Ford Transit Water Leak Part 1 - Protection

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've been meaning to look at this problem for a while now and with a week of torrential rain I couldn't avoid it any longer! This week I begin to tackle the water leak in the front of my van. In this video I focus on protecting the floor against water damage; welding up the holes, treating rust damage and sealing the floor. I have a good idea where the water is coming from now, which I will share with you in part 2! so stay tuned...
Thanks for watching, please don't forget to like and subscribe.

    Was looking forward to a detailed exposé of the process of removing the seats, but bish bash bosh, and done. The bolts holding the seats down on my 2000 smiley transit are rusted tight, and don't look quite so easy!

    Sorry mate, it wasn’t too bad to remove so didn’t record the full process. Was 6 x t40 bolts if I remember correct, bolted straight to the floor pan.

    What You do not realise, is that the water was not coming from the floor. It was coming from the roof and flooding the floor. I am an owner of mk7 transit 2009 manufacture date. I do not have any holes in the floor, but there is a lot of water below the carpet. I read that some weldings on the roof are getting loose and this is a normal problem. REALLY A SPECIAL CAR I must say.

    Great job you are very good and must love your Ford transit. One thing I would check is your door seals especially the tops of them as they perish and go flat.also I had to remove my scuttle panel just below the front windscreen and re seal it as water was getting in there hope this helps. Keep up the good work I enjoy your videos especially as I have a mrk 5 transit camper as well.

    Thank you, I do love my old transit! Simple engineering that just works. I think that might be one of the places it’s coming in from. What did you use to seal the scuttle panel back down? Cheers Thanks for following the channel 😁

    Hi I used Granville RTV black sealant you have to apply it and let it dry before assembling the parts back together

    good video, I had a similar problem with my mk 5 autosleeper duetto, I dont have a welder so I used fiberglass repair kit as the hole wasn't to big, but welding is definitely a better job, I love your DIY videos keep them coming👍

    Looking forward to seeing how you go about fixing the leak. I’ll have to get some red oxide down on my floor too. I trust treated and painted over the patches with hanmerite but I think the red oxide is definitely a good long term plan

  • @drQ11235

    @drQ11235

    If you research modern formulations of red oxide primers, it seems they don't contain any lead any more, so it seems don't actually do much to prevent rust, blew my mind. Personally I use hydrate-80 (fantastic stuff) and then follow with an epoxy primer.

    So it's OK to plate over a damaged area. Thts a time saver. I always cut the crap out. So my inner front wings out....got doorstep outrigger to replace..outter sill and the dreaded strut mount. I'm lucky if I can loosen a bolt in a day when there's no one to call on. Heehee love welding though. Lucky you only had few rust spot on tge flooring..I've had to put floor pan either side. I used a Indesit washing machine panel, cus it's already ribbed for strength. My ford Indesit heeheee

    As long as you remove all of the rust and then patch it shouldn’t come back. The way you’re going about it will be longer lasting though 👍🏼 That’s a good idea using the washing machine panel haha 😆 what welding set up do you have? I’m looking to upgrade mine soon

    Great video mate, I will be doing the exact same soon what grinding disc are you using on your angle grinder mate ? And also where do you get your metal plates from to make sections for patching rot

  • @TurnersWorkshop97

    @TurnersWorkshop97

    3 жыл бұрын

    Cheers mate! I use all sorts of different discs. I have 115mm wire brush attachment for the grinder from eBay, it’s brutal and a very good tool for removing rust, flap discs, grinding discs and cutting discs. Ebay for the sheet metal 1mm for panels as it’s easier to shape and 2mm for the floor really if you don’t mind the patches being visible 👍🏼 if I get a chance later today I will put a few links in the description

    Hey, thank you for your comment. I can’t remember unfortunately as It was a case of adjusting it at the time to suit. It was 0.8mm flux core wire. I’ve since changed my mig welder and now use a MIG180 by RTEC. I have a video about it on my channel if you’re interested 😊 brilliant machine and comes with a cheat sheet for adjusting the settings depending on wire and material thickness.

    I did make an adapter plate in this video to fit a double seat from a mk7 transit which might be useful. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iJaczrCwnKmtprA.html The other option is to just drill new holes and bolt it to the floor.
