Ford F150: "Check Fuel Fill Inlet" Message On Dash
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video, I have a look at a 2010 Ford F150 that has a message on the instrument cluster saying, "check fuel fill inlet." A.K.A., the gas cap on this capless system. It also has the engine light on with a P0457 (EVAP Gross leak) code stored in it. Before you go throwing a smoke machine on it, make sure and have a look at the purge solenoid. -Enjoy!

@8:05 you hooked the purge valve to a train horn???? magical lol
With all these newer vehicles going to these "capless" systems, it's great to see a video about how a purge solenoid can be there real problem versus going on a wild goose chase looking back at the tank/filler neck. Great video.

great diagnostics. had the same issue with my 2010 Fusion. very intermittent P0457. when the 'tap-tap' fixed it i changed the purge solenoid and the code never came back.
Congratulations on breaking the 200 thousand subscriber mark. I've been with you from the beginning.
A perfect video to show how the understanding of system operation simplifies and expedites the process of troubleshooting and repair.
Outstanding job of explaining it for us. You're getting better all the time. Thanks Dr. O!

Greetings from Alberta Canada Mr. O, keep up the good work . good to see a mechanic that really cares and goes that extra mile . you have a sub out of me !
Nice work, thanks for explaining the system. I am UK, and I think we do not have these systems, but always good to learn. Keep up the good work, you are appreciated.
SMA vid to end the weekend properly !! Thanks Eric
I could seriously watch this channel all day keep up the good work!
Good job Eric. Love the content as always. Just had a catastrophe with my jeep. Replaced hub bearings and I boogered up the threads on the axle nut on removal. Love rusty parts. Got it changed but it cost me an axle.
Oh damn, the two handed reach around! Eric has skills! 😆
Great Diagnosis. Thanks for taking time to teach us.
Very informative as usual. That said, this is the kind of video where you (Eric) employ reasoning and technique involving several parts of a system that may be slightly mysterious to viewers, in which a quick white-board-of-knowledge would double the interest and education. I for one have not been entirely clear on how the gas tank, evap canister, the purge valve and intake manifold relate, and what part does what during what phase of operation. And how that does or doesn't relate to systems that seem to have a dedicated vacuum pump to test gas tank leaks.
Ford always puts the sensitive parts in the hottest spots I think this by plan

It would be great if there was someone as honest and helpful as you are in Calgary Alberta. SMA rocks.
I thoroughly enjoyed the information. To see the data when it was working normally was helpful.
Every tools got a hammer side! Nice video as always. 👍
Auto engineers, it should be mandatory to watch your videos, so they can really learn how to buld autos, Thanks for your time and knowledge Bill N
Great stuff as usual! I mounted and balanced 24 tires yesterday - that time of year again. I'd rather be diag'ing a FoMoCo EVAP leak! I was also handed a spaghetti mess of a plow wiring harness I need to hook up, then figure out from a box of parts what is needed to make a plow work ... a plow that isn't on the truck. Guess I can imagine it ... 😁 Got some figuring to do ...
Sunday night SMA. That's pretty cool!
Thanks for the video. My truck’s been giving me the same message. Now I know what to look for.
Eric, Another great video and diagnosis! Its great that you have the experience to zoom right in on that purge solenoid when us mere mortals would be left guessing if it was the purge solenoid, vacuum line, fuel inlet/gas cap, or even vent solenoid (see you've taught me well). SMA#1 God bless Paul
Awesome easy test for direction. Thanks for the short little video
Love watching your videos this just helped me on my 2012 F 150
Had a sticky purge solenoid on my wife's Corolla like this, I took a gamble and opened it up. Found the seat and pintle were both sticky so I cleaned em and put it back together, problem never came back!
I just had this show up on my f150 2010 with the crappy triton engine. fun times. Day later... mine was the problem as well, no vacuum. I was happy to see that my Blue Driver tool was able to tell me the vapor pressure and command numbers in live data. Thanks Eric!!

@@crisprtalk6963 what do you mean by crappy Triton engine I have a 2010 F-150 with a 4.6 l V8 Triton engine and it is great I'm over 220,000 mi and have had no engine trouble whatsoever.
Nice one Eric. Thanks for sharing!
Almost time to come out with south main auto repair automotive DVDs with all of the videos you have created..everyone will want to buy them
Brilliant job!! Thanks for the video!!
My 2010 F150 with the 4.6 seems to be built quite different. Nice one Eric 👍
Good to see on a Sunday night!
hey, love your channel. Just found you recently. I live not too far away east of Corning. I'm going to call for an appt and have you look at my Tundra. I have an intermittent check engine light every time it rains. EVAP codes saying it's a gas cap...which it isn't. I also would like to have the underside sprayed to resist rusting and stop whatever rust is already there. Talk to you soon.
Eric O., in the know! Another good show!
As always. You the man!
Thank you for all u do !
excellent evap diagnosis
good testing on the purge...new phasers.... bank 1 cam and rockers too
Great video Eric
You are about as famous as one can hope for. From another automotive site with a Denali on the rack: "I'm not going to Eric O this thing".
Oh my!! You got one on Ivan!! That's pretty funny. How ever, I'm not pulling him off of you!! Lol
Thx ! I just saw this popped up in my scree. Thx
Been binging through your videos since last night. Playing them in my sleep, not saying that you put me to sleep but I've been dreaming of broken Dodge's since I just got a free rusty Dodge Dakota from New York (I live in Florida btw and I'm not used to working on a rust bucket) and I'm getting ready to do an overhaul on it. Lol
As usual great video
Good information thanks
Awesome job bro.
EXCELLENT JOB WELL DONE 👏
Thanks for the video.
Another Great Video.. Thanks Eric O....

