It was. At the time it was big improvement on the previous model Granada. I had both. The new shape took some getting used to for some people, but the gear box and performance were very good for the day. Even the coppers who stopped me at three in the morning said they were impressed by its speed and how it handled. I think they were looking forward to getting one themselves because they even sent me home with just a flea in my ear rather than a ticket. Ah, those were good times...........

Funny too the American's never liked the turbo version of our XR4i, man what an absolute stonker of a car just oozing Ford RS but nope America wasn't having it although they swore blind on Fox body cars not knowing it was in fact a British MK3 Escort with different exterior metals lol

No idea on engine size (maybe 2.9) but it was powerful as hell (I was only 10 mind) - thirsty on the fuel as I remember my step dad moaning at this and had trouble selling it for good profit.... ive never seen another at that trim level since so if anyone knows which one im talking about let me know. Both Fords scrapped a long time ago. Volvo 740 estate in Frank's driveway at the start is still going with 300,000 + on the clock.

Interesting detail. You don't see many of them around at all (2023), I still see the occasional SD1 and Volvo. There is a lot of affection in these comments for the Scorpio/Granada but I really cannot recall the last time I actually saw one (Scorpio version). As a young lad in the 80's, and I was into cars, I don't recall any longing or nice thoughts for it at all ! I've always felt more affection for the Mk1 and Mk2.

I've an an '87 RWD Scorpio. 4x4s are even rarer. Mine's on chunky winter tyres, which got it through all the snow fine last year.

@@StatusFIX I think I could have extended to £1k to buy that. It was 1 cyl. down though but I'm sure that wouldn't have been much. Mine was idling like a pig for some time. A new set of plugs and an air filter sorted it. Still need to give it a new dizzy & leads to improve it further.
