High school can feel like an eternity. For some students at Split River High, it literally is. Maddie, a 16-year-old girl, is newly deceased and finds herself trapped in afterlife-limbo at her high school, where she discovers that she's stuck with those who have also died in the school over the past 100 years. For some reason she's the only one who can still communicate with the living, so she uses her new-found abilities to help investigate her own murder.

This is a spoiler alert, but Maddie and a girl who died in the fire started by the teacher switched spirits when they bumped into each other and the teacher purposely started the school room on fire on purpose to prove that spirits could be trapped at the school until they finish their unfinished business. It’s how Dawn was able to cross and luckily Maddie never gave the teacher the obituary or her physical body would have died and she trusted her friend Simon with it instead. This isn’t the greatest recap because they don’t show that footage of what happens in the last episode or the plot twist.
