Ford Focus: water in the boot / trunk (mk3, 2011-2014)

Ғылым және технология

Water ingress into the boot (trunk) is a major problem with 3rd generation Ford Focus (mark 3 pre facelift: 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and probably also post facelift). This video shows you how to diagnose the root cause and rectify it. This involves removing the rear bumper and, if the problem has existed for a while, some of the interior upholstery too. However it's not at all difficult, and can be completed quite easily in an hour or two.
NOTE: I wouldn't now recommend using plain silicone sealant, as I did in this video - it only lasted around a year before leaking again. I would recommend something like Sikaflex ebt. Another viewer recommends Tiger seal.
For a "quick and dirty" hack / fix, see my more recent video. Essentially, pull out the bungs, pull out the insulation, and walk away:

This video, showing how to remove the rear bumper, was recommended elsewhere: • FORD FOCUS REAR BUMPER...

Hi Andrew, specifically signed up to pass on my eternal thanks for this video.Ford dealership quoted me £600 to source the leak. Fixed it in less than an hour, both sides leaking into both vents. Would not have been able to do it without your tutorial, again many thanks .

Lifesaver Andrew! Just spent my entire Sunday taking out the interior and carpets in an attempt to get it dry. Rear vents all sealed up now so fingers crossed it has solved the issue. What a complete an utter balls up by Ford… thanks again

After searching for a solution to the exact same issue of getting water in the spare wheel well and finding the side panels in the boot getting wet, searched KZread and came across your excellent video. Having removed the bumper moulding , found the vents were loose and followed your advice on how to rectify the problem. I did manage to dry out the insulation over night before refitting the vents (into a generous bed of clear silicone), finally reassembled the car. After several days of torrential rain I checked and both sides are bone dry. Result !! Thanks for making this video Andrew.

Your video is still doing great things for people Andrew. My wife has been back and forth to garage spent £140 on new door and body seals as thats what garage said was the problem. I haven't had time to look myself. Came to put the seals on today. Thought I'd just check KZread first and bam. This is identical to her problems. I've just done the job. Whole lot was flooded. Thank you so much for taking time out to do this. Helping alot of people. Now let's hope she can get a refund for the deals 😂🤞🤞

Really glad to hear that Jamie. It's incredible how many people have this problem, the least I could do when I realised there weren't any good videos explaining it was point my phone and talk a bit while fixing it up. Oh, and if they don't accept the seals back, don't worry - they'll fall off soon enough and you'll be glad for the replacements! Another "feature" brought to you by the fine accountants at Ford.

Hi Andrew, thanks very much for posting this video. Had the very same problem and have been racking my brain trying to sort it out. Just this morning I have been stud next to my car with the hose pipe trying to source the leak with no joy. Saw your video, went straight to the rubber plugs, (water was slowly dripping from them and they were damp,) pulled them out and got plenty of water down my sleeve, " never been so happy to have wet sleeves". Thanks again I now know what to do next on a dry day. Rob

Great video, just did mine and waiting patiently for rain to check it’s worked! Couple of tips - use a hairdryer to warm the clips up, it was 1 degrees c when I did mine and I couldn’t get the last clip off the big vent but a bit of heat sorted it for me. Also put the foam inserts on a spin cycle in the washing machine - it gets 99% of the water out with no damage then just stick it on a warm radiator to finish off 🙂

Thank you so much for this video. I inherited the car from my parents, which Dad bought from the Ford dealership in 2015 with less than 14,000 miles. Don't think Mum and Dad ever had a problem but can't ask them as I lost them both within the next few years :( The car wasn't used much. I had been wondering why there was so much condensation. Noticed mouldy fabric and then found water under spare wheel in boot and cleared it out ( thought I'd spilt something!). But found more water there today. Rang dealership who said it would cost me about £500 ( 'ball park figure'!!) and that they would keep my car for a week and strip everything out to find out what was causing it (he didn't sound too happy when I suggested it could be design fault ...) .But they MUST know about this 'leak' issue if we've all experienced it. So VERY happy to find this video. THANK YOU!

