Ford F150 Explorer 2000 2001 2002 Overhead Console Repair

Has your overhead console (temperature and compass) disappeared? Mine dimmed out and I was determined to fix it on my own.
Instead of paying $130 at the local Ford dealership, I did it for free!
This repair will work on similar model years and models (Explorer).
You will need a slot and Phillips screwdriver, a T-10 screwdriver, and a soldering iron with some solder. Don't have a soldering iron? Here is a great quality unit available on Amazon: amzn.to/1mm1PGS
Est. time: 45 minutes.
Enjoy!
Edit: Pictures from some Ford forums can be found here: www.f150online....

I used what I learned from your video to repair my 2001 F-350 DRW w/Liariate package. The Overhead console trim was a little different to remove but I basically the same on the repair process. I could see that one of the resistors was slightly raised up off the printed circuit board. With a hot soldering iron and a small wooden dowel, I lightly pressed down on the resistor and applied heat from the tip of the soldering iron. This allowed the existing solder to reflow and it was immediately obvious that the resistor was back in place. I then plugged the card in and checked that it was functioning. I want to express my sincere gratitude to you and all the KZread community such as yourself that take the time to post these videos saving the rest of the DIY community that take the trouble to search for your content. I have learned so much from all you folks.

EXCELLENT VIDEO!!! My console had been out of commission for years. I never bothered to even try to get it fixed because I'm a gal. Gals let these things go. Then I ran across your video by chance and thought, "I can do that", and I did. Your directions were great. I had not trouble at all and the display is working like new. Thank you so much!

Excellent video. My temp and compass quit working a long time ago. I disassembled it just like he shows in the video, and looked at the components under magnification and found two that had cracked. With the touch of a soldering iron and the addition of a tiny bit of solder mine is now working perfectly. Thanks!!

This worked great on my 2001 Expedition. The console is much longer than what you have in your 150. On the Expedition you need to first remove the Phillips screw in the sunglass compartment. Then starting at the front of the console pull straight down to get the retaining clips free. Then you need to shift the console forward to remove it from the back bracket. (It will make perfect sense once you see it.) Then disconnect all 3 wire packages and go solder. It's a REAL easy fix and I can't thank-you enough for posting this video.

Time to thank you 11 years later. It works! This was repaired on a 2009 E-150 Van. My circuit board had two 510 resistors so i did 4 connections just to be sure. Also because i just kept pushing the selecter bar I fractured the black frame near the selector bar extends. I repaired the crack by using a wood burner and melted a slab of zip tie across the whole crack on both sides. The extra thickness did not interfere with reassembly. Your crack may vary. So ease up on the smashing of the select bar.

I started the repair 35 minutes ago. Removed, repaired and reinstalled in less than 1/2 hour, including about 5 minutes trying to find my soldering gun, and getting the "stuff" into the basement workshop to complete the repair. The display works just fine. Thanks for the great information, Dave!

Well, mine has not been working for years now. Years ago I took it to my local mechanic and they told me that it would be a couple hundred dollars to replace it, so I just let it be broken. I did what you said and I just added solder to the first one furthest to the left and didn't touch any of the others and it seems to have fixed the problem. All of them looked good to begin with, but I just started with that one and popped it back in an it started working. Thank you very much!

Nice video Aaron.. My 2001 had been intermittent for the last couple years so like everyone else, I searched KZread for an answer. MY circuit board had 2 of the 501 resistors. I used an ohm meter to see if there was an issue with the 501s. When I touched the one next to the one you soldered it basically fell off. Like everyone, the soldering in a tiny area is not the easiest thing to do but I got it accomplished. I've been to the f150 online forums & they are very useful. I have solved a few other issues on my truck from the forum. All in all, it worked after I reinstalled the module & decided to give you the kudos you deserve. Thanks again for posting! Great Job!

Thankyou very much. I just bought my 2001 Ford F-150 from a dealer and the console didnt work. I looked for a replacement readout and only can find refurbished ones, no new ones. So I watched this video, tried your steps. The first time, I too was hesitant about my soldering skills, so I barely sobered it. it did work, but for only a day or two. Took it apart the second time and re-did it, this time with more solder. It has been atleast a few weeks now (2-3 months now) and the readout still works just fine. Thankyou for your help.

Re: 2002 Ford F150. You were spot on about the PCV hose not being the right diameter. In fact, while searching for it on RockAuto.com I quickly discovered the hose installed in my truck wasn't a PCV hose at all but just a length of hose. The proper hose assembly has a hardened liner inside the hose to keep it from collapsing. I promptly ordered it for less than $20 bucks and it'll be here this Friday. Thanks again Brother. You're on point, as always.

