This is Sankranthi that in Astrological calendar , This is celebrated even in Thai, Lao Cambodia, This is called Songkran in Thailand

In astrology, the sun follows the ecliptic. The ecliptic is divided into twelve sections called rashis, travelling eastward from Mesha. The rashi names are similar to those in the West, indicating a common Sumerian origin. The first day of the month is when the sun enters each rashi before nightfall. If the sun enters a rashi after sunset but before sunrise, the following day is the first of the month (there are minor differences). The days are then labelled 1, 2, 3... until the next month's first. So we get 12 months of 29-32 days. This fluctuation in length happens due to the earth's elliptical orbit around the sun and the transit point falling before or after sunrise. Months are named from the rashi that the sun travels in that month. The solar New Year begins on the first of Mesha. On the Gregorian calendar, it falls around April 13 or 14.

@@vijayafernando1based on your shadow I guess. If no shadow it means it’s 12 noon. Likewise they decided time based on the angle of the shadow as per my knowledge.

The host is very humble soft spoken

Even in our culture we do the same but with cow milk. My mother says they do the same when a new wife enters a house. This ceremony represents overflowing abundance and prosperity. ❤❤❤❤

According to Sinhalese astrology, New Year begins when the sun moves from Meena Rashiya (the house of Pisces) to Mesha Rashiya (the house of Aries). It also marks the end of the harvest season and of spring. And that happens on April 14. That's why it's the new year day.

They believe this is a new begining of the year. During the neutral time they visit the temples and avoid from doing there day today activities to start fresh from the new year. During ospicious time they start the fresh year by lighting the herth and eating and starting there usual works.

The hindu new year is celebrated all over the world, when the new harvest season also starts that's the time of celebration. In kerela it is called vishu, in Punjab as vaishakhi, in Assam it is bihu, in Chennai as Pongal and so on, it is a way of thanking God for the harvest

No, it's called Sinhala & Tamil new year & most of the Tamils are Hindus in Sri Lanka. But this is basically not a Hindu festival & its a Sinhalese ancient traditions involved from ancient times of the island.Also there is no God worshipping like in India for this festival !!

According to their historical calendar the New Year falls on a day in mud April according to the movement of the stars. In that full moon days are considered as holy days by Buddhists and are holidays just as Sundays are for Christians.
