Ford 5.8L EGR Replacement on Van

After getting some codes on my Ford van with 5.8L or 351 Windsor I determined through some research that it had something to do with one of the components of the EGR. I replaced the EGR, EGR Control Valve and EGR Position sensor. This turned out to be a hassle on the Ford E350, so I recommend testing the EGR before replacing

I just removed my EGR valve on my 1999 Ford Econoline E-150. I had to size up the nut. I ended up buying a 1 1/6 crescent that fit perfectly. Then I used a 10 mm crescent on the smaller nuts and it pulled loose. However, I do want to note that I also bought some PB Blaster and sprayed it good before I started removing the nut. I let it sit 5 minutes to make sure that it generated through the rust BEFORE I turned it for the first time. Just a little effort. Watch that thumb knuckle! And don't forget to spray down your nuts and screws with PB Blaster and let them sit for a bit before replacing them back into thee hole. You might want to spray down the holes themselves too with PB Blaster.

you did right. the EGR gets stuck... it supposed to be closed at low speeds but when its open your going to have bad performance at low speeds. nice work.

I don’t even have your van, but I was glued to watching you fix your stuff. I’m having a similar issue with my 96 bronco; same motor, I did the fuel regulator, fuel filter, fuel pump & IAC module. And it’s definitely happier” but not running like it use to, I’m guessing a air leak somewhere.

Good job, Jason. When I had my intake manifold out of my truck, I replaced the EGR valve then. I figured why not. It's never going to be more accessible than that, and it was $65 so why not?

That ether or carb cleaner trick does work for locating vac leaks. Like if you sprayed near a bad intake manifold gasket at the carb or throttle body and you sprayed in that area, your motor will perk up noticeably. Don't give up on it just yet.

Nice vid! Have more like it for this motor / van?? Im planning and now considering putting off that (passenger) side exhaust manifold. This Egr, and the alternator must come out apparently. But... its summer now and this looks overly burdensome to rush through it may just stay loud for a few months. Either way i have some plugs and wires and distributor to put in tomorrow. Nice rig! Cheers from MN!

@@PrimalOutdoors and I uttered some more you've never heard of. been working on my egr for a couple weeks because i keep finding broken vac lines and pack rat eaten wires. my big nut was a bitch, but...i had heard about this heating it up & candle trick and wow, i thought it was old wive tale but it works, ended up doing the same thing with an o2 sensor. anyway Primal, great job & thanks for the vid, i'm about to put new one back in and i was thinking same thing about whether to start that nut before bolting up, so you confirmed & saved me time. can i ask you a question about the gasket and or gaskets? my new egr didn't come with one, i have a thin metal plate/gaskety thing that came of original & what looks like old gasket material that i scraped off manifold. so...was your application both that plate & a gasket? thanks heaps Primal, really appreciate it. -barbie

I think that you did a real good job. Look at all the money that was spent on Meghan's van at the shop and still it had problems. Basically they threw parts at it and fixed nothing. So all things considered a couple hundred spent on yours is a good deal.

I have the same year van motor and all. I'm having the same issue. I HAVE changed the EGR valve, sensor and pipe. STILL having the IDLE ISSUE and get EGR code. Haven't changed the egr control valve because when I had the van tuned up, I started getting the issue and in between the THROTTLE body upper and lower hoses, there's a vacuum nipple that was open,I CAPPED it thinking that was the issue, but still having the issue. My question. Do one of those hoses from the egr control valve the white or green one you mentioned, go to that nipple in the THROTTLE body or does the vacuum hose from the vacuum canister solenoid go there, and if so, were is the vacuum canister solenoid located on our van...?
