By far one of the coolest adverts ever made....

I've never forgotten about this advert. It was so cool to see, sounded lush in the Cinema, and really appreciate the grain here too. Takes me back to 1997 when times were a lot more happier. I still haven't seen Bullitt but this was such a clever idea at the time that really stuck with me.

A classic television advert that was very well done for 1997. The look towards the motorcycle at the end is just the cherry on top

It's not CGI, it's just a Puma driving around in present day San Francisco, with an effect added to the video to make it look "old". Look at the cars in the background closely - they're not 1960s cars, they're "modern" cars (for the day).

@@Davez621 it is CGI in the sense that they edited in Steve from Bullitt and digitally composited him inside the Puma as well as altered the background and exterior of his scenes to match. Really clever and sophisticated for a 1997 commercial. Especially since things like this were only introduced a few years prior in Hollywood movies.

The puma hasn't aged at all it looks like a 2020 motor car even better

The glance Mcqueen gives his old Triumph is fantastic..

The great Terence Steven McQueen. A fairly short lived commercial as I recall but nevertheless, still iconic. Some say Steve would have been spinning in his grave when this hit the air and that he never would have been seen dead in a car like this. Here I speak for Steve myself, "Steve would have had no problem with a vehicle of this kind or size, he made anything that could move go quick and loved anything that moved."

Yes, well said. Put it this way, Bullitt was made in 1968, when cars like the Mustang were common. If you offer any REAL "car guy" (or girl) a chance to drive something that's thirty years from the future, you're gonna do it just out of curiosity if nothing else! That being said, Mr. McQueen would undoubtedly have been happy to punt such a light, responsive car with a keen chassis around town.

The Mustang was thought to be a secretarys' car on release. However that didn't apply to the fastback GT with 390, which was very much a drivers' car, by 1968 Mustangs were a car for anyone as the sales demonstrated. The 1.7 Puma was "fun" and I personally think it was the last to have that old school MK3-4 "Escort" feel, while the Escort MK5 and Focus became soft and-although objectively "good" cars-were quite boring to drive.

@@boilerhousegarage I read an interview when this advert came out with a racing driver who worked with Steve McQueen and he was asked what Steve would have thought about his image being used in this commercial, and he answered that Steve would probably have asked how "much were they were paying?"

Für mich hat dieser Werbespot längst Kultstatus erreicht.Das war schon eine coole Idee Steve McQueen in das Auto zu setzen.

As a lover of all things ‘BULLITT’, the music composed by Lalo Schiffrin for that movie is a huge part of the flavour of the movie and this advert !

Wow I remember that add. Thought it was pretty well made back then, still think it looks good for its age. Only one thing I noticed today that I find would've made it perfect, and would have been an easy fix. The Mustang Steve drove in Bullit had no grill emblems.....any Mustang fan worth half his weight in gold MUST know that, yet no one on the team for that commercial thought it was worth a few more min to remove them for the add.

If only someone in Ford UK thought "Ooo, let's re-do this with the new Puma ST!". But, alas, no.

Absolutely a crappy car the puma all it is a ford ka lol should have used the ford cougar 2.5 v6 much better car or one better the 3 litre Ford Capri mk 3 in black steve would have been proud to drive the legendary Capri back in the 1970s like I said the puma sucks bigtime no power granny car lol :-)
