Thank you for showcasing and promoting Corvairs! That engine sounded amazingly healthy, not even clicking lifters after sitting so long. For anyone interested, Matt bought a 66 Monza with a 110 ho engine and a Powerglide. Part of driving any Corvair includes: spare parts, a 9/16" wrench (to change the fan belt), and a roll of paper towels (to act as your defroster). Glad Matt is not parting it out, as that would make a pretty decent daily driver- I hope Carter likes it! Absolutely great humor in this episode!

That later body style was, in my opinion, a great improvement. It drew a lot from the 1965 full body style. Interesting thing is that early Pontiac Tempests shared the transaxle from the Corvair. I had an RA at university in 1967 who had one of those Tempests and it was a rocket with it's "half a V8" engine.
As they say, any landing you can walk away from is a good one, but any landing where you can re-use the airplane again is a great one.
“Tom did this? Tom bent this?!” The highest magnitude of compliment Matt can bestow
Great job getting that back home guys! The reason it wasn’t leaking any fluid from the drivetrain is probably because it didn’t have any! 😅

Amazingly watchable and entertaining content Matt and team. I visited you in my big rig, parked outside on the street overnight and spent some good time talking with yourself, Jaymie, Carter and Colin while doing a reset. From our talk I have no doubts about why you do this. It's a passion and it shows not just in the content but in your family. I love the shirt. My Matt's Tow Rope kit is awesome. Carter, I smiled so hard when I heard you were getting your own Corvair I just about hurt my face! -- from the trucker who showed you all the pictures of his travels! Happy travels, many miles of wonders, and keep the greasy side down!

I witnessed an RC race plane crash. One person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Count yourselves lucky . Another crash the same day resulted in a Volvo having to be towed back to town from the RC Airfield. The Volvo fell victim to an RC plane radio failure, which resulted in the RC race plane in power dive straight down through the hood of the Volvo.
This '66 will definitely be a great daily driver! That's so awesome that all your boys have a Corvair now! I'm proud to be a part of the Corvair family. Corvairs have been in my family for four generations! My dad got his first Corvair in 1963, and has had one ever since! I'm in California for work, and I'm definitely homesick now and wanna play with my Corvairs! Matt I love that you are a true Corvair guy like me.....I love all Corvairs--early models, late models and forward controls (UltraVans too!)! If your FCs aren't in the Corvanatics Registry, you should add them! Thanks again for making videos with your Vairs! Some of the best memories of my life are cruising with my kids in one of our Corvairs!
Collin is growing on me. I'm enjoying seeing him more often in videos. He's not the most animated kid, but that's one of the reasons I like him. Hope he continues having a larger presence in future vids too.

Nothing beats a road trip adventure such as this one. Definitely worth doing if you have never done it. Looked like an epic journey
I really enjoyed watching you on this adventure with Colin. That shop floor space looks great; looking forward to seeing the work as it moves forward.
I wish my Dad was still alive..I miss him..miss doing things with him...cherish every moment guys. ✌️
Matt, your original fuel pump was likely working just fine. Your problem was that you had too much restriction in your feed to the pump from those two fuel filters which are designed to be on the pressure side. Even when clean, those filters cause too much of a restriction for atmospheric pressure to force enough fuel through them. They make specific filters for the inlet side (AKA a suction strainer) which have a fine screen and a lot of surface area inside so as to not limit the flow. I have seen this happen even on riding mowers.

