Our Ford still carries it's unmodified engine, original brakes and suspension...

    Not sure about the math, but I think 100 kph, translate to about 60 mph, which the Model could achieve on level ground.

And stock only with a strong wind in the back, the larger 21 inch wheels (on the older models not this one), a new but just worn-in engine, and the lighter variants like the roadster. It might juuuust touch the 60, but not even a bit over. A friend of mine has a 1930 Tudor, like in the video. completely rebuild engine, new gears, new bearings, everything mechanical is rebuild or replaced. And we did a top top speed on level ground, with a long acceleration time, with little wind for a max speed of about 91kph, that's 57 mph. That was giving it everything. Mine a 29 tudor, with a leaky valves does about 85 max with no help from the wind. With some modifications, like a higher compression ratio, an overdrive, a high speed rear end you could easily reach 100kph, but stock? no..

    I have a 1929 Packard Club Sedan, 116 horsepower - the fastest I've ever gotten her up to was 65 mph. It will cruise all day at 50 - 55 and the owner's manual says "not to exceed 80 mph", but with the factory 4.08 gears in it, I can't imagine it would ever reach 80! Biggest problem is stopping the thing with the cable operated brakes! Great video, keep having fun with that thing!

    Ford advertised the Model A capable of 70 miles an hour. If the motor is in good tune, the carburetor is set right and you have the timing dialed in it is possible. Got mine up to 63 mph on a "how fast can I get up to" test with a stock motor before the drum brakes and 87 year old chassis crossed my mind and I eased back. Now that being said, with an unbalanced crankshaft and only 3 mains, you start pounding center main bearing when you get past the 45 mile an hour mark. Thus why most now don't push them much past 45 mph. It's not that they can't, it's that folks are wanting to take it easier on the motor in hopes that it last longer between rebuilds/repair/restoration.

    a friend of mine got his 31 coupe up to just under 90 MPH, he said it was terrifying. everything was rattling, everything was popping and clicking, he said the fenders started to wiggle in the wind. took him over a mile to slow down without locking up the brakes.

    The gasoline tank shutoff valve problems are very familiar. Another commenter recommended to thoroughly clean out the gas tank to prevent rust and debris from clogging the valve. This is sound counsel but can be extraordinarily difficult to achieve. There is a “pencil filter” available that was not supplied by Ford. It is available from Snyder’s, Brattons, and other Model A suppliers in the U.S.A. It is inserted into the top of the valve, going vertically into the fuel tank. Besides the fine wire mesh to strain out the rust, it also prevents fuel from being taken from the very bottom of the tank. Instead it draws from the fuel slightly above the floor of the tank. Ethanol in the fuel should not have any negative effect on your Model A fuel system. Ethanol can cause problems if a fuel system has rubber or plastic parts that are not compatible with ethanol. However the Model A system is 100% metal and some also have a small glass sediment trap. But no plastic or rubber. Ethanol does have a potentially negative side effect though: it is hydrophilic, that is it easily absorbs water from the atmosphere and this water can cause accelerated rusting inside the fuel tank. The best prevention is to drive your car regularly to use up the gasoline. Or if it will be immobile for a number of weeks drain the fuel and use it in your modern car. I hope this advice helps.

    Hallo . Ein schönes Auto , gut klingender Motor und ein gefühlvoll schaltender Fahrer. Prima !. Ich hab selbst nen 29er Tudor mit Glasmacher-Motor und langer Achse (354) und 21" Räder . Der Motor hier im Video hört sich so zufrieden an, dass ich gut 100kmh eher nicht glaube (was sagt das navi???) . Ich fahre relativ flott aber eigentlich nie über 80kmh. Wir fuhren schon EINMAL auf einem Gefällestück AUSNAHMSWEISE 100kmh laut navi und hatten dabei laut Drehzahlmesser 3000min-1. Dank feingewuchteter Kurbelwelle mit Ausglreichsgewichten und Gleitlagern mache ich mir da keine Gedanken ABER um nichts auf der Welt würde ich mit eiem Originalmotor über 2800min1 fahren und so auch niemals 100kmh erreichen . Zu der Frage: Wie fährt es auf "the highway" ? Wir sind auf 100.000km max 100km Autobahn gefahren und dass nur, um irgendwelche Städte (Frankfurt) zu umfahren Abo ist raus. LG

    My dad owned many Model A's. He said, a couple he owned would do 70 mph. Which, according to him, registered only up to 70 m.p.h.

