Foreground and Background

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
Today we are working with two colors, representing two layers in our drawing: the foreground and the background. We are drawing with one continuous drawing with each color, so that we keep moving our line and can't get into details or start getting fussy.
You can do this exercise at home, on location, or use a photo. Make sure that your subject has a very clear foreground, so you can use it as a frame, to start drawing the background.
I am currently in the process of making a book about drawing: Life is better when you draw it. It'll be in English and it's filled with motivation and inspiration for your drawing practice.

I find this type of two coloured drawing really appealing. I remember asking you on a previous video what this style was called and I have been obsessed with it ever since :)

I just realized I have never sketched with a continuous line 👀 This a simple and great example of drawing foreground&background. Seems easily understandable ☺️

I haven't tried to drink pencil shavings, but I have dipped my watercolor brush into my tea cup instead of the water jar. lol

Another great video! I’ll give it a try - but what’s the reason for the continuous line? If I draw foreground and background as usual (lifting the pencil) would it be a different exercise? What would I miss? Anyway, I tried your suggestion of drawing from a live street camera the other day… boy, was that different for me!! The result was not a masterpiece but I think it really pushed me out of my comfort zone. Thanks! 😊

Yes it would be kind of a different exercise. The continuous line keeps you going and distracts you from details and “the big scene” because you’re constantly figuring out how to get from one shape to the other. But of course you can try without the continuous line. And hurray for stepping out of your comfort zone!

Ouch on the pencil shaving beverage! 😅 I thought paint water was bad. Would you paint over a continuous line drawing? Can I ask for tips on how to “correct” my drawing that tends to lean on one side even though I draw according to relationships between edges, and my eyes THINk that I have captured the perspective right. I don’t see the “mistake” until I walk away or I take a photo to compare. Also, would love to get tips on how you paint structures that are hollow (eg: a big shed with roof and stilts to support)? The stilts/pillars are narrow that I cant paint clean lines. And I left out the background to simplify the sketch but The background is visible behind the open shed.

Yeah you can paint over a continuous line. Just don’t drink the paint water! Is it a bad thing if things lean towards one side a little? If you know this happens each time, perhaps ‘correct course’ as you go and exaggerate a little towards the other side. Also, pause to see where you’re at so you can see if things are out of perspective and you can course correct as you go. Step away from the drawing every so often for just a few moments to look and see the relationships and propositions in your subject.

@@KoosjeKoene Thanks Koosje! I'll have to try to course correct. I think I need to stop and look somewhere else to reset 😅