@SDWNJ
6 ай бұрын
Hey with the rusted out floorboards, if the engine dies, you can just Flintstone your way home.
My first car was a 1963 Corvair 4 door. Bought it when I was 15 in 1968 for $50, and my dad towed it home with me in the Corvair. I took apart the engine and put in new rings, and maybe valves. The floor was rusted out, so my dad taught me to use the cutting torch, and I cut off the sides of an old washing machine to get metal for the floor. Welded it in with and Oxy Acetylene welder, which is what my dad had. I then coated it with Epoxy. Repainted the outside of the car olive green, with the back painted with a paintbrush. After a year and a half, I broke a piston ring going 90 miles an hour. Produced so much blow-bye that I had to plug the dipstick hole to prevent oil from blowing over the engine. All in all, drove the car for two years or so, and sold it for $50. Seeing you put the plates on the floor bought back memories.
Cool another Corvair back on the road again and in Matt's fleet plus more memories. The second design handled like a Corvette if you had the right tires and air pressure. You had to run lower pressure in the front tires than recommended or they would push in the corners at higher speeds. I had a Turquoise 68 Sport Coupe with white interior. It was a powerglide and had factory air. The color and the a/c had to make it rare. I put cragars with 60's on it (8" wide on back) and it handled well enough to scare a few friends that thought that it would spin out on the next turn at the speed we were going, they were feeling around for the seat belt. It is one of those cars that I wish I had back now in the same shape it was in then. Your trip was another crazy adventure and Tomtom did an amazing job of bending on the roll cage while you were gone. When the XJ is done that will make 2 more old vehicles back on the road that were just sitting, cool.
Watching your latest video I noticed that the headset configuration that the pilot was using was UFLYMIKE setups. Such a great setup. I am a pilot for Southwest Airlines and one of our pilots came up with that mic setup. Just wanted to drop you a note to tell the pilot thank you for supporting such a great mom and pop business.
Love these road trip stories! You guys show heaps of good 'ol USA resourcefulness! Reminds me of a trip I made in the early 80's driving a '63 Jag E-type from eastern Montana to Massachusetts during a cold and snowy Thanksgiving weekend. Dad thought I'd never make it; but let me go anyway. Other than a split heater hose in NY state, it was a pleasant trip. Youth conquers all - I would never attempt such a trip now!!

Nothing like a classic road trip.
Matt, it doesn't get any better than that. I took a trip with my dad many years ago across country and it was an absolutely incredible memory and experience that I'll never forget. My dad is a Corvair lover too, and my first car was a 1966 Corvair convertible.
That is a good shoulder time with Collin. Good memories made. Merry Christmas!
Nice floor space for the new shop! Also, what a crazy 1000 mile trip in the Corvair! Something I would have done as a teenager, but maybe now too with my mechanic brother in law! Looked like fun. Thanks for taking us along.
FYI, if you ever film in a small plane again a good way to pick up all the audio (ATC and Crew) without a lot of gear is to put a small lapel mic inside one of your headset ear cups. Gets all the conversation and less engine noise.
Matt is amazing, his family is amazing, I wish you all well. Thank you for showing me how it’s done in a real family. ❤
4:55 Great to see Ed in the video!! .. I wonder how many new to Matt's Channel don't know the story about Ed?? :) Here's a quick run down, very abbreviated. Ed is a friend of Matt and a star on Matt's Off Road Recovery. Ed is currently 85 years old, and his hobbies range from skydiving to prospecting for gold on his claim in California. Matt and Ed originally met when Matt bought his shop in 2009. Ed was living on the site at the time, and Matt asked him to stay! .. and they soon became good buddies.
So awesome seeing this rescue of this of car. And specially the father son bonding time. I’d do anything to go back and do a cross country road trip. Cherish these memories

What a great road trip. Father son time priceless.
Really enjoyable video - so cool to have the skills to be able to attempt these road trips. Massively valuable father-son time too!
This video brings back a lot of fond memories. I had a Corvair once, back in the early seventies. I bought it out out of a dealer's back lot for $15.00. Yes, fifteen dollars. It needed a head gasket. Other than that, the car was in great shape. With the new gaskets installed on one side I sold it for $200.00 and never looked back. My best friend back then loved Corvairs. He passed away a couple of years ago. These videos the with Corvairs remind me of him and all the good times we had. Thanks for bringing some old memories back!
I love watching Matt and his kids work and play together. I lost my father a year and a half ago and have fond memories of the sailing trips we did together. Here in England it is hard to drive for more than a day before running out of road, but I would have loved to drive around the coast with him. It's great to see Matt teaching his kids skills and techniques. We see Rudy doing his own channel. Colin and Rett doing rescues themselves when Matt was out of town. Thanks for letting us tag along.