Hi Andrew Thank you so much for this guide it was invaluable, I would not have known where to look, other than around the rear lights and that area. Both sides were full of water, I only noticed the water ingress when I had a puncture and went to get the spare and noticed the jack was covered in condensation. Never have I been so glad to get a puncture, luckily for me the water ingress didn’t amount to much just a soaked under spare tyre padding and small amount of lower side carpets in the boot and a damp carpet under the nearside passenger seat. This would have got much worse if I hadn't acted today, your tutorial was very clear and gave me the confidence to carry out the work, also used another guide I found on KZread showing me how to remove the rear bumper without which I feel sure I would have damaged the bumper retaining clips). Hopefully this will have fixed my problem; I will wait and see how it is after the next lot of rain. What with this and the door seals hanging off all 4 doors within the first 2 years (which was also not covered by Fords Warranty), I used Evostik contact adhesive on those, two very annoying and avoidable problems.

Thanks Andrew for this video. I too have just found the 2 litres of water in my spare wheel well & a quick google search lead me to the issue of water ingress, I just wasn't sure where. Found the drain plugs etc and my drivers side plug hole was full & the white material felt sopping wet. Thanks to your video I know how to cure this annoying problem as I couldn't believe the dampness in the car, especially on a morning as it was like rain on the inside of my windscreen! Thanks Andrew. Had condensation problems for over a year and twice water in rear tray. Found this video and a few days ago was delighted to get water poured down my arm when I pushed the bung in! Have stripped it all down today with the help of your video thanks. Several other videos miss out one or more of the bolts under the wheel arch. I couldn't move the small vent but it was well sealed to the body. The larger vent was cleared not tight to the body. I struggled but but did manage to extract it after heating all the plastic with a hair drier so that I could bend it. Silicone applied to back of seals; refitted then a bead run all round over edge of seals. tips: Wheel arch fittings: worth taking the lower 2 out first as the wheel arch liner then peels back easier to access the top one. The amount of force to pull bumper out sideways off body after all fittings released was more than I expected. Make sure top plastic clips are released then pull the edges next to wheel arch out to side - goes with a bang!.

I’m gobsmacked this is a common issue with Ford - have had mine for almost 4 years, 15 plate, not a single thing wrong with it, until I noticed 6mths ago mould growing in the boot. Low and behold took the spare wheel out the boot and there was a bath tub of water casually sitting in the spare wheel well. Thought it was a fluke - maybe I’d spilt something - have discovered it a 6mths later again! Fortunately I don’t think it’s in the passenger seats - flooring is dry. But the boot is soaked. Think this is going to be an expensive problem to fix - so glad you’ve videoed this though so I can explain the problem, thanks!

Thanks for your video, it gave me the confidence to try this fix myself. Managed to get all the vents off without breaking any by lifting the square vents clips with a screwdriver then as you described shoving my hand in to loosen the larger vent. Used tiger seal on the vents so hopefully this is a long term fix 🤞

Did this today as weather was ideal. Brilliant how to, would have definately struggled without it. I dried the foam pieces out in the tumble drier aswell. As for removing the bumper i got caught out nearly, so on my 2014 focus on each bumper side there were 2 screws holding the bumper to the inner arch lining and one hidden behind the lining which secures the bumper to the car body, so dont forget this one! Also 2 screws at top of the bumper and two clips at bottom of the bumper, which will need a pry tool if you dont want to damage them. I also disconnected the reverse sensor plug. Following day pulled carpets out of boot, base and side, also pulled sound proofing out slightly to dry out. Lifted the carpet in the rear and front footwells, the rear and front seats had to come out for this . Best way to dry carpets in situ was to fold carpet and foam up and stick a heater and dehumidifier in there to get it bone dry or could run the cars heater & AC I guess. There must be 1000's of focus's out there suffering from this. Ford, you really need to move on from the 80's!

