Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid Is The Perfect Electrified SUV. For Some.

Pure electric vehicles don’t work for everyone. The Ford Escape plug-in hybrid does. The concept is simple enough, charge the 14.4 kWH battery and it’s fully electric for 37 miles. After that it defaults to a regular hybrid with an EPA rated average of 40 MPG. And the Escape PHEV is a useful crossover that does the chores well. Fun to drive too. But if you want all-wheel drive with your plug-in…. maybe visit a Toyota dealership for a RAV4 Prime or get Escape’s fancy sister, the Corsair Grand Touring.
Tom Voelk takes a look at a fully loaded Titanium model to find out if it really goes 37 miles on a charge and what the real fuel economy is. And while Ford calls the 4th generation Escape, I see it as the 3rd gen (the “2nd generation” is a heavy mid-cycle refresh IMHO).

    For a lot of people the plug in hybrid would be a better answer than a full EV. In the small town I live in there's exactly 1 EV charging station (at the electric company) and we are far from alone in that respect. Even in more populous areas it can be difficult to find a charging station, especially one capable of fast charging. With the plug-in hybrids you can enjoy electric driving for much of your travels without concern about finding a charging station.

    Just got one that is 2 years old. Of the 1200 km I have driven in a week 850 are electric. Averaging 3L per hundred kilometers or over 70 mpg US. This is 5 times better than the SUV it replaced. Love the safety equipment. Might not hold up like our 2007 Prius but it was $24k cheaper than comparable RAV4 prime on the used market. That will buy another car if this doesn't last 15 years. And the fact you can plug it in a regular socket and charge over night (10 hours or so) is great as well.

    I live in the Canadian interior and we get a long snow season here. I've never once felt like I needed AWD in a FWD car - only ever desired 4x4 on RWD vehicles. 4-wheel ABS and FWD is all you need in the snow. We're so spoiled by the overinclusion of unnecessary features that make exorbitant pricing seem more sensible, to the point that people now have fear of missing out on a feature they won't benefit from unless they're trying to take it rallying or turn it into a dune buggy. It also builds lazy driving habits. At the same time I buy all your points about interior comforts vs something like the Tucson (once again, we're whining about features that didn't exist a few years ago, like wireless charging and heated rear seats), even though they're marginal unless you're downgrading from a Maybach... I get that car reviewers aren't the type of people to only buy a new vehicle once every 10 or 20 years, but it would also be nice to compare it to, say, a 2012 Escape EcoBoost. You could also compare the Tucson to its 2017 counterpart...

    I would argue if you put another brand logo on this there would be more fans of its looks. Plus give Ford credit for minimizing piano black in the interior. Overall packaging, use of space, and functionality is tops. Hopefully this has better steering feel than the gas models? And just a smidge more attention to the interior would really help. Corsair is actually overdone so, so share some of that cash, Ford accountants.

    Evil twin is always the best part of the review, haha. I think Ford should consider their packaging if the top model is still not offering stuff that Hyundai/Kia and Toyota are in their plugins. Vented seats, heated back row, wireless CarPlay should be standard on a top trim. Perhaps they have a Lincoln twin that has all that stuff and they just want to save it for "luxury."

    A fine car. I rented a top spec gas engine model that I think was a 3-cylinder. For nine days around the breadth and length of the SF Bay Area, it was sufficiently peppy, nimble, comfortable and the safety bells and whistles were appreciated. I was impressed, although, yes, the interior is relatively plasticky. I eventually purchased a brand new 2021 top spec VW Jetta for less than $30k MSRP (no ADM), which I consider a German Accord for Civic money, with a fine interior. I'm still not sold on the plug-in proposition; I'd prefer a regular hybrid. So I'd seriously consider a regular hybrid Ford Escape ... OR (!) a Tiguan HYBRID (it's coming soon).

    The Sorento does have a much nicer interior. At the higher trims it seems like a slam dunk. At the lower trims the Escape starts $12k cheaper and is a great value proposition for $28k after tax credit. Ford also does offer a real spare tire in addition to the flat repair kit, but it's optional not standard.

HOV lane is like the Autobahn-especially at night so looking at more real-world ( C & D 75 mph tests) EV's lose way too much range from what they claim ( insert fanboy comment here)-so this is the absolute best choice for my situation after 130,000 miles in my Clarity.

    I think it is kind of funny people are so worried about AWD. I live in a cold/winter climate and I have been driving a Toyota Prius for 8 years without any need for AWD. I will take my $15k savings over the RAV4 and its extra 5 miles of electric range and use that to help me buy a full electric in 5 years when there is better infrastructure where I live for charging. Oh yeah, the review forgot to mention ford actually lets you order these...as opposed to Kia or Toyota where you just have to hope your dealer will get one in stock someday...and that they don't bump the MSRP by $5k.

