Adam , do you still have have a drive around video of the 410 Parklane? It is so smooth and a beautifully graceful acceleration band. In my opinion, they should have just switched all FEs to 410s then. It would have been great in trucks, Fords, and even canned up for a 410 Mustang in 67 with an aluminum intake and Quadrajet 750 with good exhaust manifolds. I think it would have gained some street credibility with the QJet and aluminum intake, some short headers… the 410 may have made the 428 unneeded. 20 extra cubes is good.

I purchased a 1967 Mercury convertible as a restoration project. The 410 had very limited info when I went for basic parts about 30yrs ago until I talked to an old Ford dealer mechanic. Thankfully he explained it was a 390 with a 428 crank. The 410 was a bit of a torque monster . I did some extensive repairs to the car and after about 3yrs of ownership someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse and I sold my 67 Merc Convertible with its 410 V8, power windows, factory 8 track player and factory air conditioning for a nice profit. 😊

Good and bad. Easy access, but every time thermostat housing removed, water finds lowest point, base of dist into block and sits there, gradually corrodes. 351C had the thermostat housing even closer to the dist, and mine was corroded into the block when I got it. Soaked with WD40 made no diff, so I had to split the base of the dist and remove it in two halves/make sure all bits removed, which I did ok. Then fitted a Mallory distributor. Made sure it was lubricated above the O ring though.

That 410 has been residing in my '69 F250 for the past 45 years, been overhauled twice and still propels this 70 year old man's butt into town, for supplies, on a regular basis and still runs as smoothly, and reliably, as ever. I'm a G.M. diehard who loves his old Pontiac and Chevy V8's and not once in my 40+ years of maintaining, hot rodding and rebuilding these engines did I ever wish they had a front mounted distributor. This is because of the multitude of water related problems that my friends who ran Ford products had. Ford was well aware since the 1960's that their design was very prone to water seizing the distributor in the engine, constant issues with corroded points, corroded distributor cap contacts, caps shorting out, rusted springs and counterweight etc. Ford received so many complaints that it led to the rubber diaper boots that many will remember making their appearance in the 1980's. I'll stick with my rear mounted distributors because I've never had a single water related issue with them ever and I've owned dozens of cars since my first car in 1987.

From 64 until summer of 75 I went to every Sunday Event at Mich Ave. My Highlight was sitting in driver seat of Lemans winners when they rolled of trailer when they came home. In 2000 I took my son to Greenfield Village to see that GT-40. I met so many NASCAR and Indy Ford owners and drivers during this period, my Grand Dad always kept up with Racing until he sadly passed. He gave me his SAE plaque with the plastic model of the 65 Indy motor, the 1st "Bundle of snakes", it was 250 or 255 ci with the intake where exhaust was normally. He did a lot of work on the 351 Cleveland heads and always said that was Ford's best motor. Best Memories.

It had the bigger of the two 455's with turbo 400 12 bolt posi, and would literally as they say, press you into the seat until you let off the pedal. While doing so those nice radial tires my dad kept on it would leaving some serious rubber that lasted for years on the streets around where I grew up. My older brother had a 71 SS chevelle, and I was riding with my dad one afternoon coming home from barber shop, and we pulled up beside my brother. Ole man looks around, and I seeing no one was around rolls down his window, and tells my brother 20 bucks says he can't beat his mom's car. He grins at the ole man, says bet. Needless to say the old man beat him at the light, and my brother's 454 SS got beat. I think that they were equal as far as power goes, because I drove both cars, but the SS being a 4 speed couldn't keep up with the 400 automatic is my honest opinion. Anyway my brother had to mow the grass for a month, because that was what I got paid for my little bit of spending money. At least I got my money too, and was told not to tell my brother about it. Ole man never did let him forget about getting beat by mom's Olds, and my brother and I still talk about occasionally, but dad died in 99, and he's missed to this day. Mom still with us, and when her 78 Olds 98 finally wore out, I convinced her to get a lexus so she could drive in the style and power she was always use to having. She still drives her last 2012 LS460, and at 87 years old has to use cruse control to stay around speed limit of 75 mph, otherwise she'll find herself going closer to the centry mark or higher as it rides that smoothly and quiet. It's only got 22,000 miles on it at 12 years old, and I believe it'll be her ride as long as they renew her DL every 4 years.

