For Grandpa Mason, on his 3rd gotchaversary

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Three years ago today, we trapped a dying feral cat named Mason. With just a few months left to live, I brought him home to give him the comfort and dignity every living creature deserves after a life well lived.
What happened next blew us away.
Mason found a new purpose in life: being a foster grandpa to rescue kittens. For 1069 magical days, Grandpa Mason shaped dozens of young minds, passed down important grandpa secrets, demonstrated tremendous hunting prowess, taught manners, quashed impudence and created a multitude of fashion-forward kitten hairstyles.
On September 19, 2019, we had to say goodbye to Mason. He crossed the Bridge peacefully and painlessly, with great dignity, at home on his tiny sofa, surrounded by the Auracuda, the TinyTuxies and his kittens.
For 1069 days, we got to love this glorious ancient "lost cause" feral cat. We got to give him 1069 days surrounded by love, free from pain and smothered in slobbery kitten kisses.
Each of those days was a gift to us, and to him. Given his feral upbringing and his medical condition when he arrived, it would have been easy to write him off as a lost cause. I’m so grateful we didn’t.
Grandpa Mason showed the world that even if you’re old, sick, feral, broken or different… you have value. You have something to offer. You are worthy of compassion. You matter.
Thank you so much for loving him as much as we do. His story doesn't end here, as we still have so much work to do in his name. If you would like to help cats like Grandpa Mason get a chance to experience the love, comfort and joy they deserve, please support TNR efforts in your own neighborhoods.
Help others understand that underneath their tough, fierce feral exteriors, these remarkably misunderstood cats are capable of extraordinary love and worthy of compassion.
Become advocates for spaying, neutering and most of all... compassion.
Help us honor Mason’s memory by turning the global compassion deficit responsible for cat overpopulation into a global compassion surplus by telling their stories, giving them a voice, and helping change the narrative about feral cats.

Shelley Roche, founder and manager of Tiny Kittens, wrote that she had whispered to Mason before he fell asleep, to "send them" any cats especially in need of help. Within two weeks a dying cat dropped to the sidewalk in front of the home of one of TK's most active volunteers. (He was saved.) There were quickly 2 more cat saves. Mason's on the job! (blinking tears) P.S. British Columbia, Canada, where TK lives and breathes and works and has its being, is a very expensive place to live. If anyone can send $5 or $10 (or a $million) please do.

I could picture Death giving him a long scratch in that sweet spot all cats have, and the two of them slowly dissolving from sight. Of course right before the last of their motes disapear, I hear Mason ask "So, Halloween IS coming up..." A small chuckle, almost unheard drifts from a few feet higher than the cat. "Plus, I haven't chewed anyone in so long! Besides who else is going to take mice as payment?..

"Mason met these rescue kittens, and his heart melted." For almost three years, so did mine, and the hearts of countless other people. Now, our hearts cry, a combination of tears, not only of sadness, but tears of joy. Sadness for the fact that Mason is gone, and we will no longer get to witness that gentle old soul taking each litter of kittens under his wing (ok, paw) and teaching them the proper way to act, just like any wise grandpa would do. Possibly, in his mind, he knew that it was something he had to do as the elder statescat at TK. It was also something he wanted to do as it was his way of giving back, and saying thank you to TK for not only rescuing him, but allowing him to live a life that he deserved, even though he was terminally ill. He got that chance, and he made the most of it, for way longer than anyone could have possibly imagined. Our tears of joy come from the fact that thanks to TK, we were able to meet, get to know, appreciate and love Mason. Sadly, while his job here is complete, he continues on in spirit to be the best "Grandpa" that any kitty could have. Rest in Peace, Mason. You will always be loved, and never forgotten. Your spirit lives on in every kitten you touched. I, for one, will miss you.

