For the Love of Lichen

In his home in rural Montana, photographer and biologist Tim Wheeler (timwheelerphotography.com ) has lined the walls of his living room with shelf after shelf of lichen specimens. He has gathered these samples from his journeys and he meticulous curates his collection, finding only the most photogenic or unique specimens to profile. Using stacked macro photography, his portraits of lichen transform these dull and ubiquitous organisms into marvels of evolution and vibrant landscapes. With the aid of professional lichenologists, Tim Wheeler hopes to highlight in exquisite detail the amazing diversity of colors and forms that lichens possess

I have always liked lichens...now that I'm retired I like them even more. My 5 year old grand daughter brought me a piece of bark with lichen growing on it. "This is for you granny." We had a lovely conversation about how lichens are small and yet amazing. The perfect gift.

Wonderful images.😊 Fascinated by the structures, textures and patterns, I am currently using lichens and mosses as inspiration for my textile art.

Im liking your Lichen ! Just moved to a very wet climate myself and have been amzed at the diversit of lichen here. Esp compared to the sonoram desert where I was previosly. Yes they do exist in Maricopa county as well. "Dont bust the crust" is an offroading term used to ask not to make new tfails and bust up the crust. It takes decades to form and is made if lichen and other small organiam that dey and harden foing dormant. Then bloom and grow agter rains is the super hot summers etc.

Amazing! Complex micro guys who are easy to pass by if you don’t know but when you realize it’s completely different and exiting world of shapes and colors opens. Beautiful!

Thank you. I’ve been picking up varieties of rock lichen to my garden and now I have an entire rock lichen garden that no one sees/comprehends 😂 I bring similar rocks in hopes that I can get them to propagate 🤞🏽 giving them water every few days. Anyway, thank you.
