin, I am also a human and my money is also important to me.

  • @roroinflorida1

Low inventory (very little new constructions), and when supply is available, owners put them on Airbnb (because of ROI).. so no long term apartments are available to local (Colombians or foreigners). That being said, Colombians will the have the tendency to take advantage of anyone because of mentality/culture (and that's very sad and annoying), from a bottle of water to an apartment. I am sorry but this does not happened in Europe or the US. They think short term and not long term. Once you know that, you can navigate a lot easier. Anyhow, I visited Cali and I am thinking about leaving Medellin.

Well, I wouldn't assume all or even most people in Medellin are anti-foreigner. Also it probably makes a difference what kind of immigrant you are: Are you trying to learn the language? Nobody wants a rude or obnoxious guest in their home, right?

Just keep being tourist no residents. If foreigners 'd come bringing contributions for communities well being ,they 'd be welcome as residents. But, most people arriving are shallow minded type. And saying so, it isn't only about drugs and sex, it's also about those in western ego mode . Besides, most people think that "assimilate" is just to speak local languages, it's more than that, is being aware of the changes someone has to do for not disturbing local life. But clearly, in this video , we can realise how an individualistic mindset is so strong in westerners that it's very difficult to change that. So, short visits, and keep in mind that the environment you are running away from it's been created and supported by your consumerism patterns.

Medellin is still stupid cheap compared to any city in the US and lets be realistic, not everyone is going to want to live in Colombia even if it was free. You don’t need to live in Poblado or Laureles either, there are plenty of other neighborhoods, hell even cities to look at. But yeah, it’s getting harder to find a serious woman in Colombia. They all are just looking a few weeks or months ahead and are not thinking long term. They’re not trying to make close connections they’re trying to get what they can from as many people as they can. Not all, obviously there are exceptions, but they’re harder to find. Karens are all over the world complaining about real estate prices, but the truth is the money pouring in is only helping the overall economy.

What up Wes? Always good to see your videos, my brother!! As you know, I've been visiting Medellin since 2021 now. Everything I will state is based on my experiences and my friends' and girlfriend's experiences. I also do my own research on Colombia in general and Medellin in particular. I have to address a few things in your video, brother: 1. Statistically speaking, Medellin is MUCH SAFER than cities in the US. I had this conversation with someone else and broke out the numbers with them. I feel safer in Envigado, Itagui and Laureles than in El Poblado. In my hometown, I feel safer in the Garden District than I do in the lower 9th Ward, just saying. 2. Not most Medellin women are 'working girls'. It just depends on where you go looking. If I want to find a 'fun time Sally', Id go to the working girl places or the clubs. If I want wholesome chick, I'll go to the mall, the grocery store, the library, the park or places like that. I met my girlfriend through my friend's now ex girlfriend. 3. Medellín is a huge city with 3.5 million people. It comes with all the metropolitan issues and benefits. Inflation is everywhere in the world, brother. I have family that lives in Belguim and Germany. I have friends that live in Australia, Russia, and the Philippines, to name a few. They ALL tell me how goods and services gotten expensive. You are right with the tourism; it drives up the prices, but again, that's any place that has a tourism industry. New Orleans is the same way. 4. Those Airbnbs dont sell out every day of the month, brother. One of my friends' wife is a realtor as well and she says the same thing. 5. A lot of expats I know still live in Colombia, brother. Of the 5 that I know, 4 are married. I will make the 5th 😊 After listening to a lot of your videos, I know you have a distain for Medellin. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences there. I've never gotten robbed of the 11 times I've been here (knock on wood) just like I've never gotten robbed in ANY city I've been to in the world. I move a certain way when I'm out and about, brother. All of the expats that I know, NONE of them say they've been robbed. I also assess that you definitely don't like the fact that gringos go to Colombia strictly for sex, but as you stated, it happens. A lot of what you state here could be said about Cartegena too from what I've heard from 2 expats that live there. They say it's actually worse, but I want to visit just to see. Man, I LOVE your videos and I love the fact that you allow these conversations on your platform. Thank you brother for all you do! I'll be back in Medellín in August to propose to my girl!!!😁

We've been to Medellín, Cartagena, & now, Cali. Being that I'm with a native, I have upper-intermediate spanish skills, & I'm not out hitting the clubs putting myself at soak with a bunch of women, it seems I can bypass the majority of issues that we face. I think the government can pass laws to charge Airandb business from the profit they are making, at the expense at loss of the affordable housing for the local people. The problem with the inelasticity of the housing. Housing is an essential human right.Housing is a form of economic rent. I want the government to reach inside the commerical market. And demand that people pay no more than 25 % of their income. The money is going to property owners, the wealthy class. The poor can't escape paying housing cost. And it is understandable that local people feel resentful!

Yeah, basically gentrification is happening everywhere. Californians earning in HCOL areas are invading all over the US jacking up prices and bringing their "culture" with them. Remote work is ruining lots of communities and turning small towns that had a local economy that was keeping population at bay into basically tourist economies. Seen it happening all over the west coast, Texas, Colorado, Florida, etc. Sell one house in the Bay area and can afford 2 homes in Bend Oregon? Amazing! With Medellin its just that much easier to pick out the invaders. I'm visiting Medellin with my Colombian gf next week for a trip to see her family and I was cancelled twice on airbnb reservations... Thought maybe it could be the gringo prejudice so had her try to reserve the same place and Boom! it worked. Haha might be awkward when we check in. 🤷

The property taxes and bills has been getting more expensive and makes sense that landlords want more proftis otherwise it would be pointless to offer an appt or house for rent. Its not just being greedy. However, I understand that might exist abusive overcharges aswell.. The prostituion, drugs and robbery are not a new thing, these issues have been happenning even before Medellin turned more open to the world the only different is that foreigners are easier prays. A remarkable porcentage of working class women have practiced the prostitution. You can ask to many women in Medellin and most of them would tell you that at least one of their close friends has been prepago for a couple of times. Medellin has wonderful things to offer but Pais must acknowledge that this city has dirty history back then and did not dissapear just transformed itself.