splitting hairs, technically and primitive by today's standards, it does have electronics... without a capacitor (condenser) points ignition would not work, without transistors and resistors (among other things) there would be no radio. That is correct. When Shelby built the first Cobras from chassis & bodies he brought in from A/C cars in England. A/C went under due to no engines, so Shelby bought up all of their stock & slipped in the 221ci Windsor. The 260ci came out & replaced the 221ci. The first two Cobras were his samples. He repainted the cars to make people think he had a stock. He put a 283 4bbl in one to pitch to GM, But they said no because they did not want competition for the Corvette or other cars in the works. Same for Chrysler, but they laughed him out of the office. He reinstalled the 260ci & pushed his way into Ford executive offices to see HFII. Told HFII that he wanted to pitch his Cobra & had 2 operational units with the 260. HFII got excited & wanted to hear the pitch. Ford took the pitch & gave him all of the factory backing he needed to build the cars. He got a hangar at LAX & went to work. Next was the 289 HiPo with 271hp built to Shelby spec of 350hp. He reengineered suspension & frame to handle the hp & was on his way. When the 427 came out, the car had to be widened considerably & again reset suspensions to handle 500hp. The Mustang came out & Shelby was tapped once again & built the GT350 for 1965. These cars were racers & were just brutally fast beating everything in its class. The 1966's had racer & streeter with the streeters available with all regular options including a/c, special Shelby rally pack & more. The GT40 was initially built in England & failed miserably. Once again, Shelby was called upon to make another winner. With major reengineering & two testing/learning years at Lemans, they learned & won four times in a row, smashing Ferrari because the old man would not sell to Ford. Enzo had his ass handed to him in Europe while in the states, Ford was very successful in stock cars, using the Galaxie 500XL & Mercury Marauder with 427 high-riser. Ford also did well at the drags with Galaxie & Marauder lightweights, but needed a faster car to run with the smaller Chryslers. Thus the Fairlane 500 was on the scene. Stripped to nothing, not even carpet or back seats!! With the 427 low-riser, the little Ford was nearly untouchable. Only 100 were made for race teams & only cost $1. Next was Fords 427 sohc & dohc. The sohc was a screamer & great drag motor with 1x4, 3x2 or 2x4 carbs up to 675hp with 2x4. Sohc was used by such great drag racers as Connie Kallitta, Dyno Don Nicholson, Bob Glidden & more. The dohc had same induction, but nearly 800hp. The Dohc is extremely rare as very few were made for testing. My grandfather retired from the postal service & became a tech support specialist for Ford. He was in the lab in Dearborn when testing the dohc. He said it was impressive & amazing. The sohc was slated for use at stock racing, but that asshole Bill France gave Ford the negatory, although 500 vehicles had the motor. The pussball let Chrysler run the 426 Hemi, but no on the Ford. The 427 high-riser was tweaked & still beat the Hemi may times. Next was the Boss 302/351/429 motors. 1969 was a horrendus year for Boss 302 as Ford ran it as a tunnel port. Ran very poorly, so Chevrolet won the manufacturers championship for the year. Ford roared back for 1970 with an updated Boss 302, thus destroying Chevy, Pontiac, Olds & Buick that year. 1971 was Ford's last year of factory backed racing. Boss 302/351/429 dominated in their classes here while the 427 beast could not be touched in Europe. Ford & Mercury won many races & many championships during that time. HFII & Lido Antonio Iacocca ran a tight program. God Rest Their Souls

EFI makes the same engine last longer. I saw in the 70s on Volvo when they offered fuel injection as option and more recently when chevy didn't make any changes but introduced throttle body injection in 84. Carbs overfuel and knock down cylinder lubrication when cold with choke and also on throttle opening due to accelerator pump squirt. Not as accurate in a lot of other load ranges too. Not speaking to reliability or do it yourself repairability.

As long as all the cylinders have even compression and the distributor is in good working order, you might be surprised by how smooth a carbureted engine with points ignition can be. Case in point the old Mercedes-Benz M1 80 That was used in the fan cars from 1960 to 67 was an exceptionally smooth engine. It was a single overhead cam in-line six as well so it was fairly technologically advanced.

My 410 was pulled from my Park Lane some months ago at 154,000 miles. Heads done (not cheap), pistons and pins equalized in weight, crank needed only a polish, rods at shop for re-sizing, balance, and arp bots, while block goes in this Wednesday. Now some things I notice about your engine. Must be early production as you do not have the closed breather with nipple on the air cleaner that I have. Your engine is definitely a lighter blue compared to mine. You have a 70s' vacuum canister on your distributor. The 4300, in the right hands, can be a great carb. In the right hands would have been Jon at Pony Carbs before he passed away. He did mine, we talked about it on the phone in 2004, and on my car it runs flawlessly like fuel injection. He knew just what internal mods were needed and now they are lost to time unless I open mine up and go looking. Just looked at your story on the 71 Ambassador. I just acquired a 1972 Ambassador Brougham station wagon that Dennis drove down for me. Precious little on that car.