I'm about to have to do this and thank you tons for the information. I just wanted to add for anyone watching who may not know about soldering, that there should be residual solder on the resistor still and it only takes a little bit. Best practice is to apply solder to your tip and clean it on a wet sponge and then apply a little more so that there is excess to the solder tip. Then apply the solder tip to the solder joint. That should be sufficient amount to reestablish the connection.

Thanks for the info on repairing this thing. My mom has a F150 Lariat she bought used and the compass / temperature gauge never worked. In my case, it wasn't the SMD resistors in front of the display, it was one of the tiny SMD transistors behind the display which was a pain to resolder. The whole board looks like it didn't run through the reflow oven at the factory properly so I resoldered most of the legs on every part I could get at after the initial fix to make sure it doesn't happen again. For anyone attempting this, I recommend using 60/40 lead solder. The ROHS solder that's supposed to replace the old lead solder is junk because it gets very brittle and is prone to cracking. It's funny that "ROHS solder" is supposed to reduce hazardous substances, but the flux needed to flow the stuff is more toxic than the flux used in old leaded solder and the lead component itself.

I fixed it! I'll have to admit though, my first attempt to solder the first 510 resistor was U-G-L-Y. It came off too, completely. I thought it was over at that point but I childishly soldered it back. I only did the first 510 due to my horrible soldering job. Was afraid to touch anything else until I saw if that may have fixed it or killed it entirely. Plugged it back in and it WORKED. Thanks for the video and comments. $14.00 for soldering iron and solder from O'Reilly's Auto Parts and a few minutes - saved me $45 for a replacement.

I had two with loose ends, which I soldered, and now the unit works as it should...check the ends after you solder to make sure the solder fixed to the resister and circuit board (as previously mentioned, flux will help). Be careful not to solder across other circuit lines

I just fixed my 2001 F-150 overhead console TODAY 7/2022. One of my 510 resistors actually fell off, and was lost. I had to research the "chip resistors" to find that 510 is actually a 51 ohm resistor (51 followed by zero zeros, for 51) and the 181s are 180 ohm resistors (18 followed by one zero, for 180). I popped off the remaining 510 resistor and measured it, to be sure, and it measured 50.8 ohms. I replaced both 510 chip resistors with two 1/4 watt, 51 ohm discrete resistors (Green (5) Brown (1) Black (0 zeros) Gold stripes (5% tolerance)). I soldered the leads of the two new resistors onto the little pads where the chip resistors were (tedious, and not pretty). Put it all back together and it worked, eeee haaa! Not sure how long it will last, since apparently it somehow got hot enough to melt the solder on the original chip resistors, with one falling completely off. Also, I found that the original chip resistors were rated at 1 watt and my two regular resistors are rated at 1/4 watt. We will see.... And thanks for the GREAT video!!!

Just did it and it worked perfectly. Extremely easy to do. The only thing I would also mention is that when you are heating up the existing solder on the relays that you CAN dislodge the relay. Don't worry though, as long as the relay is NOT touching another circuit, it will be fine. Doesn't matter if it is flat against the card.

I haven't had to break it open yet, but my guess would be that there's more loose components. Does the radio still work and the display doesn't?

Yes, the radio is fine. The display flickered for a few years, getting worse as time went on until it stopped all together. It came on again for a few seconds last month. I found an aid, like yours, on that subject, but the electrical board shown is completely different from what I have... so I will continue to search.. Thanks!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Yes it was exactly the same chip that was loose. I touched it with a screwdriver and it came completely off. So in order to reattach it I had to build up a row of solder on each end to solder to. Thank you again sir..you have done me a really great service. God bless you my friend.

Thank you so much! I did it at work in literally 21 minutes and it worked! While I was there I also disconnected the dimming wire when the headlights are on. I always felt it was too dim for my liking. Again thanks for sharing!

This fix worked perfectly. Actually from start to finish about 20 min. Great tutorial video. It was the identical resistor lifted off just as David demonstrated. A cold solder joint mass produced. Thank you, David!

very helpful video, when i removed my overhead temp/compass the resistor was completely missing. who knows where it went and how long ago it fell out. i trimmed a small piece of copper wire strand off and soldered it in, in place of the resistor and it works great. this may be helpful to anyone that runs into their completely missing as well.

I be darned, it was the exact resistor you pointed out, dangling loose. Lacking a soldering gun I used electrical tape and taped it back in place, and we'll see how that does. Again, thanks for posting.

Wow, I cannot thank DavidGalipp enough for posting this video. My compass/thermometer has worked intermittently for several years. I have had my truck for 16 years and got so excited when it would spontaneously work and then it would stop working again for another year! But, this soldering did the trick and now it works great. Two of my chips were loose and that was the problem! Thanks again!