Something I see undiscussed is that the intelligence level of Latin Americans is very low. The curiosity levels are very low. The education in Latin America is very poor, and so basically you end up talking to what seems like children. Even the well off Latin Americans don't know much because their jobs are based upon who they know rather than what they know. I have observed this at every Latin American country I have been to. The positive is you can just interact with Latin Americans transactionally and then get stimulation through the Internet with friends outside of Latin America. So if its cheap and you can get good weather, then I guess its ok if you can find a safe place. But in terms of interesting discussions with people that know things, Latin America is not where is at. The funny thing is Argentina. Argentians say they are not Latin Americans but European. I found Argentinians to be increadibly unknowledgable. I found an Argentinian who had no idea about the concepts she was talking about. Like a parrot really. She was interacting with me as if she was my equal, while I could tell she barely looked into the things she was discussing. The difference with Argentinians is not knowledge but their exaggerted opinion. As a consequence these countries have a mass shortage of technically knowledgable individuals. And it has natural outcomes rom things like infrastructure maintenance.

I was in Medellin in March of this year and I saw those signs and the "gringo go home" protests. Medellin would not be Medellin without tourism so for Colombians to have that attitude is very ignorant and prejudicial, and just indicative of general lack of education in the population. Tourism for Colombia is HUGE and runs about 6% of their GDP. Without tourism, Medellin would wither away and die, and all those protesters would be unemployed and searching through the garbage for their next meal. It's not like they produce anything in Medellin right? Like cars or tech because you need an education for that. Medellin's principal revenue generator is tourism. And maybe the principal product is the women, but hey, the government says prostitution is legal so the whole country is one giant brothel and Medellin is the capital. It's the law and laws influence culture. They should be encouraging tourism and protesting the high crime rates. ...... And FYI, the AirBNB place that I rent was $1200/month 5 years ago. Last year, it was $2800/month. This year it was $2400. 2 bedroom, 2 bath 12th floor with armed security. Global travel has decreased this year and recessions turn that off like a faucet. Medellin dies without tourism, sex or recreational. Other than that, the rural parts of the country are beautiful and probably one of the best moutain biking destination is the world.

Medellín was quite fine before the tourist boom. You sound ignorant. Tourism benefits hugely but let's not get it twisted, the city was quite fine before, and in ways, better. An example would be in Parque Lleras. Tourism fucked it up. Also, tourism is not the biggest industry in the city. The majority of its progress was made before foreigners stepped foot. Some of the best things about the city are due its isolated culture. Watch how Medellin now slowly loses some of its key characteristics now that it is exposed to the outside world. Mark my words.

For a "good" woman, go to Iran instead. Iranian women have good values and morals. Yes, they respect themselves. They're also not that bad looking and many of them jump at the chance to leave their country.

Medellin it’s a decent size city. When I went outside the tourist areas I rarely saw Many foreigners. Even at some of the other big shopping centers and mall’s. I also think that there’s a large percentage of working women with regular jobs That have never had contact with foreigners or interacted with one on a personal level. A lot of those women work 12 hour days six days a week. Also Probably 70% to 80% of tourist don’t really leave the tourist areas when in Medellin.

Went to Colombia in October for the second time (prior was 2018) and really felt the changes. So many lame gringos walking around with 0 spanish. The locals are still friendly enough if you speak spanish, but it doesnt feel quite as welcoming as when I first came. Met a ton of foreigners at a conference in Bogota who were gonna go to Medellin afterwards thinking they were gonna pull crazy tail. Really seems spent.

So People that go to Columbia and don’t speak Spanish are Lame? So if You go to Brazil You need to learn Portuguese, Japan-Japanese, Germany- German. When you’re traveling and exploring you have to stay in a place for extended period of time to see if that language is even worth learning and you like the place and its people…

@@acdsfjhu Yeah if you go somewhere and dont even attempt to learn some basic vocab youre a dork. If you are spending at least a few weeks somewhere and you cant express yourself in very simple ways, youre not gonna make it. Especially an easier language like Spanish

@@Yalbou you don't have to learn the language but learning hello, thank you and a few phrases goes a long way wherever you go. If you travel the world a combination of English, some Spanish and French will help you communicate almost anywhere.

Lived in Medellin for year and change, majority of the women you will meet at the gym, mall, bars etc .. are into that flashy lifestyle. If you want a wife or faithful girlfriend, go to smaller cities in Colombia. The problem is you will need to learn some Spanish. If you're looking for a more traditional woman with a low to none body count, Colombia is where it's at. Get your passport 🛂 fellas

This will come to a boiling point where the government will have to do something or the risks will become too dangerous as the main selling point (Feeling welcomed) is starting to disappear and combine this with not speaking the language and you have a big problem. Oh and humans tend to generalize and so it only takes a case of one bad gringo for everyone to be painted with the same brush.

I have been to Medellin twice in my 20 years in Colombia. It is pretty but I prefer Cali much more. I like old school....enough danger to keep out scurred idiots and still alot of the older ways. I would not want to live in Medellin at all.
