In Italy I was mistaken for a Japanese. Then, an Arab once told me I could pass for a Saudi. In the US, some people thought I was Mexican or Hispanic. I am proud to be ethnically Filipino.

Before 1985 Filipinos in the US were regarded as the 'INVISIBLE MINORITY' These were because of Asian features, Spanish family names, modern American first name with Brooklynese vocabulary. '

In the Philippines, most Filipinos assume every white to be "Americano". I guess in countries where the majority of color is different from a foreigner, depending on how they were raised or on their experience growing up, they have an assumption of where a person comes from. Its normal, imho, but the important thing is to respect where people come from and don't assume anything until you've met, talked and got to know them more.

A Filipino here. I was in Bangkok and was always mistaken for a Thai. I was in Rome and a Mexican couple were taking to me in Spanish. I was in Austria and a gentleman from Chile kept taking to me in Spanish. In Athens, a gentleman from the Dominican Republic invited me for lunch. I can speak a little Spanish but am not a fluent Speaker. Funny thing is that I don't think I look like a Latino. I guess it's just because of my Spanish family name.

i've always wondered why most people in batanes are taller than average filipinos until i realized that seafood is very accessible to them that it's been an important part of their diet, hence, seafood calcium helping develop their skeletal growth. their age-old tradition of drying fish is so important because they experience the most number of typhoons in the philippines. and what better way to enjoy those crunchy fried dried dorado and flying fish than during rainy/stormy days. batanes has always been in my bucket list.

Im Filipino but I have French and Cherokee ancestry. Ever since my teen years and my young adult life, I grew out and had long hair. Whats interesting is that people that doesnt really know my bakground would compliment my hair and say things out of the blue like, your hiar is so nice, its like native american hair. Then they try and guess my age and they are at the range of 35 to under 40. When I tell them that im 51, they immediately go to the skin features on how healthy and young my skin are. Thank you for this insightful video. Reason ive been looking is because 2 weeks ago, a colleague ask 'what are real Fiilipinos?'. He is of Koren and Japanese ancestry that also lived and worked in China for 10 years... I had a long explanation. 😅..

Filipinos are a mixed of different races. I was in Malaysia to buy a slipper in a mall store and I was mistaken for a Japanese. In college, I was mistaken for a Chinese. Many of the present crap of Filipinos are mestizos, meaning half-foreigner like Fil-Am e.g. Ms. World Megan Young; Fil-Spanish e.g. Actress Marian Rivera, Family actors Gutierrez; Fil-German e.g. Ms. Universe Pia Wurztbach, Family actors Eigenmann; Fil-Japanese e.g. Actor Akihiro; Fil- Jordanian e.g. Yasser Marta; Fil-Polish e.g. Basketball player Robert Jaworski; Fil-Chinese e.g. Magnates Cojuangcos, Gotuacos, Gotianums, Sys, Yuchengcos, Angs, Tans, etc.; Fil- Russian e.g. Family actors Kookoritchin; Fil-Swedish e.g. Actress Cristine Reyes; Fil-Nigerian e.g. CJ Perez. AJ Edu; Fil-Indian Ms. Universe 3rd runner up Venus Raj.

I just have basic cheap and normal smartphone i said....My husband tells me I look like I have some kind of European blood especially after looking my mothers photos in black & white old photo, how my mother look like too, #nose and facial feature to be specific..not a single chance to be pure Filipino blood my husband said...Once again, Im proud Filipino being bisaya/Cebuano roots genes both parents!

Madeline shares my perspective. In our local context, distinguishing foreigners is often challenging due to a lack of exposure. We typically perceive them solely as foreigners, relying mainly on information from social media and mainstream media. This doesn't amount to discrimination (for us). For instance, when I encounter a white person, the first individuals who come to mind are often figures like Maria Carey and Britney Spears. Similarly, when I encounter black Americans, I may associate them with artists like Nicki Minaj or Cardi B. My initial impression of you is that you resemble a well-known personality that i admire so i might treat you like one. However, this isn't discriminatory. It's merely our limited ability to differentiate or recognize foreigners, especially when we've just met them once, in contrast to fellow Filipinos, whom we can often identify at a glance or by the tone of their voice, we can easily identify what their region of origin in the Philippines.

I live in Canada, I came here in my teens; 9 times out of 10 people think I'm Spanish. When i get darker in the summer some East Indians think I'm East Indian. I guess i could past for a Spanish or Latina. An older lady from Argentina thought I was Spanish and couldn't believe that I am not she even grabbed her husband and asked him what he thinks. She said she never made a mistake before and I' m the first. I look and sound ambiguous enough that when i went to the Philippines with my husband i have to speak English to him because he couldn't understand Filipino and people would speak Filipino about us and not realized that i can understand them. When i went to Divisoria the ladies would say that I am a foreigner and i would tell them I am not a foreigner and should not charge me higher than the locals.

The origin of the Filipinos are the Austroloids , whose descendants are the Aeta( black skin) and the Austronesians , whose descendants are the Malay( brown in color). The Aeta migrated to the Philippines 30,000 years ago while the Malay migrated 14,000 years ago.The Malay dominates the country and constitutes the ancestry of majority of the Filipinos today. Then the Spaniards colonized the country hence you have the mestizas and mestizos (half Spaniard half Filipino). After the Spaniards, the Americans colonized the country and that’s how the FilAm ( half American half Filipino) was borne. Of course before the Spaniards , the Chinese were already trading in the country hence you have the Tsinoy ( half Chinese half Filipino). Since the Filipinos are adventurous, some of them married Europeans , Africans, other Asians countries, Middle Easterners, Australians, British and so on. In short, the Filipinos are diverse which contradicts the Korean gentleman , who said the Filipinos are not diverse.

