A memorable concert performed by the all-star Paris Reunion Band in tribute to the great Kenny Clarke who, of all jazz in the early 1940s, was unquestionably the most influential and the most respected by fellow musicians.
The Paris Reunion Band, which came into being in August 1984, was a celebration of the Paris jazz scene of the 1960s and was also a respectful salute to Klook, who was originally to have been featured with the band.
His death in January 1985 represented an immense loss to jazz and was a severe blow to the other Paris Reunion Band musicians. But, with the total agreement of Kenny’s widow, Daisy, it was decided that the project would continue with Billy Brooks - a drummer of whom Klook very much approved. - handling all percussion duties.
Say Nathan Davis, leader of the Paris Reunion Band: “Without doubt, this was one of the most fantastic groups in the history of jazz. On one tour the band played in the Canary islands on the same bill as Art Blackey and the Jazz Messengers and I remember Art saying to Slide Hamton, “You guys are the hottest thing in jazz, Everywhere you go you tear it up. Everybody is talking about the Paris Reunion Band.”

There was a similar scene in Denmark in the same period - primaly in Copenhagen. Jazz musicians like Ben Webster, Kenny Drew, Ed Thigpen, Horace Parlan, Duke Jordan, Thad Jones, Richard Boone (All buried and rests in Denmark). Among others also Bud Powel, Stan Getz, Shahib Shahab, Dexter Gordon, Ernie Wilkins, Richard Boone Buth Lacy, lived and is living here - Dexter Gordon 14 years in Denmark. Thats where Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen realy learnt to play the double bass.
Remember the Blue Note- Griffin was there many times with Art Taylor and Kenny Drew and once I saw Larry Ritchie on drums. He had bad toochache that night according to Griffin.
Never forget Pierre Michelot was Kenny Clark's bassist in the Bud Powell's parisian trio.

did all French cherish jazz, or was it more of a Parisian / metro phenomenon? just wondering how much of a generalization that statement might be. there were certainly epicenters in America where jazz was essential music.
