    I feel that low backhand serves are played too often at the amateur level. It gives the opponent too many options for the return if the server is not moving like a pro.

    But low backhand serves can force the opponent into a defensive position immediately - a good low serve will tend to force a lift. If the server isn't moving well, any serve will put them at a disadvantage.

    It took me ages to graduate to a backhand serve but it was really worth it. I find the key to consistency is to move as few things as possible and the backhand serve done properly is basically only wrist movement. Forehand serves involve a lot more movement of body parts so is harder to make consistent. A lot of players in my club play backhand for low serves and forehand for high serves so they are very predictable!

    In juniors, I used my forehand to serve low & high for singles & doubles. I was really good at it! In doubles recreational play, it annoyed my partners & opponents so much they tried to tell me I am not allowed to serve with my forehand. Their reasoning is because everyone serves backhand in doubles. 🤦‍♂ On separate points, I will either serve low or high with either my backhand or forehand. My opponent will see I am serving by forehand or backhand but would have to predict when I would do a low serve or a high serve. They tried to tell me this is illegal as I must serve backhand for the entire match as this is the way everyone serves in doubles. "I'm not everyone. I spent hours practicing serving. Do you?" I think they were more annoyed with the consistency of serving right on the line.

    If you play with both you'll find it's pretty much a completely different game with plastics - they have a different feel and flight and anyone used to playing with feathers can be made to look like they've never played before when they use plastics! Nothing beats the crisp feel of a straight-from-the-tube feather bird! 🙂

  • @stevemawer848

    @stevemawer848

    3 ай бұрын

    The low backhand serve is kind of an attacking serve which is difficult for the receiver to attack - a high forehand serve can be smashed straightaway. And low forehand serve has a much longer shuttle travel compared to a backhand serve, so gives the opponent more time to react. And I believe a backhand serve is easier to make consistent due to the limited movement of body parts. Of course, I could be wrong!

    Whilst I agree that the forehand serve is an important stroke why are we asking beginners to master, what is. a very difficult action? The forehand serve requires a swinging racket to contact / hit a dropped shuttlecock - for beginners this a recipe for failure! Yet this is what coaches and teachers demand of total beginners! Grass root badminton coaches and teachers need to be more understanding and get players playing by beginning with the backhand serve which does not require the same degree of difficulty. And yes, once they are enjoying badminton, introduce the forehand serve.