Filipinos’ majority distinct look is Malay race look (Malays in Malasia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar ) The other Filipino “looks” are mix of Chinese, Caucasian and Middleeastern (Including Indian) but still there are some pure blood Filipinos who look like mixed Caucasian, middle eastern or Chinese. This look is common in Southeast Asian countries.

Good point. An example would be certain people in Cainta with darker skin, thick hair and high noses. When the British landed in the 1700s, some of their Sepoy (Indian tribe) soldiers deserted and intermarried with the locals. Some went to the Bicol region where cooking with coconut milk and chili were introduced.

Filipinos, some have fair skin, brown, some dark skinned etc. Our skin & features can be attributed to the mixture of races that colonized the Philippines: Spaniards (400yrs), Chinese(commerce), American, etc. But one thing about Filipinos is that even if our parents are old & sickly, we take care of them until death. We never send them to nursing homes. Love of family is important & extended family included. We also treat friends like family.

My three siblings and I are Filipino-American, so I can only speak to being of Filipino descent born and raised here in the U.S. (southern California). My parents were both born and raised in the Philippines...but my mom's paternal grandfather was from China...and my dad's paternal grandfather was from Spain. Us four "kids" (we're in our late-20s--early 30s) are fiercely proud of our Filipino heritage--even though we don't understand Tagalog. But we are always mistaken for Spanish, Mexican, Italian, Puerto Rican, Brazilian, or (for me) Hawaiian--because I have darker hair than my siblings. We're also fairly tall (our youngest sister is the shorty at 5'10"). We're gonna mix things up even more--we're all married to different-race spouses (a blue-eyed blonde, a Mexican-American, and a Korean-American. My kid sister did marry a fellow Filipino-American). You should see our kids! LOL!!

Hello, Nelly. There is a word from Dr. Myles Munroe saying that Citizenship, Race, and Ethnicity is all seen from within. No one and nobody can tell and see your Nationality, because it is from within. Filipinos for example are very diverse. Diverse in skin color, in height, in built, in ethnicity, in culture, in morale, in lifestyle, in religion, and in upbringing. But, if you ask them who they are, they will all say, they are Filipinos. The same is true for other countries. We welcome diversity and crush-out Racism.

very true, but not that much visible from outside, not like the neighboring country like thailand, malaysia and indonesia, it's simple to see different skin tone, type of hair(especially indonesia the more east you go the more curly and darker skin you got but maybe not too visible if the area are predominantly muslim cause of the way they worn) the bad thing about diversity is just the more diversity the nations the more conflict you easily get into

We do have very similar features with fellow South East Asians as majority of us are of Malay descent. The Leaders of the Kingdoms before the Spanish Occupation literally have cousins from other Royals in South East Asia. And same as with other South East Asian countries, a portion of the population also look like Chinese (not East Asian in general). The Chinese people has been doin business with Filipinos since time immemorial that seeing a Chinese speaking in a different language then suddenly switching to Filipino is very common. It's honestly hard to find a Filipino who's really of Filipino or just Malay descent. A lot have a mix of Chinese blood in them. At least that's how it is in my circle. On the note that if you see a Euro-Asian person then most likely he/she is a Filipino is of course, because of the Spanish Occupation when most of these births were due to the oppressors violating our women. Some sad stories mixed into that origin of the Diverse-Filipino features.

Yes Indonesian and Filipinos look similar. Understandably, because Indonesians are our ancestors. They are the second wave of people who came to the Philippines very long time ago. First were the Aetas then Indonesians then the Malays. That resulted to the skin tone that varies from very dark to lighter ones. Mix that with the blood of Chinese and Arab traders of the distant past and later migration of Chinese and other Asians. To add to this mixing, are the Spanish and American colonization and Japanese invasion.

Boxing great Manny Pacquiao is quintessential Filipino. I don't see any European, Chinese, or Indian features on him. His last name is not even Spanish which lots of Filipinos have. Traits admired by Filipinos is being great yet humble. Famous singer Lea Salonga is whom I would point as a typical Filipino woman.

I was mistaken a lot of times as thai or Taiwanese. My sister is much fairer than me, she looks mistiza while my bro on the otherhand has a slightly darker tone than me.

Philippines is the Greece, Balcans, Turkey of Asia. Basically in those countries you find people with tanned skinned, light skin, dark hair, light hair and even dark eyes and light eyes. Because of their history of various ethnic groups migrating similarly to the Philippines. Island nations also tend to build greatet genetic diversity moving from island to island mixing genes just like Greece, Balcans.

I’m Filipino by ethnicity and I always thought I have a typical polynesian island look with some bit of Spanish from my mom’s side..but was surprised to be considered Chinese-looking by the Chinese! They always talk to me in their language. In my country, the Chinese look is considered attractive, so am flattered by that comparison. I dont have mono-lids..have very big eyes, long lashes and thick eyebrows..and I have body hair unlike the mongoloid race.
