Foreign policy powerhouse - Alicia Kearns MP | Women With Balls

Alicia Kearns is the Conservative MP for Rutland and Melton; and the first female chair of the foreign affairs select committee. Alicia built a reputation as a foreign policy powerhouse working in communications and counter-terrorism for the civil service. After leaving, she spent some time in the private sector before deciding to become an MP. In 2019 she was elected in the Conservative safe seat, Rutland and Melton where she now lives with her family.
On the podcast, Alicia talks about why she left the civil service and the time she ‘came out’ as a Conservative. She also shares her love for her Rutland and Melton, describing her constituents as ‘her people’. But makes no bones about how hard she finds the job: ‘I love being able to campaign and change policy. But I can’t say I enjoy the job’. Now, as the chair of the foreign affairs select committee in Parliament, Alicia wants to improve the UK’s resilience in diplomacy and ensure Rishi Sunak won’t back away from Britain’s international responsibilities.

Very much aligned with this lady. We need to stop the hate and nastiness in politics. It is time to inject more professionalism and solution focussed people counteracting the hate mongers like Nicola Sturgeon and Angela Rayner.

If all MP's were this thoughtful, pragmatic and expert on a brief they would be much more popular and effective. As for the Conservative Party briefing against one of their own as a 'bad mother', I am sure that won't be forgotten.

Quick question, how did you afford to live in London on £50.00 a week? If you're parents had normal jobs, how could they afford to fund this, if in fact that's what they did?

@@FC-PeakVersatility Really? So the fact that just a few years ago MSN were telling everyone how curupt the Ukraine is and how it's full of Nazi battalions. There was an agreement in place but the Ukraine didn't keep to it. You really think the UK is capable of fighting a war with Russia?

@@GAZ_X well for starters I’m not fool enough to swallow msn’s left wing garbage without researching it myself. Secondly until 2014 Ukraine was corrupt, with its Russian puppet in power rather than the democratically elected prime minister it now has. There’s no doubt that years of communist control has had a negative effect on corruption but the current incumbent is trying hard to change that. Thirdly every nation has its ‘nazi’/right-wing extremist group. Any suggestion that Ukraine’s population is overrun by these is Russian propaganda built out of Ukrainian collaboration with the Nazi German occupiers of Poland and the Ukrainian SSR during World War II - just like Vichy France did.

@@FC-PeakVersatility and the UK going to war with Russia? You seem to have missed that bit. Apparently the Russian government has Intel that the UK was involved in the attack on the pipeline and shipping. Do you agree that the Government should be sending billions of Tax payer's money in weapons and money to Ukraine to assist them in killing Russians? My opinion is we shouldn't and we should be adding a peaceful solution.

Isolationism and neutrality should be our foreign policy... Who voted to be world police/enforcers for the global elite. What do we get out of rivalling Russia for EUrope or China for USA. Between the EU and US we have a trade deal which barely covers 5% of our economy which forces us to cede sovereignty to foreign courts while annexing Northern Ireland. I believe greater security could be found by investing in/Advancing our own fully independent nuclear defence/delivery systems, While bringing in our own Swiss style military service/civic service program would make us stronger when defending our island from invasion. A neutral outlook would leave us with no great power enemies/rivals and allow us to beef up our capabilities. While the current status quo doesn't serve the British people, At best it serves some 'liberal' ideology at worst it serves a global plutocracy leaving Britain with the nuclear target painted across our land... Terrorism.. Through withdrawing from the global courts/institutions we could deport them all leaving no ground to run/hide. While a neutrality outlook would've prevented ever becoming a target in the first place...

Agreed. The lack of a genuinely self interested anti-neocon right is one of the main problems with British conservatism. The Republicans in the US might still be dominated by neocon warmongers, but at least they've had a significant influx of "America First" candidates since Trump. In Britain on the other hand, I can't think of a single Tory MP who isn't a cheerleader for the American Empire. (Since that's what the "collective West" really is. We should focus most of our military spending on the Royal Navy and use it to protect British shipping (which we should refocus on) but aside from that we only need an air force and army designed for prevention against invasion. A defence policy that rakes advantage of being an island nation.
