Ford's Fiesta has always been affordable and great to drive. But state of the art? It's that too in its current seventh generation form. Beneath the smart styling lies some clever user-friendly technology - and cabin quality that'll make down-sizing into one of these less of a chore. This is how you right a best seller.

Background
This Fiesta may still be a small car but these days, it thinks big in almost every way, starting with styling designed to make more of a statement in the supermini segment. Under the bonnet lies an impressively clean and frugal range of petrol and diesel units, which includes the brand's latest mild hybrid EcoBoost Hybrid tech. Plus there's a more up-market cabin than you might be used to from a Fiesta, plus safety technology that can automatically brake the car for you, even at night.
Ford has also broadened the appeal of the range with an 'Active' Crossover bodystyle, plus variants more specifically aimed at customers wanting luxury and sportiness. And as well as all that, the brand reckon that it'll be even more fun to drive than its predecessor. This is, in short, on paper at least, a thoroughly well thought out piece of supermini design. But will it be enough to keep Ford at the top of the sales charts? Let's find out.
Driving Experience
Variations on the Fiesta theme may come and go but before driving any version of Ford's definitive supermini, there's one thing you almost always know for certain: that it'll be a great steer. This current generation model is 15% stiffer than its predecessor and both front and rear track measurements are wider. The engineers tell us that the chassis offers 10% more cornering grip, supported by Electronic Torque Vectoring Control, which enhances the driving experience by applying a small amount of braking to inside wheels to assist traction and stability when cornering. Braking distances at 62mph are reduced by more than 8%. There are freshly developed five and six-speed manual gearboxes. And rear disc brakes feature on models with engines developing more than 100PS.
Ah yes, engines: you'll want to know about those. Ford is gradually introducing its mild hybrid 48-volt tech into this car but for the time being, the conventional engine choices also remain, which means that the range kicks off with the brand's 1.1-litre Ti-VCT 75PS unit which comes only with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Nearly all Fiesta buyers though, opt for the three cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine though, usually in base 95PS form (it's 100PS if you specify the optional auto gearbox). There's also an uprated 125PS version of this same engine. The 1.0T EcoBoost powerplant can also be had in mild hybrid mHEV 'EcoBoost Hybrid' form in 125 and 155PS forms, complete with Ford's latest 48V electrified technology. The minority-interest 1.5-litre TDCi 85PS diesel unit continues too. The SUV-style 'Active' Fiesta variants share all the usual mainstream engines, but the top Fiesta ST hot hatch model gets its own 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol unit developing 200PS.
Design and Build
If you go by the maxim that if something looks right, it is right, then you'll probably like the look of this seventh generation Fiesta. As before, it's offered in both three and five-door bodystyles, plus an estate and all three variants are tidy pieces of styling with evolutionary styling and a bolder, wider front grille. The side profile is more settled and less wedge-shaped than previous generation models, combining with 71mm of additional body length and 12mm of additional width to give what Ford hopes is a longer and more premium appearance.

Another very detailed review a lot of other so called reviews could learn a thing or two by watching yours well done. I haven't owned a ford since the sloping rear windowed 105e Anglia. I've driven a few though, comparing a Fiesta with a Rio 10 years ago I took the Rio, no regrets no rattles and no probs unlike a 4 year old Fiesta I drove a few months back. A garage mechanic of long standing told me last year when I was looking to replace the Rio said steer clear of Ford eco boost engines in any form and supermarket petrol. Also I did notice my humble 1.4 Rio did make less of a fuss when asked to tackle some of the steep hills in North Devon than a 125 eco boost focus. The Rio was not as fast going up but it kept pulling, but I'm afraid the Focus did not like it. Sorry went on a bit there.

Another excellent review - by far the most informative on the net - especially like the emphasis on the mechanicals. Not so sure you're right about the appeal of the higher-powered 6-speed gearbox versions though - I would bet that most supermini buyers (like me) will think 100bhp is more than enough, and it's certainly difficult to see the point of a 6-speed box in a car that is unlikely to be bought with long-distance motorway driving in mind - and I'll bet very few will bother paying extra for a mild hybrid version of that engine. The sales figures will tell!

Yes it is. The best super mini to drive and own. 208 diesel and ibiza 1.0 115hp are the second best and Clio is the most versatile. The Yaris hybrid is the most economical in town. Nice review!