    Tires are very important but there are advantages to AWD. Perhaps you live in a city used to dealing with snow. There are areas that don't have extensive snow removal service because it's cost prohibitive. Seattle / Tacoma / Portland being a few. Any good dealership will check what they have coming and let you reserve. And if you don't think there are Ford dealers marking up vehicles significantly, I suggest visiting a few.

    What would be a great idea for PHEV car manufacturers is to have the possibility to upgrade or change the battery after a couple of years (5-10 years). We own a C-Max Energi 2013 the car is great but the battery lost more than 60% of it's energy. And we can't do anything about that! We try living the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) But these car manufacturers don't seem the be on the same wave lenght!. Please Ford, make it possible to change the battery at a reasonable price.

    Friendly suggestion -- I watch YT reviews trying to find out 2 things in particular: is there a knob for the audio volume? And is there a knob to change the interior temperature? Honestly, those are the 2 things I adjust regularly while driving. Other stuff I can pull over and stop to do. And yet, because of the influence of Tesla, fewer and fewer cars have real controls for those things (hence, my video watching). I would suggest a) a video on the topic of physical controls and b) incorporate this into every review (i.e., show us, right up front in the review, does this thing have controls?) I'll bet both of those would be super popular.

    When Tom complains about a $43,000 dollar interior looking cheap for the price of this car it's way worse when you buy a $45,000-80,000 pickup truck [yes GM I'm talking to you, and it's mostly plastic in the interior. making your luxury truck look like part were from an Ikea part store.] So you get a luxury truck for over a 60K truck and $10k in molded cheap plastic. There is a lot of electrical wiring, the charging battery, the computer controls for assistant driving and the transaxel. So the interior plastic isn't that bad for a $43,000 dollar car with top trim level. If you detail them with interior trim cleaners with gloss the molded plastic will pop and look much better. Vehicles aren't detailed at the dealerships for real shiny interiors for a better look. For 2023 there should be a new sports trim coming for this car. For press reviews manufacturers don't detail the interiors either for KZread channels. I know you drove a press car by the mileage on the odometer from TFLnow. Also I have been in a 2020 Toyota Corolla and it's interior isn't much better than an Escape and Toyota's cost more.

    On electric sounds, I find Toyota’s to be particularly grating. Everyone in my neighborhood seems to be snapping up RAV4 Hybrids, whether Prime or not, and they make quite a loud hum when you drive them at low speed. I think it might be louder in reverse than in drive, I’m not sure, but I live on the seventh floor of my apartment building and I can hear them clear as day if they’re parking on the street below. Don't look at it that way. I have a Ford C-Max with 220,000 miles on it. The thing you have to consider is the gasoline engines don't work anywhere near as hard in these vehicles as they do in a gas only vehicle. Oil changes are ten thousand miles intervals. I've had nothing major go wrong with my vehicle. In a hybrid vehicle everything is less stressed. In my opinion that makes everything last longer.

  • @DrivenCarReviews

    @DrivenCarReviews

    2 жыл бұрын

    Michael has a point. Typically, oil changes are every two years for us. When running mostly on electric, the engine runs very little. EVs obviously eliminate the fossil fuel part completely, but for people who take long trips on a regular basis the flexibility of a PHEV could be just what's needed. Depends on the buyer. Buy the car that works for you.

  • @toronado455

    @toronado455

    2 жыл бұрын

    Oil changes should be done every six months because the oil gets contaminated with water and other impurities over time regardless of miles/hours on the engine. Other than that though, there is much less wear and tear on the gas engine in a hybrid which in turn will lower your overall maintenance cost vs gas-only vehicle.

  • @briand9754

    @briand9754

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@toronado455 Oil changes are set at a minimum of two years on my Chevy volt and the oil life monitor handles that. Drive on gas a lot and you’ll change your oil as often as a regular ice mobile. GM’s engineers account for things like moisture and the need to occasionally start up the engine, by including something called engine maintenance mode. If you haven’t used the engine at all in six weeks in a Volt, it will start up and run for about 10 minutes til it reaches full temperature, at a low rpm. There is also a fuel maintenance mode that forces you to use up at least one tank of gasoline each year. Specially designed tank that is pressurized allows the gas to last longer than in conventional cars. These are of course just my statements regarding the Chevy volt. I don’t know if the Escape here has the exact same concept behind it. I’ve had my Volt for 7 years and done 3 oil changes so far. Air filter looked new when changed at 45,000.

Before car prices went entirely bonkers, I was considering getting a used 2019 or 2020 Fusion Titanium Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid, mostly because I wanted heated and vented seats along with decent gas mileage. I have to say, the interiors of those Fusions looked more upscale than this, although I actually like the wood trim. I'm not a fan of giant rims, but the wheels look surprisingly small for the top-of-the-line trim level.
