Ford Focus ST Boosted with ATP Bolt-on GTX28 Turbo Upgrade

At Vivid Racing here in Arizona, we use a Mustang all wheel drive dyno. At the time of the test, ambient temperatures were about 100F and we also run 91 octane. Because of the heat factor, we did mix a liter of octane booster to bump us up to 93 octane. Even though this is a FWD car, we chose to run it in AWD mode to give it a real world scenario and avoid any potential computer faults and failures from having only the front wheels spinning. When the car came in, we did an immediate baseline with fresh calibrations. The car with all the bolt-ons and a Cobb Stage 3 91 octane did 232 awhp and 299 ft/lbs of torque. We then did our own VR Tuned ECU Flash on it to compare to the Cobb Accessport and was about the same with 234 awhp and 309 ft/lbs of torque. Now with our baseline numbers and 4 days of work, we were able to tune the car and dyno it with the new turbocharger from ATP.
The car made MASSIVE amounts of power and torque over the stock turbo. From 3700 rpm and on power was made with peak power at 5700 rpm of 70 whp. Torque stayed at a consistant gain of about 65 ft/lbs from 4500 rpm to redline. We actually had 1 more revision to this tune done to give the car a bit more boost and take care of the fall off at the top end RPM. However we ran out of time and the owner had to hit the road. With this revision we guestimate at about 315 awhp at peak redline. Since this was run in all wheel drive, our Mustang Dyno is typically at a 20-25% drivetrain loss. This puts us at about 400bhp or a complete gain of 150bhp over a stock Ford Focus ST.

for everyone asking about the blowoff valve ,its agency power diverter valve ... and for those talking about compressor surge , its a recirculation valve ,so no surge ... what your hearing is the air recirculating until throttle is opened

Cedric Dorcely better make sure your getting all that pressure out legit or them turbo fins gonna be fucked up one day if it's channeling backwards through your intercooler pipes because the bov can't get it all out or snaps shut to early I had that problem with mine needed to shorten he spring on my bov

Thats surge, anyway you put it. Flutter is surge, period. It should make a PSSSH or WOOSH sound, a solid sound, no flutter like this car in video. I hope this guy fixed the flutter issue?

bov sounds like the old greddy ones.....sounds like it's fluttering and not venting. I only like using the factory bpv on my evo but when I started pushing 30+ psi the only aftermarket bov that not only worked correctly and sounded good was the turbosmart bov.
Tempted to upgrade the turbo on my fiesta st now :)

Any idea what the injectors duty cycle was at this point? Were they almost maxed out? Cheers
@Shemar Baker You can find it thru most aftermarket vendors. Or directly from ATPTurbo. It's the GTX2867, I recommend ordering it with the .86 A/R you won't be disappointed. I also suggest getting an External WG - TiAL 38mm (which is a direct fit for this turbo setup). Any questions let me know, I've learned a lot about the ST.

Are there ant issues with the focus stock electronic diff now that the mechanical LSD is installed ?
What diverter valve is that and is there an install video?
Have you upgraded the RMM? It just looks like a lot of movement under the hood.
Im surprised at the loss of spool i want a 30/71 but if even the 28/67 spools late that sucks. Im wrx vf52 317/323 17psi cobb surgeline mustang dyno. I like having all my power in the middle not sure loss of spool is worth top end.. i hit full boost at 3k ewg and lots of other jazz

Its not a bov making this sound guys. Its the gt28 surge. Its a recirculating bov with the surge noise. Sounds awesome.cant get that sound on a stock turbo. Need a upgraded turbo.

Agency power part AP-UNI-150 is not for a Focus, only Audi, VW.
Was that compressor surge or a blow off valve?

I did like how ford kept the space in SE models for the turbo instead of making the engine bay smaller. Literally behind the 2.0L engine is a huge open void... Imagine the possibilities, twin turbo? Oooooooo

I know I'm 8 years too late, but the very first thing you should upgrade on the Focus ST is the intercooler, even if you're not planning to go big turbo. The factory intercooler just doesn't cut it, and is very prone to heat soak.
Can i put a 2017 st turbo in a 2017 sel ford focus ??

On the Focus ST & RS you should never go big turbo without upgrading the intercooler. That's absolutely necessary. The factory intercooler is not only prone to heat soak, but it lacks the cooling capacity a bigger turbo would necessitate.

“Awd pull” meaning the dyno is configured to have all four rollers spinning to simulate driving on the road. This ST is still fwd

So what about injector upgrade? 340 whp is about max on stock fuel. This thing did not look like it moved very fast in the end. If I spent this kind of crazy coin modding, it'd better be able to hold off a 2016+ stock Camaro SS or 2018+ stock 5.0.

Agency power only makes diverter valves for an RS is that the one you guys used on the ST?
Just a quick question. If the St is a fwd and the dyno is awd. Is the dyno making the rear wheels move? I read earlier comments and it said to make it more realistic.

08TurboSS mentioned something about the Focus ST Stock motor not being able to handle more than 350bhp for very long. I sure hope he was referring to lb/ft and leaning toward the clutch? There are many ST owners that can definitely attest that claim. I've said some "uneducated" comments because I was unsure; but if you haven't played on the tuning field with this car, don't guess and think that you know when you don't. There are tons of ST owners out there that have loads of bolt-ons, and supplementals (i.e. W/M, External Wastegates, etc.) and making some pretty darn impressive power. There will always be arbitration with Dyno numbers (Mustang, V-Dyno, or Dyno Jet...) the only real performance number you will ever have is how it performs in the REAL REAL world and not a number on a sheet or in someone's head. If anyone wishes to raise their ST platform to another level, then talk to the distributors/tuners of what your own personal goals are and make it so. Or work it in your own garage? If you're going for a bigger turbo, you're going to need addt'l items - just know that ahead of time. This car has addt'l changes and performs quite differently since this post.

It's not they used the awd mustang dyno to be thorough. Read the info they put on the web page in description. It's a good read.

No we had already upgraded the clutch to Clutch Masters Fx250

That sound is not a good one. It's boost surge blow back. And the sound is GAYYYYY.

Its not a blow off valve it is a bypass valve.. Different setup in the focus. The stock focus comes with an installed bypass valve that takes excess pressure and pushes it back into the intake manifold instead of blowing it out to the atmosphere. Just google bypass valve and there are plenty of diagrams to show the difference.

For whatever reason, Vivid Racing has no idea what they installed. I have been reading their install notes and they made an embarrassing 317whp on the GTX2867r and that is a guess because they ran out of time. Here I was thinking the owner actually installed these parts himself!!! probably explains why he wont post his car on FST.org

1983minigtr probably go read though the blog notes and see about the awd drivetrain loss and 91 octane. That car had a good delta change, the "number" is not as important as the gain from the parts.

It's not a BOV. The air in the turbo it's forced to go back thru the turbo making that noise

The diverter valve is a little hard to see in this video, as it sits pretty snuggly low in the engine bay.
is that all wheel drive? Noticed all wheel spinning or was it an AWD dyno?