I recently learned something new: about "permanent fostering". With a permanent foster contract, you take on a cat with health issues, and you get to keep him/her for life, but the rescue retains ownership, and therefore takes on all responsibility for medical expenses. This is an ideal arrangement for senior people, especially those on a fixed income. It solves SO many potential problems, and allows a senior and a senior pet share love and companionship without worry. Look into it! (Lily came from Fancy Cats & Fancy Dogs, in Virginia.)

my current not-a-kitten: his mama was fine being an indoor-outdoor rescue, but he was scared of my VOICE for a good two months and his (gone too soon) sister wasn't much better. the PLAN was "wean, get to people with actual kitten experience, keep mom". hearing "unadoptable since contact-skittish no room ANYWHERE in the region" when they'd hit "tolerable housemate" manners was definitely a case of i could live with not-cuddly but chill with hangouts and such kittens way easier than the alternatives. (guess what? sis grew to be a princess floof-sized chill af bb with a Harley-loud purr, current not-a-kitten is cuddly af and sleeps with me a lot.) so tl;dr *I'D* believe your mama, because i wasn't in her shoes but it sounds like we were in the same vicinity.

Mason's story inspired me to care for feral cats, with an object of providing permanent help. Here in the Allegheny Mountains, there is a culture in which cats are routinely abandoned. When I bought a house here, on every block there were feral cats scrounging for food and shelter. So I set up a feeding station on my porch. When a cat brought her 6-week-old kittens to feed, it became clear that it was time to turn it up a notch. So I started trapping the cats, getting them fixed, vaccinated, treated for parasites. I kept them in a spare room temporarily so they could recover together. But one morning after trapping a large male, the father of the kittens was found dying from having been poisoned -- which is apparently popular here. Some abandon them while others kill these innocent creatures that were already let down by humans. From that point forward, I had to change to Trap-Neuter-Socialize so they can be adopted out. I currently have a pregnant calico and will do everything possible to keep her healthy until her kittens are born, then weaned. This will be her last litter and she will never be outside again!

I love cats enough to leave them alone. A lot of so called cat lovers are actually animal abusers. They hoard and deliberately inbreed cats to have deformities then sell and exploit them on social media. Ancient Egyptians were pagans. They even practiced animal sacrifices as part of their pagan rituals. Those beliefs faded and were replaced by monotheistic religions. Today, the majority of the Egyptian population is Muslim. Breeding, selling and exploiting cats is forbidden (Haram) in Islam.

@@MT-iq6ji they torture dogs instead and think cows have to be brutally killed and bleed to death to be halal and get offended enough so they get exemptions from animal cruelty laws in many non muslim countries. ancient egyptians hardly ever sacrificed cats. the often referred to "cat mummies" are often without an animal inside. so more an object of worship. back then, cats were seen as vital to civlilization, keeping rats/mice off from the grain storages not only to prevent loss, but also disease that way. so harming cats was, depending on the era, even treated as a crime.

He was a cool dude! My wife and I work with a rescue group and we feed and look after cat colonies in our town. We've actually won some over and they let us pet them and give them love. Thanks for sharing!!

I cry every time I watch this. So much hope and comfort and loss... I'm glad he was able to live his last years in peace and comfort, with as many kittens as his arms could hold.

To all of you at TinyKittens HQ, thank you very much for rescuing this senior cat. You are right in saying that every living creature deserves a life well lived. You gave Grandpa Mason a few more lives to live for and by what I've seen, they were the happiest lives that Grandpa Mason could ever live. He looked like such a happy boy. Though my heart sank and tears came rolling down my cheeks when I saw that this video was about the last year of his life, I had a vision in my mind of Mason and some other cats running through sun-touched meadows of green grass and lovely flowers just chasing butterflies. I am very glad that Mason lived his last years to the fullest having been surrounded by little kittens. This is probably what he was waiting for his whole life and he finally got his wish thanks to you all. Rest in peace, dear kitty, for you were the best little Grandpa any kitten could ever have!

I'm glad I was home watching this. Crying my eyes out. Such a special old boy. His last years with you Shelly were probably the happiest of his life and on his terms. It's just shows how special he was and you and TK are.

@@karl06111976 what an awesome human being you are to share your kind soul with us, in a way that few, if any, would have had the courage to do. Thank you for sharing your experience. You are like an angel in today's cruel world and I hope they perfect cloning in your life time. The world badly needs more people exactly like you. Thank you again.

I did not expect the end of this video when I am crying so hard. People would say he’s just a cat but the world lost a very very good soul. I know that Mason is caring for all the kittens lost in the world up in heaven! And if there is such a thing as reincarnation I pray that the next life formation is completely filled with happiness of the day he opens his eyes.