First spotted this when our windscreen was soaking wet . Originally got the air con gas and pollen filter replaced. It seemed to do the trick then the wet returned. The sunglasses holder was dripping water so I removed that and power washed the car (no dripping) . 🤔 Opened the boot and the boot was soaked in the wheel well and the near side panel was soaked too . I found the boot hinge was letting in water but I am going to do these air vents too . Thanks for your video .

Good video! Although, once dried out, simply drill drain holes in the lower most corners of the void. Do paint to protect the metal work though. This simply allows the water to drain out at the same rate as it goes into the void. I agree, It is a very poor idea and your fix is good. Although remember, there are various ways in which the water can build up in the voids! Thus, if you don’t create a drain, the same thing can occur! It’s only an empty void and drain holes make no difference to the structure of the area. I’m a mechanic of 34 years and the amount of modern vehicles that suffer with water ingress never ceases to amaze me! That’s all makes and models too! In my time, the amount of things I’ve had to re engineer is astounding! 😂😂😂😂 great in-depth video, it came up top of the search for all to see!

Hi, thank you for this video. I bought yesterday a ford focus estate 1.4 2005 which was freshly valeted and after coming home I found the carpet in the luggage compartment mouldy, so I threw it away. There was water on the replacement wheel and the guy was telling me this was from cleaning the car. I suspect the friendly valeting was to disguise water in the boot, but watching this video took the fear out of it and now I am going hunting for water leaks.

If you bought the car from a dealer, I would be returning it immediately. Even from a private buyer you have some rights if they are obviously lying about the state of the car. Failing that though it's not too hard to fix. Removing the bumper isn't hard, there are plenty of other videos that show you how to so I didn't include it in mine.

Check the bungs. They're easy to get to, even without lifting the car. Pull them out with a pair of pliers. If you get a wet face, this is 100% your problem.

Thanks so much for this. We’ve had our 2014 Focus since almost new. Its our fourth and none have given any problems until now. Two or three weeks ago it blew its first bulb and a few days ago I noticed a damp smell in the boot and discovered about 5mm of water in the spare wheel sump. I assumed I hadn’t refitted the tail lamp properly so refitted it and secured it a little tighter but still there was a light sweat of water around the tyre sump a few days later. Followed your guidance and opened the bungs and sure enough they were full of water. Just ripped out the lining and binned it before it started smelling. Going to just leave the bungs out to see if the cavity can cope with our usual sunny winter Glasgow weather. 😂 Pretty disappointed by this despite it being almost 7 years old. I see Vauxhall have similar issues with their doors and the official actions by Vauxhall dealers is to remove the bungs and leave them out too. We’ve had bother with Audi, VW, Vauxhall and Renault over the years, feel like we’re running out of car brands to trust. 😂. My wifes just bought a nearly new Kuga so will be sticking with Ford for a while yet. Anyway a massive thanks again for your videos, your guidance and help. Its been hugely appreciated. 👏

I’m planning to still keep this Focus for another year or two. Its just to get me to work and back and other than this its been perfect. Don’t know what i’ll go for. Certainly won’t be anything from the VW group, their brands are worse than Ford. We had Mercs at work and they were dreadful too. Time will tell how the wife’s Kuga behaves. 🤞

This problem plagued me last year and I had to keep pushing off going to the mechanic because I needed the car for work and everywhere I looked made it seem like I'd need to replace all the interior fabric. Small bit of water issue throughout the year but nothing major until I got into the car this afternoon flipped the back seats back to normal position and they were all drenched. Going to try this method over Christmas and that will hopefully sort it all out. Then I'll just have to focus on getting rid of all the water stains 🙄

Very good video. I used to own a 2013 version of this car and whilst I never had this issue I have known of others who have. I will also mention these vehicles suffer from poor quality adhesive used to stick on door trims which can also come away and allow water ingress, so that is also worth checking. Previous generation Focuses have also had these issues of water ingress particularly through the boot area, you would have thought it would have been addressed by now.