    Con Sobremarcha puedes andarlo a mas o menos 50mph. O sea 80kph. Sin forzarlo ya que es sabido que la temperatura se la gana al sistema de enfriamiento . Es recomendable poner un panel de radiador con una corrida de tubos mas ....

    What did this guy do to get the car up that fast. Other you tube says 50 mph just over 80 kph. Did he rebuild the engine to more moders standards. Run spark control full advance. Put in an overdrive. Put in a higher (lower numerical) rear axle.

    I got mine up to 61 mph one time and the fan blade flew apart and put a big dent in the hood

    As an addition for the experts: The inlet manifold carries the German FK (Ford Koeln) sign. We could not find it in any other place on the car. But we wonder what is behind. Does anyone know?

    Hey - the "T" is sooo grand!!! The "A" still has the mechanical brake rods. NOT what you need for speed over 80 kph...

    According to my elderly relatives now all dead practical cruising speed was 35 mph for these cars in their day. 108 kph which is 66 mph is nearly twice the Model A rated cruising speed. How did this guy get this car to go that fast?

    The subject car is a Model A, 50 to 55 mph all day long was common even back in the day. You have confused the Model A with the Model T in which the average cruising speed was 35 mph.

    Could you do a similar test with gps speed on your phone? I find it very hard to believe your car passes 100 km/h with stock engine, no overdrive, standard differential and the 19 inch wheels.

    You are right, we only used the speedometer because the GPS is in the phone we used for the video. Also we do not want to try again, what Rolf (see below, use translator) mentioned is absolutely true and we knew about it. The moment when I took back the accelerator my feeling told me, there would be A LITTLE more speed possible. But vibrations from engine and the unbalanced wheels told me to reduce speed at this point (lifting the accelerator a little, so the pistons still got some pressure against their own mass). Testing other vehicles we witnessed what can happen if the unbalanced wheels find their natural frequence, not sure if this happens on the "A", but if so it might end fatally. At the moment our roads are full of salt, so we cannot drive - but we promise to check the speedo at 80 kph in spring!!! 😉

    @@TempoE200 Since the wheels of the A are quite large compared to modern cars, they don't rotate as fast. Unless your wheels are very unbalanced, it should be fine. The reason i'm saying this, is because unless you tuned your speedometer exactly, it's likely going to be off from true speed. It's not a very precise instrument anyway compared to the modern digital ones. My A Tudor is not the best balanced one but has a decent engine, all stock. only gets up unto 85kph when i hold the gas full open. I suspect it'll do 95 if the engine was fully balanced and machined, and it has the bigger 21inch wheels. but I doubt it would ever do 100 unmodified, let alone 105.

    They can go this fast... not good for it; probably revving close to 3K when peak power is around 2300 rpm

    ​@@allentoyokawa9068 With a normal differential, it would make about 2600 rpm at 100km/h With a fast differential it would do about 2300. Your sentence doesn't really make sense tho. If peak power is at 2300 rpm it would never even reach 3k... Since it doesn't have the energy to get there. (if not going down hill that is) A stock model A engine can't reach 3K because the valves start floating. It's kind of a natural limiter. Which is also why a stock Model A is very unlikely to touch the 100km/h without wind or slope helping it out. Maybe they could rolling out from the factory. But any wear will shave off the top performance pretty quickly. And then even, because the power falling off above 2200/2300 rpm it'll crawl faster very slowly. Not like you see in the video where he pulled up to 100km/h right after entering the main road.

    @@DrTheRich 2300 rpm is just the peak power, the red line is higher, even if the power is falling it is still enough to go this fast... look it up, top speed is around 105 km/h. I had a Taurus SHO that made peak power at 6100 but could rev to 7100 before hitting the limiter... It still accelerated pass 6100 rpm, just not as fast, plenty of vehicles are like that. Btw I said close to 3k, not at 3k...

    I hit 65 mph for a couple seconds. Hanging on for dear life! 65 mph = 105 mph. Not for normal driving. 😮

    Das macht man nicht mit so einem 92 Jahre altem Fahrzeug, weil der Motor OHNE (!) Öldruck läuft. Der braucht artgerechte Haltung, also nicht über 70 km/h. Wenn die Haupt- und Pleuellager verschlissen sind, wird's richtig teuer. Der Motor hat keine Lagerschalen, die man mal eben auswechseln kann, sondern gegossene Lager, sogenannte Babbitts.

