    The one notable benefit of having crappy or average tires is knowing you probably won't shatter your driveline. Rob Dahm's old videos of his 3-rotor come to mind. I vividly remember when he snapped the output shaft of his transmission in two.

    Great video! I work at Moser Engineering who specializes in building rear ends and axles and the 8.8 is the common way to go for a build like that. The one thing I would say from experience, the Truetrac recommends running non-synthetic fluids however they’ve tested synthetic oil and mentioned it works however they don’t recommend. Also a friction modifier in a gear driven unit is also not recommended (by Truetrac) because they decrease performance because it reduces differential bias. Just a friendly heads up, keep up the great videos!

    Hi viewers, i've done tons of reading about various diffs. Diff: (examples) Basic description. Operation during tight turns, how aggressive the diff is: Street? Track? Drift? Open diffs: Nothing is forcing the wheels to rotate together. Smoothest operation, zero aggressiveness: Great for street driving. Bad for track. Bad for drifting. Helical diffs: (TorSen, Tru Trac, etc.) They are open diffs until enough force pushes the gears into the casing to try to force the wheels to rotate together. Smooth operation, not aggressive: Great for street cars. Fine for track. Bad for drifting. Clutch-type diffs: (Posi, Trac-Lok, etc.) They are diffs that utilize clutches that are pressed together when the wheels are rotating at different speeds to force them to rotate together. Can be tuned. Operation isn't super smooth, aggresiveness depends on tuning: Fine for street cars. Good for track. Fine for drifting. Viscous diffs: They are clutch type diffs that essentially use wet clutches instead of dry clutches so that they're far less aggressive than aftermarket clutch-type diffs. Smooth operation, not aggressive. Great for street cars. Fine for track. Bad for drifting. The above diffs really aren't "locked". The wheels are persuaded to spin together rather than firmly locked together. To achieve that you need either a selectable locker, an automatic locker, or a locked diff. Selectable lockers: (E-lockers, air-lockers, manual lockers) Can be locked or open at your leisure. Good for street driving. Really only used in offroading although i would love to have a selectable locker in my drift car. Automatic locker: (Lunchbox locker) Locker will decide on its own when to go from open to locked. These lockers use centrifugal force to slam a pin between the gears to force the tires to rotate together. They're sketchy but they're cheap. Only used in budget off-road builds. Fully locked diffs: (Full spool, mini spool, welded) Locked 100% of the time. They're annoying on the street because the wheels are forced to rotate together. Performing tight turns is awful and the car is extremely easy to kick sideways. Abysmal operation, horrible for street cars, 100% aggressiveness: Bad for track. Good for drifting. There are some other funny diffs but these are the basics. Read up before purchasing the diff for your car so that you can fully meet your expectations.

    If you run a friction modifier with a trutrac/torsen diff it will not lock up as much since you made it more slippery. It's recommended to run a petroleum (non synthetic)gear oil like a GL5 I have only been able to find a gl5 without a friction modifier at John Deere and Ford so far.. nice work in that diff build

  • @tristanjohnson8995

    @tristanjohnson8995

    Жыл бұрын

    I agree with this. The increased slipperyness reduces the TBR a bit. A Wavetrac or something similar with clutches for adjusting TBR would need it, but not your normal Torsen T2 / Eaton Truetrac. As for where to find gl5 without additive, Sta-Lube makes a few, and is usually available at NAPA. LiquiMoly makes one as well, I think.

    The purpose of the PPF on the RX7 (Stock PPF that is) is that when the diff is under load it will want to twist upwards. So the long level arm of the PPF connected to the transmission helps reduce that diff hop. It also helps to isolate vibrations, since the vibrations are going through the diff mounts and engine mounts. Having the S2000 modified PPF that connects to the frame means you'll have more diff twist (shorter lever arm) and more vibration since it's a new vibration point. In an ideal world there would be a full PPF that could be used to connect the 8.8 rear end to the S2000 transmission to maximize stiffness and reduce new points of vibration. Sorry for the essay

    I still think that the FD is one of the most attractive cars ever made. If you ever decide to get it resprayed, I think the newest Soul Red Crystal color from Mazda is a great choice. It's deep, rich, and metallic and it lights up like it's on fire under bright sunlight while taking on cooler, more maroon and purple tones in the shade. I also found it amusing, but also reassuring that the first thing they did when receiving a brand new LSD from Eaton was to tear it apart and inspect it, all while looking not particularly impressed.

Your hears and gasoline logo is prime for a shirt or jumper/hoodie. You’re both very creative and could make some really good designs and sell merch. I’m not saying turn in to a giveaway competition channel and be annoying like the others, but a few tshirts etc would make you decent additional revenue and actually be a design worth buying instead of something someone designed in MSPaint like some other channels merch.

    I really enjoyed this video. I always find seeing how stuff works internally, fascinating. Specially all the little parts in cars we never think about that actually does alot! I'm Canadian, I will send you Coffee Crisps for the next 10 years for that car.

    Just watching them do that machining work by hand... that would've taken me like four hours to do what they did in five minutes. Experience goes a long way.

    The Ford 8.8 rear diff is popular with the BMW guys, as well. Actually thinking of putting one in my E46.

    Interesting. I wonder why he went with an Explorer instead of a fully built Mustang rear end. I guess it’s just cheaper.

    I'm fascinated by the machining and deburring of this shop. I don't like sharp edges on anything vehicle related. I have the Detroit tru-trac 8.8 locking diff in my 95 Mustang and i like it a lot. I didn't see in the video if the plateau pieces were installed in the round holes...

    Andy: "So it's a Mazda, with a Honda (engine). What're you putting in the back? 🤔" Smol Ben: "Ford! 😊" Andy (inside): 😩"Car gods, forgive me of the sin I'm about to commit." 😂 EDIT: Yes, I know they work on SuperK and that has a Ford rear end as well.
