The Riksdag adopted a sterilization law that existed in Sweden for roughly 40 years, 1934-1976. With the support of that law, 63,000 people were sterilized, of which approximately half of the interventions are estimated to have taken place against the person's will. The interventions affected poor people and people in a vulnerable social position. The majority of those who were sterilized were women. People who were considered to have a mental disability were particularly vulnerable. The sterilization policy was carried out at the same time as the construction of Swedish welfare. At the same time, it was also discussed among leading politicians and in the media which people the welfare society needed and which groups were considered to have a negative impact on society and its development. What society considered to be the "good race" was to be kept as free as possible from mixing with the "bad race". Many sterilizations were nevertheless carried out by forcing, threatening or persuading people. It happened that threats were made that one would not be discharged from foster care, that one's children would otherwise be taken into care, or that maternity assistance would not be offered until one had agreed to sterilization. The new sterilization law led to a considerable increase in forced sterilizations. Most were carried out in the first ten years after the end of the Second World War, after which they decreased in number. Society wanted "capable offspring" is a thought that is still alive today.

I know I'll get a lot of haters for saying that, but it kind of make sense: at what moment does one stop being of their birth gender? There need to be a line. Their line is a bit extreme, but it does sound natural as I doubt the swedish house of parlement is particularly knowledgeable of trans* issues.

To those who are transgendered, or cisgendered and just made fun of for not fitting their gender role, you are not alone. You are not a freak. You are you. Don't let anyone tell you what to do with your body-they should respect you for YOU regardless. I thought I was the only person like me for most of my life...I was not. It sounds cheesy, but BE YOURSELF and screw what the haters thing. "Don't let the muggles get you down."

The Swedes have practiced Eugenics for decades. From the 30s til ummm now They learnt their incideous lessons of inhumanity from the world leaders in Fascistic practices. The first country to have an openly publicised, widely known about and publicly supported Eugenics programme. Yes indeed folks, the masters of the master race builders. Although they clearly have spectscularly failed to keep, stupidity out of theie gene pool, in fact the keep the stupidest people as leaders. They had the first, the biggest and the most wide ranging policy on forced sterilization, of anyone they believed, was too stupid, too physically or mentally disabled, suffered from any mental illness or insanity, had unsociable behaviour or even long term unemployment in their ancestry, or if they were poor, the wrong colour or newly arrived immigrants. The women would have their wombs removed the men would have severe, unreversible damage done to their reproductive system. The country I am talking about, practiced this from the early years of the 20th century 1907, right up until... well now! Just more secretly. The government that trained the Nazis and the Fascist Swedes how to impliment the most powerful, involuntary, mass sterilisation Law, was..... The United States of Arserica. The land of the Cult and home of the Spineless. USA trained Dr Mengele how to butcher undesirables, and Dr Goebels learnt how to manipulte the masses from his American mentor Edward Bernase. Yes folks USA is the world renowned University of Fascism. So Mr completely ignorant. The Swedes have been at this fir over a century, ans so have the U S of Nazierica. Get some facts before putting out another joke video.

@RanniBoBanni No, it's o.k. not to know! Sterilize means "to make steril", in other words, "to remove the ability to reproduce". A sterilized man can't get a woman pregnant and a sterilized woman can't get pregnant. -julian

I have ALWAYS been genderqueer. I didn't "decide" to be one day. I just came to realize I could and should be myself. Before then, I was living a lie every day. EVERYONE has the right to decide IF they want surgery and IF they want to have kids, and still be recognized for WHO THEY ARE. We have a right to OUR BODIES and we have a right to be recognized AS OURSELVES without being forced to alter our bodies because SOCIETY wants us to.

It's strange to hear about eugenics in the modern age, especially from such an accepting country as Sweden. I've actually just finished reading an article about eugenics, or "human breeding", if anyone is interested. Sadly, this law isn't the first time such a ridiculous notion has raised its ugly head. The sterilization policy in Sweden was a dark chapter in the country's history, reflecting eugenics and discriminatory practices that were common in many societies at the time. The idea of creating a "better" society through selective breeding was deeply ingrained in the policies of the time, leading to the marginalization and oppression of certain groups of people. Even though the sterilization law was eventually repealed in 1976, its legacy continues to haunt those who were affected by it. The trauma and injustice inflicted upon those who were forcibly sterilized cannot be undone, and it serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of allowing discriminatory and exclusionary beliefs to guide public policy. It is crucial to remember and acknowledge this dark chapter in Sweden's history in order to learn from past mistakes and ensure that such injustices are never repeated. It is a reminder of the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals, no matter their background or circumstances.

@carrotsareawesome @stuartpalm Adding to this. Not all trans* individuals choose to pursue medical treatment that would leave them infertile. Some only undergo hormone treatment (which may or may not make you infertile) & some don't have surgery at all. Every gov't has different definitions of transgender for what one must do to get their gender marker changed on documents, but that can sometimes be bent if someone has a good doctor (or lawyer). Google Thomas Beattie. -lauren

The reason you are forced to out yourself? We have to say our gender on formal documents. Our LEGAL gender. So we have two choices: live a lie, or come out as trans...sorry, if you're dressed as a man, go by male pronouns, and you are forced to say "female", it's obvious. The unemployment rate of trans people in the US is double that of the general population, often because of things like thus. And yes, many of us WANT TO HAVE KIDS and be recognized for WHO WE ARE and have be SINCE BIRTH.

@wiiza4ever If a trans man were to get pregnant and raise the child with every good intention as any other parent would, then I don't see a cause for alarm. It is a parent's ability to care for their children that makes them suitable as a parents and not their sex or gender. -julian

As a transgendered person who wants to have kids (oh the horror! A MOTHER who isn't FEMALE!) I signed and shared. To those advocating eugenics against people like me, we are not something anonymous and faceless. When you tell us we aren't fit to have kids, we hear it. Imagine in every formal situation-getting a job, for example....you had to come out as trans...that's what they force us to do until we get a surgery that a lot of us don't even want! I am trans. I refuse to be faceless or silent.
