I have a 2005 F-150 FX4 5.4. I bought the truck new with 25 miles and now have 325k miles. I had to rebuild transmission at about 290k, but engine is untouched. Even has original coolant hoses, water pump, starter and alternator. Replaced throttle body seven years ago due to electrical failure. I’m towing my 2020 19 ft travel trailer as I’m writing this. The truck doesn’t burn oil and gets about the same mileage it always has. I was an automotive machinist when I was a much younger man and no one will ever convince me that the 5.4 is a bad engine.

If your engine has that many miles ... change the oil cooler immediately... when it fails it fails internally ..... (and it will soon with your mileage) ... When it does oil pressure will overwhelm the coolant pressure and your radiator and engine coolant passages will be filled with oil... When it happens you will get 0 oil pressure with no knocking and you will hear gurgling in the dash as oil pumps through the heater core ... The oil cooler is above the oil filter .....

@@aclary81 the oil cooler is a heat exchanger between the coolant and the oil... When it blows internally the oil goes into the coolant side... oil pressure is near 40 psi and coolant is 18 psi .... once the oil pump runs out of oil then the coolant will pump back into the engine

Just did the intake elbow replacement. I’m 72, & spendin’ several hours under the hood of a ‘98 F250LD wasn’t the easiest. Tough twist & roll around, but after a disconnect of a few hose & plug-ins I was able to get my hands shoved in far enough to grab the line. Had to cut the stuck remainder of hose off the nipple with a box cutter blade. Typical p0171 & 74 codes. Chased it around for awhile before I realized it was an upstream air problem. Doh! After that I changed out the PCV just to see, since it hadn’t been changed out for 2 decades. It was still good! Then it was a contortionist act & found the elbow was cracked at the bend. No big hiss. I had sprayed with soapy water but never got a rpm change! I was about to break down & buy a smoker, but fortune smiled on me! Really enjoy watchin’ y’all, LOCO!!!

The older 02, 03 V10 one ton vans had that crappy pcv hose that would tear near the throttle body. Using the "WDS" (that's right! this was before the IDS) and a can of Chem Tool and listening, there was the leak. The idle roughness was so bad it shook the van and thankfully the ladder roof racks were tight or there would have been two expensive ladders on the floor! One new upgraded PCV hose assembly later and a very smooth, happy running engine. Good one Brian!

Brain your the best ford tech. I've ever seen. I worked for Ford 40 years ago. Back then just had a analog voltmeter to check trouble codes. I didn't like variable ventura carburetors and feedback carburetors. Thank goodness when they came out with OBD 2. I'm retired now. But still work on my own cars. Lost interest in anything made after 2015. To much Redundant stuff on newer models. Just my opinion. Thanks for all your expertise.

06 Expedition. I'm still chasing a vacuum leak. The brakes feel soft until I hit the pedal more than once, then they come right up. That vacuum line with the split, when I bought my Expy, that line and the one on the passenger side behind the battery were as flat as a paper straw! I replaced those lines, plus others, but there's still a leak somewhere. No codes, though, except a Cylinder 2 misfire I still haven't found (not the plug, coil, injector or wires), which makes me wonder if the intake is leaking in that area. I recently bought a scope camera, so now I can look at that booster line behind the block as well. Keep up the good work. These 5.4 3Vs are a learning experience!

I've got a 2004 f150 4.6 three valve that keeps throwing the same code p2197 or p2196.. last year I replaced an O2 sensor, when it threw that code 1 bank 2 I think it was.. in hindsight I should have replaced them all, but it was fine afterwards and thank you by the way for the tips on how to make that job a bit easier cuz it worked like a charm when my husband said it wouldn't make a difference, well we proved him wrong, so thank you for that... shortly after that I had to replace the mass air flow sensor cuz it started dying out as I came to a stop or slowed to turn a corner.. fixed that and it was fine til recently and started acting up, engine shake, running crappy, crap fuel economy ect.. I don't hear a hissing sound though, but that doesn't mean there couldn't be a vacuum leak I suppose even though it's a 4.6... my OBD II scanner threw the p2197 and I'm not sure what the heck is going on now but thanks to your channel I do have some other avenues to check out.. I'm also currently working on my 2005 f150 5.4 three valve so really appreciate your channel more then you know, it helps me a lot... My husband teases me about you being my go to guy for problems with my trucks.. he'll say oh you better hurry up and run to your U Tube Ford guy cuz something is wrong.. lol.. he shouldn't tease me like that cuz he may need our help with his 99 4.6 two valve one day which is the engine I'd like to have because I'm not a big fan of the 5.4 which is an ok engine I guess as long as you take meticulous care of them! Thanks again for your educational tips and tricks! I appreciate them more then you know!

the best thing I ever did for AC DIY was buy a multimeter that could test microfarads on start capacitors. It pays for itself the first time you use it. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone - 240V AC is no joke, but if you have a general knowledge of electrical principles and safety procedures, you can fix your own start capacitors. Pull the power disconnect and short across the terminals on the capacitors before doing anything though.

Many get by with 5w20 but if you want it to last forever a 30-40w is the way to go. Some extra MOS2 is great for the 3v as well 👍

While changing spark plugs the cheap plastic 1/8”vacuum line to the fuel rail reg valve snapped like a pretzel in three places. Is there a source for pre- made vac harnesses or am I stuck with generic hose and tee type fixes?

Hi. I watch and learn from your videos all of the time. I really appreciate the info. I have a 2008 Lincoln navigator that's giving me P0171 and P0174 codes along with transmission code P1719 and the wrench symbol on the dash. Any idea if they can all be related or what it could be? When I clear the codes the vehicle runs good for 15 minutes then the codes come back.

Man, I've learned so much from Watchung your videos for the 5.4l 3v Fords. I recently was changing the vct's in my truck. I put everything back together and took the truck for a test drive. It ran so much better than before I chanthe vct's however my font driver's side brake calipers began getting hot amd smoking. It was driving like the brake was locked up or pulling to the driver's side. I put it in neutral and it rolled just fine not like the brakes were locked up. Got home and locked at everything I worked on and nothing is out of place and looks correct. Would you have any ideas of what I may have to check or put my hands on that may have messed up the driver's side front brakes? Thanks in advance.

I have a 2010 4.6 with just shy of 350k miles. Have this code but a friend of mine said they could be the intake runners that are not getting engaged by the motor. Had to leave town so can’t take the truck to his place to correct concern. It seems like it is not something difficult to do as you only need to remove intake manifold to get access to it. But would you recommend replacing the entire manifold?