That's a mk8 Fiesta. At 17:01 the picture is a mk7.5
What do you do with having no spare, call breakdown to bring one?
I think Ford make the most real world cars. This Fiesta is the best car for people living in an urban environment. It has low emissions, it’s relatively spacious, it will be reliable, it won’t cost much to insure, service or fix. Buy it with the B&O sound system for a happy stress free life!

@@davidsanderson2960 I think that is the updated MK8.5 you are talking about. John is correct. I have a MK7.5 & a MK8 FiST. OSV seem to have it wrong.
The true GENIUS of the mild hybrid Ford Ecoboost engines is you get to buy a 6 speed manual gearbox AND have slightly better economy with some clever Hybrid tech. It sure beats having to drive a full Hybrid with auto as the only transmission option: it's soooo boring! I'm an American and would NEVER choose an automatic. For me, it has to be a Manual as nothing else will do. Ford makes excellent manual gearboxes that make driving a real pleasure, not a chore. Which is why I really want Ford USA to reintroduce a fun-to-drive manual transmission hatchback into the North American market. There is still a market for Ford's stick shift cars here, and a Mustang isn't a practical year-round daily driver to commute and be able to haul a small family. C'mon Ford US we need you!

Ford really messed up their dual clutch autos until the latest Fiesta/Focus models which are (finally) excellent.
Im really not a fan of turbo three cylinder engines. Yes they are more economical but the power delivery from a four cylinder turbo makes them much nicer to drive, no dropping off and surging every time you change gear.
How do you manage to remember such myriad detail? As you review so many cars you'll probably not be able to tell me, please, if you detected ANY squeaks, creaks, groans or rattles when you put the the Fiesta through it's paces but I'd be interested to hear about them if you do recall such cabin nuisances...
It's a MK8 not a MK7 (with a MK8.5 coming out next spring - 2022). later on it's also an ST 'Edition' model not 'ST Line edition X' (the azura blue/agate black car) which has superlight wheels on the ST only and are black not rock metallic (just like on the orange performance edition which came before it). The way it was explained makes it seem a little misleading. I am sure that wasn't your intention. Exhaustive review!

I feel exactly the same since I want to buy a Ford hatchback for my next car and there are NONE available!? Let's all do our part - call or write Ford US Customer Relationship Center and tell them what their American customers want. If we all contact them, maybe they'll realize it's a profitable business decision to bring the new Fiesta ST 6 spd manual transmission to the US/North American market. @@danielleroux6490 Problem is that on the average very few people are willing to fork out 30k on a small hot hatch. Ford is also losing out their small car market and that is the one of the many reasons that they are leaving the north american market.

@@2damaxmr2 Well, if all of their potential buyers are contacting them and telling them what they want, they will see it's going to be a profitable decision. It may not be as 'huge' as their F-150 sales, but still. Come on, Ford is an American company, and they're not selling their best cars (the Fiesta and Focus hatchbacks) to their own people?! That is just ludicrous! It's a bad business model that will bite them sooner than later. I hope with the new management at Ford US they will have a change of heart. But they need to hear from us, their customers. Let's tell them what we want and they'll have to listen up and take notice.

@@2damaxmr2 the new Fiesta ST is selling for under $25,000 USD in Australia (31,990 AUD). That's a performance bargain. Ford would sell a ton of these in North America for that price!
Eer the current model, you know the one your reviewing is the Mk8 not Mk7.

It's a Gen 7. Ford UK marketing screwed up the Mark numbers a few generations back by giving a facelift a Mark designation, so the Gen 7 = Mk.8 in the UK only.

why would you wonder that? This new Fiesta isn't the previous generation with the Powersh%$t DCT automatic that had issues in the U.S. They got rid of that POS transmission. Plus, the previous 5 speed manual worked just fine.
This model is a MK8 not MK7
Why do you keep calling the car a mk 7 ? It’s a mk 8.

I am really torn between the active in tdci form that I can find very slightly used and the ST, but for a much higher price. The heart screams ST but the head tells me to take the chance for the active. In your channel you have driven both, so what is your opinion?

Another superb review. This latest one looks too much like a mpv. Not keen on it's looks at all . Why do the rear windows slope upwards, this creates an ugly look.

The ecoboost engine is rubbish. Noisy, not relaxing to drive. Wouldn’t trust one to last long term.