Adam I built a 410 at .040 over. I hot rodded it by enlarging the main passage that ran the length of the engine. I blocked the down passage on all of the passages just above the can with a spill back to the pan and at the bottom of the center passege. It kept the oil flowing and cool all the way back to 5. 1 was priority, 234 had a set of priority cross bolted mains that braced the block and created priority oiling and 5 was also. 418 ci 750 Holley Roller Can. Factory deep sump race pan C6 AER with 2.15 intake 1.625 exhaust valves softens chamber heads on the aluminum medium Riser intake. And stainless steel headers in a 67 Mustang. Fastback 4 speed fully internally balanced with Mallory metal. It dynoed at 618 hp and 625 ft lbs of torque. It was a beast and mechanical noise was non existent, just a lope from the cam. My wife made me sell it because it really was a menace. But I loved building FEs and I have found that building a 418ci engine that makes that kind of power that weighs halfway between a 289 and a 351 and crushes 600 hp with factory parts is one heckuva engine. I never broke it. The FE was the best engine ever made. I got the C6AER heads from a truck the 3 Aluminum cross bolted mains that were able to allow me to wind it up to 7000 rpm’s and follow it Notor Trend story to make it a priority main engine was great 418 ci at 7000 rpm’s with reworked F 100 heads, a Medium Riser intake 750 DP carb. I didn’t spend much money on it, but dang it was a beast! All I wanted to do was faceplate that 351C top loader and have the synchros dog ringed so all you had to do was let off the gas and shift it. 😂I am 63 now. I really want to do it again!

I've had several 410 Merc's over the years. Bought what was told to me 3 390's? Only to discover they were Merc 410's. I wasn't disappointed, Especially when one of them turned out to have 428 CJ crank and rods. All had standard 390 4V heads. After working them they were all really good Performers. The last year was 1968 though. I pulled one out of a 68 Mercury.

I always said that about the 428. I never knew the reason why Ford didn't include that engine in the F-Series pickups back then, smooth low end torque for days, it was the perfect engine for big trucks, eventually 460 filled the gap nicely for two decades though.

I love your nod to Hawaii 50 with your front Aloha State license plate! I always enjoyed the new cars when the new season of 50 premiered every fall when I was back in school and summer was over. I was especially excited with the debut of the 5mph bumpers because the cars looked so incredibly different starting in 1973 and fully implemented by 1974. Talking about excited, the first square headlights gave the front ends a much sleeker look, but I really longed for the amazing array of beautiful front ends once we didn’t have to use those terrible sealed beam headlights. I spent the summer of 1982 in Europe and I was fascinated by the incredible variety of sleek automobiles of all kinds. I mailed home cases of car brochures from visiting many dealerships, those that I could walk to from the many train stations. In 1982 we had no smart or even dumb phones! The Uber wealthy might’ve had a briefcase or car phone in their limousine! 😂😂 I’m so old, 65 on Sunday!

The 410 was a 352, 390 bore, with the longer stroke 428 crankshaft. They were also used in Ford police package cars. The favored motorhead engine rebuild was to bore .030 over and restroke with the 428 rotating assembly. That turned the 352, 360, 390 FE engines into a 416 and it ran great.

@@marko7843 That was the reason that Cadillac introduced the 472 which eventually got stroked to 500 cubic inches. Ford and Chrysler both introduced new engines in 1966 which were bigger than the 429 Cadillac was putting in its cars which was the limit of the engine's architecture at the time.

@@marko7843 Chrysler came out with the 440 engine in 1966, as a luxury car engine, to compete with the big, smooth Lincoln and Cadillac engines. All 1966 and 1967 440 engines were, "factory hand balanced" to insure that they ran super smooth. For 1968, the 440's got standard factory balancing.

Adam, Yes, the 1963 Pontiac Tempest offered an optional 326 cid V-8 that was actually 336 cid. GM brass told Pontiac's head John Z. Delorean that he couldn't offer an engine in his compact Tempest with an engine larger than the Corvette, so it must be advertised as a 326 and the displacement reduced to an actual 326 cubic inches for the subsequent 1964 model years. Hence, this perticular "326" was built only for that one year in 1963.