Sticking your hand with the needles is a great video
I wonder if the o2 sensor code pops up because you just forced those fuel gases into the intake without the truck doing it itself. I wonder if it starts a sequence when it uses the evap system where it knows afr eill go to crap so ignore the sensor until it's done with the test. By doing it manually you're probably testing the solenoid itself and not commanding a check thus the truck reading rich rather than normal 14.7:1 or whatever it is for that truck on idle. Regardless, great video!! I like how people like you explain things so we can save time and money chasing gremlings! Keep it up bro!!!! Watching from PR!!!
This video saved me a lot of headache and money
Very good info sir
Ive been binge watching your videos and I try to diagnose the problem in the beginning of the videos before you find the problem and so far im 1 for 30. Not great
BFH (big hammer) to the rescue! LOL Thanks for the video.
Light is flickering and dimming working great so is the scan tool working great
You are the best my friend
Hey Eric -- quick question. At the beginning of the vid, when you commanded the purge solenoid on (with the scan tool) and did not see a corresponding reduction in tank pressure, you concluded that either the scan tool was not working, the vacuum line was plugged or the the purge solenoid was bad. Couldn't a faulty fuel tank pressure sensor also cause the symptoms you were seeing? What allows you to rule that out right away? Thanks again for your channel, Eric. Best one on YT bar none!!!
I did see the light dim during the test for sure.
thks that nice work
Quality diag. Thanks
Nice video little fella...
The magic of Eric O sweet 😀🇬🇧
my wife thinks im crazy i i wach at least two a day , keep it up
Great video, would dousing the purge valve with carb cleaner be a fix, since it's sticking but otherwise operational?
Thanks for the Sunday night vid Mr.O, gave me something to watch other than having to watch The Walking Dead with the Mrs.

You need to come to the Sema Show this year. Your buddy will be there.
another thing that can cause the evap code is a dirty seal in the capless fuel fill neck. i have had this happen on my 13 explorer and my 2010 f150. used the out of gas adapter and WD-40 to clean and refresh the seal. the explorer required the use of a rag as well which is pretty difficult to do but it beats replacing the fill neck.

Do you clear the codes after or let the computer do that on its own? Also i’m getting P0442. Thank you
@majornofun1503
Жыл бұрын
@@Sheeeeeeeeeeeeiiitt cleared the codes and waited to see if it set codes again. you really have to jam the fuel funnel in there like 90 times after spraying the WD-40 a bunch in-between thrusts. It might also be the purge valve though if it doesn't clear after 3 full drive cycles and you have a good seal at the inlet.

Great video as always I've been a subscriber since almost day one and for the first time I have a question for you I have a problem with my 1996 Lincoln Town Car 4.6 L with 74,000 miles on it I had a surgical procedure done the car was parked for a couple of months my daughter went down to start it for me since the car lives outside and believe it or not it's not rusted LOL I live up here in Rochester New York well the question I have is when she went down to start it it was completely dead I mean nothing no dash lights no nothing and there was plenty of fuel however when she went to start it with a jump box that I have which puts out a thousand Peak amps it's not one of the little ones it's the regular size like your blue one it would crank over and start but then die it did this several times and still will not stay running is it just the battery is too dead to take a jump from just the Box and should I switch to having somebody jump-start me with jumper cables and a car that is running? I'm so confused LOL I am 65 now and have several doctors appointments coming up I need your help buddy what could be wrong thank you in advance
I had the same problem with my Acura TL, I would get the "check gas cap light " and it would randomly have a hard start because it would get stuck open which would put to much fuel vapor in the combustion chamber.
Hey Professor O' I want one of those SMA zipper hoodies:)

Would it be safe to assume that a malfunctioning purge solenoid would eventually lead to a plugged charcoal canister and therefore a vent issue? Having trouble getting gas in a 2011 F250 6.2 chassis cab.

My Hyundai Santa Fe throws O2 sensor codes from the purge valve. Spent a weekend chasing codes and found the clamp to the purge line was not attached. hooked that back up, cleared codes, it's been fine ever since. no parts required.
U can just check the seal on the fuel pump it's most common reasons for a leak..they get old and won't have a snug fit
Why the heck did they think it was a good idea to have a capless system?. This isn't NASCAR...sometimes I just don't understand the thinking of automotive engineers. Making vehicles that are planned to crap out. Good for the Dr. O biz. One of Ford's better ideas??
