Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Steps and methods I tried in removing a very STUBBORN Ford Model A head off the engine! Part 2 of 2. Follow my struggles and learn some things along the way.

You have to lift the head STRAIGHT UP. If one end is higher than the other, you'll find it nearly impossible to get the head clear of the studs. You must raise the head evenly. Can't understand why you haven't remove all the head nuts ???

Hi, I just watched your video, thanks for this series. I have a 1928 A and yesterday I pulled the head off. I used the soft rope in the # 1 and #4 sparkplug holes and filled the cylinders with rope then turned the engine over with a 3 ft breaker bar and the head popped up. I think this method is VERY SAFE. i If the engine runs the pressure that occurs from normal combustion is many times as great on the piston, rod, and bearing material.. Each cylinder produces 10 HP and presses on each piston or over 800lbs of force. Far more than my breaker bar can produce. Normal compression is 65lpsi ( piston sq in is Pi, R x R )) So anyway the rope trick does work and is worth a try. Pete

Hi- I know of the rope trick, some start the engine with the ignition off to turn the engine over with rope stuffed in the cylinders. It is still risky if your head is on the block really tight, like years of rust and corroded studs tight. The comparison of a cylinder firing is not really apples-to-apples comparison, because that explosion within the cylinder when running, the rod, crankshaft, etc. are all freely turning. With the rope being pushed up in the head by the top of the piston, if that head is stubborn, something is going to give- could be the babbitt on your rod or crankshaft bearing, could produce a slight bend in your piston rod, etc. I personally would not risk that type of damage.

Congrats on the removal!! I'm trying to get the head off a 29 AA that sat in the woods 40 years. Wish me luck!!

Put identical lengths of cotton rope in the No2 and 3 cylinder when they are at the bottom and turn the engine with a bar on the Crankshaft nut. When the cylinders come up (they move in pairs) the rope and piston will push the head up evenly. EDIT: Dont gorilla the crank. Gentle pressure.

Some have used the rope trick, but I have read this method could cause internal damage to the connecting engine parts- the piston rods could bend slightly, and/or bearings being put under much more pressure than designed for. This head in the video was so attached to the block, I don't think the rope trick would have worked anyway, because you see in video I even tried using a crowbar at one point! That is about as much or more leverage than a bar on the crankshaft.

@@dougfierro7155 True. I've another head to pull this summer. Engine has freeze damage because someone thought it ok to run with no antifreeze in Canada.... I hope it's not stuck like this one was!

FYI- Filling the cooling system with MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) and letting it sit for a few weeks heads remove much of the issues in removing the heads from flatheads.... an old trick my dad always did dating back to the 50's

I had a hard time getting a head off. I was told by a Model A expert to stuff clean shop rags down spark plug holes with cylinders at their bottom. Then turn the engine over. The pistons compress the rags that pop the head loose. Make sure all head bolts are off when you do this. Also gave each head bolt a quick spray of WD40. I was surprised how doing this was quick and easy.

Hi- there is a similar old trick using rope to stuff in the cylinders then crank the engine over to see if it loosens the head from the block. The problem is those methods of stuffing material in the cylinder heads, if the head is on really tight and won't budge, you risk doing greater damage to your engine internals like the piston rods and bearings they attach to the crankshaft. If that material is pushed to the top of the cylinder by the pistons and the head does not come loose, something has to give or possibly break. A safer alternative is to remove the nuts from the head studs and start the engine without any material inserted in the cylinders. This does not always work but sometimes it does.

I had never taken the head off a Model A before, and after a compression test on my head it was low (3 cylinders in the 40s), so I decided to get a high compression head (not too powerful, 5.5) to provide some extra power when driving.