    Technisch hast Du natürlich Recht. Glaube nicht, dass wir den immer SO fahren, das stellt ehrlich gesagt auch in Hinblick auf Bremsen und Fahrwerk (von der katastrophalen passiven Sicherheit gar nicht zu reden) schlichtweg eine Gefährdung dar. Kurzzeitig steckt dieser Motor das mit Sicherheit weg, auch zu "Lebzeiten" wurden diese Autos nie geschont. Stell Dir mal einen vollbeladenen "A" im Gebirge vor, volle Drehzahl in unkundiger Hand im 2. Gang... Das Warmfahren nehmen wir IMMER sehr ernst, auch haben wir (wie es damals tatsächlich praktiziert wurde) ein faltbares Pappstück vor dem Kühler um die Motortemperatur optimal zu halten. Und: Viele Fordfahrer bestätigen, dass es für diese Autos nichts Tödlicheres gibt als das typische Oldtimerherumgezockele nach Feierabend für 15 Minuten mit kalter Maschine mit 40 im 3. Gang...

    @@TempoE200 Ich habe selbst einen A, der seit den letzten vier Jahren fast 39.000 km gefahren wurde, aber eben unter artgerechter Haltung. Die Pappe vor dem Kühler hab ich auch, damit das Gerät bei niedrigen Temperaturen überhaupt noch warm wird. Den Verschleiß vom hinteren Hauptlager kann man am Ölverlust des Lagers festmachen. Wichtig ist aber, dass man wirklich alle 800 km Ölwechsel macht. Wenn ein Haupt-Lager wegen zu hoher Drehzahlen kaputt geht, ist es das Mittlere, weil sich die Kurbelwelle dabei ganz leicht durchbiegt. Bei dem geringen Lagerspiel ist das ganz schlecht für das Hauplager. Weiterhin viel Spaß mit dem A ... !

    @@rolfhofmann2029 Fast 10.000km im Jahr sind eine Ansage - Hut ab! Da kommen wir lange nicht hin, aber es hat uns erstaunt wie der Motor durch regelmaessige Nutzung immer "sanfter" wurde. Bevor wir ihn bekamen, hat er offenbar sehr lange Zeit gestanden, das "Oel", das wir aus dem Motor abgelassen haben, erinnerte eher an fluessiges Teer. Damals entwickelte der Wagen unangenehme Vibrationen, vor allem spuerbar in der Lenkung. Nach vielen Kilometern und diversen Oelwechseln ist er leise und komfortabel geworden. Und klar, Reisegeschwindigkeit so um die 70. Ploetzlich versteht man auch, wie eine Fahrzeuggeneration spaeter Schlagworte wie "Vollgasfest" und "Autobahnfest" in der Werbung Einzug hielten. Dir allzeit gute Fahrt!!!

    @@TempoE200 Ich würde empfehlen, beim nächsten Ölwechsel, die Ölwanne abzuschrauben und zu reinigen. Normalerweise wird in diesen alten Motoren bewusst unlegiertes Öl gefahren. Dieses Öl bildet in der Ölwanne eine dünne Schlammschicht, die den fehlenden Ölfilter ersetzen soll. Daher muß die Ölwanne alle zwei, drei Jahre mechanisch gereinigt werden. Modernes Öl, mit Reinigungszusätzen, sollte man nur fahren, wenn man genau weiß, dass der Motor von innen 100 % sauber ist, sonst löst man jahrzehnte alte Ablagerungen, die dann in den Ölkreislauf kommen. Meine Vorgehensweise ... !

    @@rolfhofmann2029 Vielen Dank - dies ist ein Hinweis, den ich beherzigen werde! Nach dem Kauf habe ich mich durch die ganzen amerikanischen Foren gewuehlt und bin bei unlegiertem 30er Oel gelandet. Aber die Wanne hatte ich nie ab und wie das Oel nach der Uebernahme aussah...stimmt! Noch eine Frage, vielleicht hast Du einen Rat: Unser Benzinhahn (Reproteil, den alten habe ich noch) sperrte nach einiger Zeit nicht mehr richtig ab. Habe ihn zerlegt und "eingeschliffen", was auch funktionierte. Jetzt nach kurzer Zeit das gleiche Problem, sieht drinnen alles weisslich korrodiert aus. Problem des Materials mit E5??? Koennte der Alte (der auch durchliess) besser sein?
