I'm a car repair business owner and the first gen Expedition is the best SUV ever built by anyone including Ford. If you take car of them you could never live long enough or drive far enough to wear it out. My 1999 Eddie Bauer model 2WD 5.4 liter has 350,000 miles on the original engine, transmission, rear end, A/C compressor and fuel pump. The suspension has only ever needed front ball joints and 1 set of KYB shocks. In the last 100k miles all I have needed to do is change the oil and change out the tires. At 21 years old it is still beautiful in and out, even the headliner is still perfect with no sagging anywhere. On top of that it has never ever been on a tow truck and the check enigne light has never come on in 350,000 miles.....the original exhaust system and catalytic convertor are still in place.......no way I would ever sell this truck,

@@berniceperry8898 The first thing you should do is replace all the coils and spark plugs and torque the spark plugs to 25 foot lbs so they don't vibrate loose and blow out, destroying the threads in the head. On the motor oil, use only Mobil1 10W30 and change it every 5,000 miles. Make sure you keep the antifreeze full and clean.......you won't live long enough to ever wear the truck out. Also, check the upper and lower ball joints on the front end and make sure they are tight. the originals

By far the best ones ever made. The 5.4L 2Vs and 4.6L 2Vs were some of the best production engines ever made, aside from the spark plug issue back then that was cheap to fix. When they got rid of the 5.4L 2V for the 5.4L 3V, it was sad. The 3Vs were the worst V8 Ford made in the 21st century, that I can think of.

I have a 1997 one with the 5.4. It has more off-road capability than modern SUVs. Unlike a 1500 Tahoe or Suburban of the same vintage, it got the ford 8.8" IFS which can take a locker. It also has more utility than modern 'lifestyle' pickup trucks, because everything but the seats and the roof liner is indestructible plastic. And once you fold the 2nd row seats down and throw out the 3rd row, you get a cargo area of 82" in length, 55" in width and 39" in height, while the hatch opening is 35" tall. Also, despite it being all steel body and frame, has the same weight and carry capacity as the 'modern' aluminum pickup trucks,

He is very wrong in alot lot of ways I have a expedition and it has the same options just about and even some the suburban doesn't it have. It has a better ride than alot of modern vehicles and some options I haven't found in new vehicles and not to say the suburban is a bad vehicle they are very just what I have seen between the two the expedition is more reliable and has just as much or more to offer.

A great well built vehicle but man is that steering wheel ugly. The worst looking one in my opinion. Ford should have put in a stronger motor back then. Even so both motors will last hundreds of thousands of tough miles. I have a 2011 and it has 250k original miles and runs and drives well. If you have a big family this vehicle or the extended version once offered is a must especially if you vacation with your vehicle. The Sequoia and Suburban are the only real competitors. The only downside is fuel mileage. A mini van like the Pacifica and Sienna are great alternatives and offers awd. Vehicles like this can be overkill if you don't tow anything. If space practicality and fuel mileage is a concern then I'd pick the aforementioned. If you tow then this vehicle with the others mentioned is a great choice.
