Thank you Alan, I’ve been able to remove the alternator on my S-Max (2017) by following this video. Very helpful! Just need to refit it! £582 from Ford for a new one without the surcharge (£653 with surcharge).

Hi. How much is it for a replacement alternator from ford as none of my local auto shops sell them. I have a 220amp one. Is there a way to bench test them with a multimeter?

Great video, thank you. Quick question on a 2015 mk5 2.0TDCI, should the volts drop down to 12.6v with the engine running? When cold, the volts are fine around 14.7v but once the engine gets warmer the volts start to drop, first to around 13.5, then down to 12.6v at sit there. Is this something to do with the smart charging or BMS?

the volts should not drop below 13.8 volts....if they go down to 12.6 the alternator is not charging...i have had alternators that charge when cold and stop charging when warm... i would say you need a new alternator

Mine is making a wineing noise around 2,000 rpm both in motion and if rev in park is this related to an alternator issue ?

Do you fit the pattern part alternators on your fleet, or genuine ford? I saved a customer a few quid last week, his forklift wasn't charging and he thought he needed an alternator, turned out the fan belt was just slightly slipping. Made no noise. Just nipped it up and it started charging properly.

I wonder if it's like the X-type Jag. Basically a Ford engine but buying parts from Jag was a lot more expensive than the same parts from a Ford dealer.

If you spray the bottom rubber off that solenoid valve with silicone spray the valve will push back on nicely.

I'm curious as to why you have removed the engine from a mk5?

can be dodgy buying cheap alternators, i would look for delco remy or a brand with good feedback

To change the alternator on my air cooled VW kombi you have to remove the engine, 4 bolts, 3 wires, accelerator cable and fuel pipe. Two screws 2 bolts and the fan shroud and alternator are off the engine. Do the same again backwards to re assemble :)

Working in an exhaust centre, the VW beetle was considered the nightmare job. No access problem but the bloomin' thing never fitted.

Is this the same 2.0 Diesel engine used in the mk4?

Done all this now Having a p2598 error code. Had issues with alternator and changed it. Now getting this. Help pls

Alan, have you started changing the pulley yet? Can you buy the OAP from ford?

hi william, tbh i don't bother changing the pulleys because usually there is not much life left in the alternator at the mileage the pulley would break and as these are taxis its just keeping them as reliable as possible but i do understand the alternator is expensive compared to a pulley..ford do sell the pulley separate yes

@@alan4x it’s for my taxi mate, I’m sailing about on a ferry as my main gig so I know all about keeping it reliable for drivers. Stung with the cracked EGR cooler this week. Clock spring needs done too Al have a go at that myself tho. The joys! I will just bite the bullet, 93k for alternator

@@alan4x Alan taxi due at council this week for inspection, alternator changed today and the noise is still there the driver informs me. Any ideas you could point me in the right direction

@@alan4x one other thing I don’t suppose you have replaced the trim on the quarter window 😂 ford only supply the quarter window as whole which needs bonded. I have the trim it’s just a nightmare trying to re secure it

Replacing an alternator on a mk 3 is easier than that. Do you need to bleed the fuel system afterwards?

no there is a electric in tank pump so it self bleeds

It's strange that you have had zero recalls with the size of the fleet, it's worth checking a few registrations with Ford or via www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-recall

I do wonder what Steve's Taxis will do now they've stopped making (or soon to) the Mondeo..... And Alan for that matter....

I thought you had that blank look because the washing machine had broken down lol

you remove the fuel filter housing...the complete metal housing..then you can get to the alternator easy

Every time I see a " professional " mechanic tighten bolts without using a torque wrench reminds me why I do my own mechanical work. It's probably why my vehicles last 40 years or more.
